Tea Party prominent: Palin not presidential (Tancredo says McCain "nasty, mean" and "unstable")
NRC.nl [with added redactions for McCain's foul language] ^ | 2010-02-28 | Tom-Jan Meeus

(snip)

His loathing for McCain has a long history. “I don’t like him,” Tancredo said. “He is not a very pleasant person. He is nasty, mean; the skin of an onion would look deep compared to his. He has a short fuse, he is almost peculiarly unstable.”

He still remembers his first encounter with the senator from Arizona. In 1999, Tancredo was elected to the House with 54 percent of the votes in his Colorado district. “When you win with less than 55 percent of the vote, you are seen as vulnerable. So then the party will go out to the superstars and say, can you please pick one or two vulnerables and do a fundraiser for them.” Somebody in McCain’s office picked him. “And I go, that’s great!” Tancredo recalled.

One day, he went over to the Senate and bumped into McCain in the elevator. “I had never met him. So I shake his hand to thank him for doing the fundraiser.” The senator then asked if he could count on Tancredo’s support for McCain-Feingold (a bipartisan campaign reform act McCain had drafted with Democratic senator Russell Feingold). Tancredo opposed this proposed regulation of political campaign financing, and he told McCain. “So I go: ‘I am voting no, I don’t like it. I actually think it’s terrible’.”

“It was like a bomb went off in his head. He exploded! He was screaming at me! It was, ‘When I come across the f**king street, you are…’ And, ‘You don’t know what the f**k you are talking about!’ And I said, ‘What?!’ I was just so taken aback. But then I went after him: ‘Hey, nobody told me you are coming to help me for a quid pro quo for a shit bill!’ It just got worse. It was really bad, I remember us getting out of the elevator and people stepped back way up because they couldn’t handle the screaming.”

The two never reconciled. “From there, it only went downhill," according to Tancredo.

After her speech at the Nashville convention, Palin said she is considering a run for the presidency in 2012. Tancredo however, does not believe she is fit for the presidency.

“I really don’t have this feeling about her as being presidential,” he Tancredo said. “I don’t know what it is exactly. I don’t know if the issues really are that difficult for her or not.”

He questions if she has what it takes, and whether she really wants it. “As governor of the state of Alaska, she doesn’t have all that kind of experience. She can get better. But I don’t know if she is really looking to do it.’’

It could all be a commercial thing, just a way to sell books?

“Sure. Make a lot of money and stay in the mix. I think that’s a great idea.’’

John McCain has brought over his former running mate to campaign for him in Arizona, where the Tea Party movement is challenging his seat in the Senate.

She will campaign against J.D. Hayworth, a friend of yours who is on your side in the immigration debate. What does that tell you about Palin?

“That tells me she is a Republican. I am not. I mean, I am a member of that party and that will always stay that way. But to me it’s only a mechanism, a way to get on the ballot and all that. But she is a real Republican.’’

She has to do this to rise in the party ranks?

“I think so.’’

So she is just as much an unprincipled politician as all the rest of them?

“To a large extent.’’

And you still love her?

“I didn’t say that!’’

Well, in your Tea Party speech you pointed out that she could finally say all those wonderful things now she’s free from McCain.

“I said: ‘Now she can tell it like it is.’ And she chooses not to.’’

So at the end of the day you are not that fond of her?

“You are right. I was much fonder of her before she chose to get involved in the McCain thing. She didn’t have to do it.’’

Silly Tom Tancredo.

(Interviewer)But there you were, staunch conservative Tom Tancredo in one of his last days in Congress, supporting a huge government program for the financial sector on the side of all the liberals you loathed your whole life.

(Tancredo)“Oh, it was very strange. It was bizarre! But let me tell you the interesting aspect from my point of view. There were several people that essentially said to me (and many, many, many more who didn’t say it), ‘I can’t vote for it, but my God, I hope it passes’.’’

(Interviewer)They wanted to be re-elected, and you were not?

(Tancredo)“Right.”

(Interviewer)So it comes down to the hypocrisy of politics?

(Tancredo)“Of course!” he laughed. “Everything does.”

(Interviewer)Do the Tea Party people realise that you supported the bailout?

(Tancredo)“I don’t know.’’

(Interviewer)And if they knew, wouldn’t they be angry with you?

(Tancredo)“Yeah, I am sure that would take the lustre off.’’

So Tancredo is no different then McCain. He did as much to sink us into Socialism as did McCain. You gotta love hypocrites, ,,,,,,NOT!

Palin should be a community organizer with styrofoam columns. Or she should join the military, be a war hero, and then keep dropping “f” bombs on patriotic conservatives. Or, she should become a fixture in the senate and “play the game”.

Of course, if she did any of that, I’d want nothing to do with her.

I don’t want Sarah to change a thing. I like the way she talks. I like the way she handles herself. I like her sense of flair. I like her Reaganism. I like her strong words on safe borders. Drill baby drill [not the way Obama does].

I like her love of military. I prefer a successful governor to run. I like her budget cutting. I like her lack genuine scandals. And while her sense of loyalty toward McInsane is irritating, I can live with that. FRegards ....

“Tancredo is setting himself up as a third party candidate”

Unlikely. But so what? Your declaration doesn’t change the fact that McCAin is a progressive and only attacks conservatives...ESPECIALLY conservatives who dare speak against his agenda.

What Tancredo describes is what TOO many have described.

THE McCAIN WAY - ATTACK REPUBLICANS

Defending His Amnesty Bill, “Presidential hopeful John McCain - who has been dogged for years by questions about his volcanic temper - erupted in an angry, profanity-laced tirade at a fellow Republican senator, sources told The Post yesterday. In a heated dispute over immigration-law overhaul, McCain screamed, ‘F— you!’ at Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who had been raising concerns about the legislation. ‘This is chickens—stuff,’ McCain snapped at Cornyn, according to several people in the room off the Senate floor Thursday. ‘You’ve always been against this bill, and you’re just trying to derail it.’” (Charles Hurt, “Raising McCain,” New York Post, 5/19/07)

In 2000, Sen. McCain Ran An Attack Ad Comparing Then-Gov. George W. Bush To Bill Clinton. SEN. MCCAIN: “I guess it was bound to happen. Governor Bush’s campaign is getting desperate, with a negative ad about me. The fact is, I’ll use the surplus money to fix Social Security, cut your taxes and pay down the debt. Governor Bush uses all of the surplus for tax cuts, with not one new penny for Social Security or the debt. His ad twists the truth like Clinton. We’re all pretty tired of that. As president, I’ll be conservative and always tell you the truth. No matter what.” (McCain 2000, Campaign Ad, 2/9/00; www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHoXkCprdL4)

Sen. McCain Repeatedly Called Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) nams. “Why can’t McCain win the votes of his own colleagues? To explain, a Republican senator tells this story: at a GOP meeting last fall, McCain erupted out of the blue at the respected Budget Committee chairman, Pete Domenici, saying, ‘Only an a–hole would put together a budget like this.’ Offended, Domenici stood up and gave a dignified, restrained speech about how in all his years in the Senate, through many heated debates, no one had ever called him that. Another senator might have taken the moment to check his temper. But McCain went on: ‘I wouldn’t call you an a–hole unless you really were an a–hole.’ The Republican senator witnessing the scene had considered supporting McCain for president, but changed his mind. ‘I decided,’ the senator told Newsweek, ‘I didn’t want this guy anywhere near a trigger.’” (Evan Thomas, et al., “Senator Hothead,” Newsweek, 2/21/00)

Sen. McCain Had A Heated Exchange With Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) And Called Him A “F*cking Jerk.” “Senators are not used to having their intelligence or integrity challenged by another senator. ‘Are you calling me stupid?’ Sen. Chuck Grassley once inquired during a debate with McCain over the fate of the Vietnam MIAs, according to a source who was present. ‘No,’ replied McCain, ‘I’m calling you a f—ing jerk!” (Evan Thomas, et al., “Senator Hothead,” Newsweek, 2/21/00)

In 1995, Sen. McCain Had A “Scuffle” With 92-Year-Old Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-SC) On The Senate Floor. “In January 1995, McCain was midway through an opening statement at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing when chairman Strom Thurmond asked, ‘Is the senator about through?’ McCain glared at Thurmond, thanked him for his ‘courtesy’ (translation: buzz off), and continued on. McCain later confronted Thurmond on the Senate floor. A scuffle ensued, and the two didn’t part friends.” (Harry Jaffe, “Senator Hothead,” The Washingtonian, 2/97)

Sen. McCain Attacked Christian Leaders And Republicans In A Blistering Speech During The 2000 Campaign. MCCAIN: “Unfortunately, Governor Bush is a Pat Robertson Republican who will lose to Al Gore. … The political tactics of division and slander are not our values… They are corrupting influences on religion and politics, and those who practice them in the name of religion or in the name of the Republican Party or in the name of America shame our faith, our party and our country. Neither party should be defined by pandering to the outer reaches of American politics and the agents of intolerance, whether they be Louis Farrakhan or Al Sharpton on the left, or Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell on the right.” (Sen. John McCain, Remarks, Virginia Beach, VA, 2/28/00)

Celebrating His First Senate Election In 1986, Sen. McCain Screamed At And Harassed A Young Volunteer. “It was election night 1986, John McCain had just been elected to the U.S. Senate for the first time. Even so, he was not in a good mood. McCain was yelling at the top of his lungs and poking the chest of a young volunteer who had set up a lectern that was too tall for the 5-foot-9 politician to be seen to advantage, according to a witness to the outburst. ‘Here this poor guy is thinking he has done a good job, and he gets a new butt ripped because McCain didn’t look good on television,’ Jon Hinz told a reporter Thursday. At the time, Hinz was executive director of the Arizona Republican Party. … ‘There were an awful lot of people in the room,’ Hinz recalled. ‘You’d have to stick cotton in your ears not to hear it. He (McCain) was screaming at him, and he was red in the face.’” (Kris Mayes and Charles Kelly, “Stories Surface On Senator’s Demeanor,” The Arizona Republic, 11/5/99)

Sen. McCain “Publicly Abused” Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL). “[McCain] noted his propensity for passion but insisted that he doesn’t ‘insult anybody or fly off the handle or anything like that.’ This is, quite simply, hogwash. McCain often insults people and flies off the handle…. There have been the many times McCain has called reporters ‘liars’ and ‘idiots’ when they have had the audacity to ask him unpleasant, but pertinent, questions. ”

He’s a kook when it comes to defense. He’s less ready than Palin, and Tancredo’s voice is only fit for the college circuit, not the campaign trail. I did like him discussing nuking Mecca, but we need a strong military with a firm hand at the helm, not rambling about “letters of marque” doing all the work.

As for Palin, I wrote some thoughts in post 38.

But I am very glad that Tancredo undermined McCainiac.

He is definitely a man on a mission to destroy McCain. Can’t say I blame him, but why take the party down with you in the process.

The guy is past his time and needs to just go away and enjoy the retirement Congress paid for.

O’ and by the way, maybe he should go on an apology tour and tell the American people he screwed up by supporting Socialism, by voting for the bailout that will only help Democrats and their friends like ACCORN with more money for their coffers.

I read your comments, dear AWM and agree with you.
Tancredo is not on my radar screen. I don’t care what he does and I dare say he’s not even a 1%er. His elevator story is interesting but I’ve heard it before.
I hope he doesn’t campaign for JD. He’ll do a lot more harm, than good.

Why is Tancredo supporting Ward in Idaho against Michael Chadwick for Congress?

So?? We all know that.

What do you have to say about McCain’s long list of abuses against other conservatives??? Tancredo isn’t running, McCain is.

Oh...not on your agenda??

I agree with your comments that Palin is not Presidential. The more she speaks, donating to Rand Paul, and traveling with Glenn Beck makes her less appealing as a Presidential candidate.

“Palin not “Presidential”, huh...

For every azz-hat that believes Palin isn’t qualified to be President, I would like to hear their opinion of the current placeholder in the White House...”

He said nothing about she not being qualified. He said that she is not “Presidential”.

I happen to think that while she is qualified, she is not “Presidential”.

There’s a difference.
