The Anti-Obama? [Is Mitch Daniels the Guy To Beat Obama?]
National Review ^ | February 27, 2010 | Mona Charen

MONA CHAREN FEBRUARY 26, 2010 12:00 A.M.

The Anti-Obama? Mitch Daniels might challenge Obama in 2012; the GOP would be lucky to have him.

On the morning of November 5, 2008, the world rocked to news that the United States had elected Barack Obama to the presidency. That same morning, Mitch Daniels, governor of Indiana, joined the list of those most often mentioned as potentially defeating President Obama in 2012.

In what may be a sign of unusual mental health and emotional balance, Daniels persistently declined to be considered a candidate. Among his many reasons, he told C-SPAN’s Brian Lamb, was reluctance to subject his family to the “savagery” of presidential politics. It is great news for the country, if not for him, that he has at last relented and agreed to keep the door open — if only a crack.

He earned his spot on the short list of possibilities the hard way: In a quicksand year for Republicans, he managed to win reelection as governor by 18 points (in a state Obama carried). His supporters included 24 percent of Democrats, 20 percent of African-Americans, 51 percent of the youth vote, 67 percent of the elderly, and 57 percent of independents.

The Republican Party and the GCM will nominate Mitt Romney. It’s his turn.

From Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_Daniels

Daniels was part of the Reagan Administration when he became chief political advisor and liaison to President Ronald Reagan in August 1985.

He is a Presbyterian. Daniels is a grandson of Syrian immigrants and was honored by the Arab-American Institute for his work in the community.

I kind of like Paul Ryan more. He gave Hussein an a*s whipping the other day.

I’ve seen this guy on C-Span. He’s a down to earth, smart, modest individual—everything Obama is not. Put up against him, Obama would look like the egomaniacal, preening phoney that he is. Daniels has gravitas. Republicans could win with him.

That’s an interesting article in Wiki. I like how he lowered property taxes, and wants the tax caps passed into law.

We’re in bad shape if the best that we can do is to nominate Mitch.

Mitch would be a great pick for Sec. of the Tres. in the Palin Adm.

Bean counters don’t make for great people for National elections One reason Mitt will never win.

Mitch would be a better team player in the cabinet

Paul Ryan was the first name Sarah Palin came up with a week ago for a person she respects. Another person for her cabinet. Also a leader in the making in congress

There are a number of bold, young turks & turkettes moving up the GOP ranks, all of whom have potential.

I honestly believe the majority of voters are desperate for a calm, mature, optimistic realist with solid experience. A combination of Ike & Reagan.

Sarah (in spite of her own substantial positives), will probably suffer blowback left by Pelosi & Hilary’s witches brew.

Don’t see anyone with all the qualifications just yet. In two -three more years someone will emerge - and we’ll all be pleasantly surprised. God willing.

Mitch Daniels has been a very good EXECUTIVE in Indiana. If he decides to run (and, I rather doubt it)... he would be a formidable candidate.

He’s LIKABLE and ACCOMPLISHED,

That’s a pretty powerful combination.

I have not really been paying much attention to the speculation over who will run in 2012, but he would be at the top of my list of consideration. A solid track record of successfully applying conservative principles, executive experience, a firm grasp of national issues, proven ability to attract voters beyond the conservative base; he seems like a candidate straight from central casting.

Romney falls in that just about portion - ie, one who cannot win. That is why the powers that be will push him.

I think just about anyone will be able to beat Obama.

Don't get too overconfident. I thought Bubba Clinton wouldn't be re-elected, but he was.

1. The Republicans have time to stumble badly or nominate another non-inspiring candidate.

2. If the economy shows signficant improvement in early 2012, Obama could pull out a win.

I’d LOVE to see a video of it.

Do a search on FR of the Live thread for the summit or video posts. There were a dozen videos of Ryan v Obama.

Also, try a search on youtube.
