Why Not Nominate the Next Reagan in 2012?
American Thinker ^ | February 27, 2010 | Bruce Walker

If Republicans could, surely they would nominate Ronald Reagan for president in 2012. As it appears increasingly likely that Republicans -- conservative Republicans -- will control Congress after the 2012 elections, the only missing element in the political equation is a strong, conservative president like Ronald Reagan. In the mix of possible candidates for 2012, there are some potentially promising people.

Your guy, Duncan Hunter, endorsed Mike Huckabee in 2008. That was after Duncan couldn’t break the margin of error in most polls. LOL

We will need a serious, brave, kind, and decent man. The world's greatest leaders -- Reagan and Churchill are perfect examples -- have been older men. We will need in 2012 another Reagan, another Churchill. Fred Thompson fits that role perfectly, and we should get behind him now.

THOMPSON/PALIN 2012

I’d like to see Palin, Pence or Demint. Pence and DeMint have done a great job in office this past year and Palin has been a great spokeswoman and motivator.

Fred Thompson is a good man, but he was just not able to pull it off against a weak field in 2008. If it were him against any of the RINOs, including Jindal, Cantor, Mitt, Palwlenty, Huck, etc. I would pull the lever for him in a heartbeat.

Two points: First, he is not running. Period.

Second, he is even less likely to run against
Sarah Palin, with whom he agrees on most issues.

That said, I could see Fred Thompson as an absolutely splendid Vice Presidential candidate on Palin’s ticket. He could serve one term. Then, when she runs for reelection, she could elect someone younger who could succeed her (serve her third term, as it were).

(Actually I wish Reagan had been able to do this with Ford in 1980. Mollify the establishment by picking Ford, then jettison him in 1984 in favor of a real conservative. Unfortunately,we got Bush instead)

Thanks for the ping. :)

None of the pundits seem to understand that congressional elections this year take precedent!

No. It should be Palin-Thompson for reasons stated in post 26.

That was a bad year for strong conservatives.

Now that the nation has had four years of a manchild screwing up the nation, they will be longing for a grownup father figure with common sense to assume the presidency and set the ship of state on a sensible course.

And having Sarah on the ticket is icing on the cake.

Fred was by far the best candidate last time around. But, whatever you think of him, there’s not a chance that he can run again. That was his last chance.

I’ll take Sarah.

Your post cracked me up: that Thompson is not a RINO compared to any of those on your list. He’s been to the left of most of those on some issues. Thompson has been a long-time McCain supporter including supporting campaign-finance reform. When he backed out of the race to whom did he throw his support? If you’re calling Jindal a RINO all I can say is WOW.

Mr. Thompson’s behavior during the last GOP primary was definitely odd. I attended a GOP conference where most of the GOP primary candidates were to speak. Most of the candidates spoke for about 20-25 minutes.....except Thompson. He came on stage with his wife; she waved and then left the stage. Fred proceeded to speak for, maybe, 5 minutes and then was gone! Many people there were supporting him but they then looked at each other ..like what’s this about?? Giuliani was terrific; hit the ball out of the park, but, guess his baggage was too heavy. Romney was very good too and, similar to Giuliani, spoke about 20 minutes. McCain was good too but, iirc, didn’t have a lot of supporters there. Thompson and Romney had evening coffee/ice cream events for supporters. Romney and his wife attended his event, spoke briefly and then remained to speak with people. Fred made an appearance at his event but quickly departed. I believe his wife remained for a while.
Very curious behavior for someone who was campaigning to win an election. imho, seemed like he really didn’t want the job...

“That’s why Fred supported Howard Baker over Reagan.”

And now McCain over Hayworth.

>>I thought Scott Brown was the big push?<<

It took all of, 2 or 3 weeks to remove any chance of his ever getting the GOP nod for anything other than the seat he has now (a RINO is still better than a Commie, but not by much).

I love Fred. He did have the media steal some of his thunder last time out ~ I think they indercut him for the obviously weaker candidates ~ but his campaign was still anemic.

I think Fred has a good life with his young children, radio show and beautiful wife, who is 20 years his junior. Lucky guy!

I would have Fred certified if he wanted to become president. I don't think he wants to "cowboy-up" for this go around.
