Chile Earthquake Among Strongest Since 1900

Based on U.S. Geological Survey figures, Saturday's 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Chile could rank as one of the most powerful in history.

If the magnitude of the Chilean earthquake stands, it would be tied as the fifth-strongest earthquake recorded since 1900, when records were first kept.  An earthquake off the coast of Ecuador in 1906 also was recorded to have a magnitude of 8.8.

The most powerful earthquake recorded also occurred in Chile, in 1960.  It had a magnitude of 9.5.  In southern Chile alone, that earthquake killed approximately 1,655 people, left about two million homeless, and caused $550 million in damage.

The strongest earthquake in recent years - and the third strongest since 1900 - was a magnitude 9.1 earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in 2004. That quake spawned the tsunami that killed almost 228,000 people in South Asia.

The 1960 Chile earthquake generated a tsunami that caused 61 deaths and $75 million of damage in Hawaii, 138 deaths and $50 million damage in Japan, and another 32 dead and missing in the Philippines.  It also caused $500,000 in damage on the west coast of the United States.

Paul Caruso of the National Earthquake information Center tells VOA that seismologists began recording earthquake magnitude in 1925, and applied those measurements to modern earthquakes dating back to 1900.

Throughout history, the most powerful earthquakes have not necessarily been the deadliest.  The deadliest earthquake of modern times was recorded in 1556 in central China.  More than 830,000 people were reported killed in that quake, which had an estimated magnitude of 8.

More ammo for the junk science “experts” to prove that global warming is “worse than expected”. LOL!

Dear Heavenly Father, please be with all who are involved with the earthquake and its repercussions. In Jesus’ Holy Name, Amen.

Tsunami hits Chile as Pacific Basin braces for impact

TALEK HARRIS
February 28, 2010 - 6:49AM

A tsunami crashed into Chile's coast Saturday in a potential portent of disaster across the vast Pacific Ocean as nations went on alert for towering waves generated by a killer earthquake.

The ominous sound of evacuation sirens blared in Hawaii and French Polynesia as a tsunami raced around the Pacific's "Ring of Fire" after the 8.8-magnitude quake in Chile, which left at least 122 people dead.

About 50 countries and territories along an arc stretching from New Zealand to Japan were braced for immensely powerful waves, not long after the fifth anniversary of the Indian Ocean disaster that killed more than 220,000 people.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, set up by Pacific governments after a tsunami unleashed by a 9.5-magnitude earthquake in Chile in 1960, warned of possible "widespread damage" from waves as high as three metres (nine feet).

"We could be looking at an all-day event," US National Weather Service meteorologist Eric Lau told AFP in Washington, as officials warned that the US and Canadian west coasts could also be hit.

"It will stop once it hits the land masses on the other side of the Pacific, in Asia. The wave is spread out across the entire body of water in the Pacific."

Authorities in the US state of Hawaii, where the warning centre is based, urged residents to take the threat seriously.

Bay Area tsunami advisory: Officials warn people to stay away from beaches

Local officials are closing beaches and warning California residents to off piers and jetties after the National Weather Service announced a tsunami advisory following the massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile.

Devastating waves aren't expected to hit the California coast, but officials don't want to take any chances.

Diana Henderson, a forecaster with the National Weather Service, said an advisory is issued when waves are expected to increase in height by less than a meter. She said waves predicted to be about two and a half feet higher than usual are expected to hit the Bay Area coastline around 1:30 p.m.

...

Beaches in San Mateo and Marin counties are also closed in anticipation of the potentially hazardous waves. San Mateo County officials are alerting people to stay out of the water and away from the coast.

...

There have been six tsunamis large enough to cause significant damage along the coast of California over the past 200 years, according to Gary Griggs, Santa Cruz Sentinel columnist and director of the Institute of Marine Sciences and Long Marine Laboratory at UC Santa Cruz.

In that period, 16 people died as a result of the tsunamis; one of the deaths was in Santa Cruz. On April 1, 1946, a man drowned while walking along Cowell Beach when water rose 15 feet above normal quickly from a large earthquake in the Aleutian Trench off Alaska, according to Griggs.

Crescent City on the North Coast was hit hard by a tsunami from the huge Alaskan earthquake of 1964. Water levels rose 8 feet, and much of the low-lying downtown area was inundated as waves washed 2,000 feet inland, drowning 11 people and destroying 150 businesses, according to Griggs.

In Santa Cruz, water levels at the harbor surged 11 feet. A 38-foot boat and a dredge sunk.

It's also possible for Oregon (and Washingon) to have a 9.0 to 10.0 magnitude earthquake, anytime in the near future. Anywhere from now to a few decades or so from now (of course, no one knows for sure when it will happen).... but it has happened with regularity before.

It wasn't until around the mid-90s that scientists began to realize that Oregon could have something that big...

9.0 Oregon Earthquake in 1700

January 27, 2009 | Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Resources The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Resources has an interesting .pdf document on their website that describes a 9.0 earthquake on the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Here is a quote…. “Scientific research in Oregon, Washington and Japan tells us that at 9:00 PM on January 26th, 1700 AD, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake, centered about 75 miles offshore, ruptured along a 600 mile long fault, running from Northern California to Southern British Columbia, causing untold damage and destruction to the Pacific Northwest coast and the Native American tribal communities that made the coast their home.”

RSOE EDIS

The maps are interactive. Plus there is info on other events and alerts.

Hope people heed the warnings and don't go out hoping to catch a big wave. They might catch their death.

You were saying ...

Yep, on the Oregon beaches, it doesn't even have to be some kind of tsunami, it can be just one of those rogue waves and they've tossed logs up onto people and/or into the parking lots and either injured or killed people.

It doesn't take much... even if this happens to be a slight tsunami...

In Oregon, people are always told to never turn their backs on the ocean and to keep an eye out... :-)

LOL..., I think the title to this article is ....

Chile Earthquake Among Strongest Since 1900

And even in the article itself, it mentions what you just said...

I'm not sure what research, as you say, they weren't doing... :-) ...

You were saying ...

You left out Biblical End Times, "...earthquakes in divvers places...," DOOOOOM!

If you had been keeping up with Biblical prophecies, concerning these "end of the last days"... you would have known that these kinds of major earthquakes are the ones that happen during the Tribulation time, at which time even the major cities of the world will be "taken down"... and we're not anywhere near that with these ...

We're not in the Tribulation time, that last 7 years before Jesus, the Messiah of Israel's return to earth.

When that comes about (i.e., being in the Tribulation time) then you'll see those happening.

In the meantime, there are articles by those who are familiar with Biblical prophecies who discount this kind of idea (that you're talking about) as happening prior to the Tribulation...

Of course..., we could start talking about all those other kinds of people (who don't have anything to do with the Bible at all...) who are claiming that the Mayan calendar predicts our demise by 2012... LOL...
