Big quake question: Is nature out of control?
MSNBC ^ | February 27, 2010 | Livescience.com via MSNBC

Chile is on a hotspot of sorts for earthquake activity. And so the 8.8-magnitude temblor that shook the region overnight was not a surprise, historically speaking. Nor was it outside the realm of normal, scientists say, even though it comes on the heels of other major earthquakes.

One scientist, however, says that relative to the time period from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, Earth has been more active over the past 15 years or so.

The Chilean earthquake, and the tsunami it spawned, originated on a hot spot known as a subduction zone, where one plate of Earth's crust dives under another. It's part of the active "Ring of Fire," a zone of major crustal plate clashes that surround the Pacific Ocean.

You are preaching to the choir, my friend.

My post was slightly on the tongue in cheek, side. :)

Aw, another successful test by the Navy of Halliburton’s new earthquake machine.

You may have seen the results of the Navy’s first test on Haiti.

“One scientist, however, says that relative to the time period from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, Earth has been more active over the past 15 years or so.”

That is a 20 year span of time - hardly enough to make any valid analysis.

But for the record: Nature is never out of control - human beings are always out of control - especially activist scientists.

It’s clearly global warming.

What we need to do is increase the regulatory and taxation powers of the us federal government as well as the general authority and income of the United nations, then we will be fine.

“Is nature out of control?” —that is a question sooo stupid only an intellectual or a broadcaster would ask it.

Or more precisely, a broadcaster gradually being eliminated to NOTHINGNESS.

Nature was NEVER under the control of man —NEVER. Remember when Time magazine had that cover, “Are girls and boys different FROM BIRTH..?”

It constantly amazes me, the things that amaze the US Legacy Media.

IDIOTS.

“Matthew 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.”

I suspect you can find such going on in every time period since the beginning of time. God's time is not our time and His ways are not our ways.

Global Cooling is causing the contraction of the Earths core. Our only hope is to bring back the GTO and Road Runner. We must increase our output of CO2 and burn more fossil fuel in order to avoid total Catastrophe. Muscle cars might be the only thing that can save the Planet from exploding. Beep Beep!

I take it you don't live anywhere near the “ring of fire”.

An 8.8 earthquake is nearly 100 times as powerful as the 7.0 quake that hit Haiti.

Most of the devastation in Haiti can be attributed to poor building practices (I've said as much on FR several times). However, there's a point when even the best built structures lose to the forces of nature — 8.8 is close to that point.

First thing I thought when I read the title.

Nature has been nature from the beginning, we have evidence of its power from Ice Ages to Krakatoa, back to warming. Tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, snow, rain, unbearable cold, unbearable hot, man didn’t cause it and man can’t fix it.

Too much oil being taken out of the earth thus leaving gigantic vaults of nothingness. Something has to fill them up and its probably the shifting sands resulting in the the shifting of major land masses.........

No brainer! Stop the drilling and pumping and we'll stop the quakes.........
