WASHINGTON (Reuters) Democratic leaders in the Congress voiced confidence on Sunday they will have the votes, possibly within a couple of months or so, to pass landmark legislation to overhaul the healthcare system.
Facing a wall of Republican opposition, Democrats have said they may resort to a rarely used procedural tactic, .. reconciliation, to win approval on purely partisan votes.
President Barack Obama, who hosted a White House summit last week that produced no sign of bipartisan compromise, is to announce this week how he would like Democrats to proceed on a top legislative priority.
"Our members, everyone of them, wants healthcare" reform, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, told ABC's "This Week" program.
"Everybody wants affordable healthcare for all Americans," Pelosi said. "They know that this will take courage."
Surveys show Americans oppose the sweeping legislation pushed by Democrats during the past year. But polls also find that most Americans favor reform and believe costs need to be reduced and coverage expanded.
Republican Senator Lamar Alexander warned Democrats to expect voter backlash in November's congressional elections if they try to use reconciliation, which would enable them to win passage in the 100-member Senate with 51 votes rather than the 60 required to clear Republican roadblocks.
"It would be a political kamikaze mission for the Democratic Party if they jam this through after the American people have been saying, 'Look, we're trying to tell you in every way we know how, in elections, in surveys, in town hall meetings, we don't want this bill,'" Alexander told "This Week."
"We'd really like to get a bipartisan bill," said Senator Robert Menendez, ..
"In the absence of that, the American people ... have said in the polls that they want to see (us) move forward on healthcare reform," ..

At this point in the game that is just another way of saying "this turkey is dead".
what are they smoking?
“President Barack Obama, who hosted a White House summit last week that produced no sign of bipartisan compromise, is to announce this week how he would like Democrats to proceed on a top legislative priority.”
Aren’t we in a sad state of affairs with this person at the helm? Sad, Sad, Sad...
Let them drag this out into the summer. People want jops, not healthcare. I’ve never seen a political party implode like this. It’s amazing.
I really doubt Pelosi’s talent for “muscling votes” is going to work this time around.
The endorphins from the berserker frenzy/kamikaze push to sign the House bill have worn off and those reps who do not come from super-safe districts are now sobered up and thinking of the consequences.
Those threaten and bribe tactics are not going to wash anymore. Self-preservation wins.
First, let's hurry, hurry.
Then, we need bipartisanship.
Then, we'll jam it down your throats.
Then, there's no hurry it will be fine in two months.
If they have a strategy, I don't know what it is. They come away from this appearing to be incompetent and confused.
Today, Democrat Senator Kent Conrad swore the Dems would not use reconciliation to pass Obama’s health care bill.
Every day that goes by, yet more wheels will come off this bandwagon.
The more Obama, Rahmbo and Pelosi keep pushing this excrement the more will democrat revolt brew and bubble.
There is no one at the helm.
Maybe I'm just "whistling past the graveyard", but that sounds to me like they're going to put off voting on it till they're so close to the November elections that by mutual and probably silent consensus the vote will be delayed till AFTER the election : And how the elections go may determine whether the crap is EVER voted on...at the very least, if the Ds are voted out and replaced by Rs, it will then be safe to conclude that the proposals are dead at least for the foreseeable future.
What's good for Republicans is good for political idiots too.
please please please let them speak of nothing but “healtcare” and cap n trade ...from now until November!!!!
HEY ‘RATS! America doesn’t want your communism! Stuff it!
I think you've answered your own question.
a lot of damage could be done in a lame duck session...
Lord! I hate that womans hands— I have no idea why but they drive me UP THE WALL! Like nails on a chalkboard!
They are like the undead. They just keep pushing.
The nice thing if you will is none of this crap will take effect until after Obama hopes to have been re-elected.. how many will fall for it and him now? Time will tell and quickly, like in November.
I dont get it. The key aspects of the legislation —the individual mandate and ban on excluding preexisting conditions—cant be passed by reconciliation. I understand that. Why dont these people?
“possibly within a couple of months or so...”
Me too, that’s a damned odd statement. Within a couple of months or so???
My God. Maybe they’re going with the “pester them until they give in so they won’t have to keep hearing us talk about it all of the time” strategery.
I guess they’ve settled-in for a 15 month long healthcare debate......
I think it will be a combination of something in weeks being set up to make the President look good and pressure for old career Democrats to fall on their sword for the goal of socialism and a more permanent dependent class to vote Democrat in exchange for their benefits.
As usual, Ramirez nails it COMPLETELY...the man is a cartooning GENIUS!
What, are they now his personal property? Bought and paid for?
I'd have Dutch courage too, if ‘d just consumed 2 bottles of malt whiskey. The trouble with such "confidence" is, it dissipates swiftly after the effects of the booze has worn off, as it will when the Democrats wake up from their booze induced fake high .
The "Man without a friend" and "The incredible melting speaker"
OOPS. The bolded part just told me THEY now know the thing is dead.
At least they leave no one wondering if they are delusional. They must be shunned and disrespected to their dieing day for the anti-American attitudes they bring to the table.
The most amazing thing is that BO is a DINO. He's ruining the Democrat Party and he isn't really a Democrat.
Until he needed the Dem Party to win elections, he was a member of the "New Party."...socialist!
So is FReeper tawiskaro.
A couple of months?
I thought their timeline was weeks (before Easter).
++++ Facing a wall of..... American citizen opposition..+++++
Facing a wall of what I don’t hear mentioned......To being POOLED IN WITH EVERY KIND OF DEGRADED DEVIANT LIFESTYLE/s.
Americans must sacrifice...while the same party-ing, perks, huge salaries and huge pension lifestyles goes on with all the beltway friends.
Highly doubtful. The word is that vulnerable dems will still lose their seat having voted for it initially so the must fall on their sword for the party. Other pundits say that anything passed is better than nothing so they have no alternative and pray the voters will like it in the end. Political suicide.

Right ... which couple of months?
Is that the same couple of months it was going to take to get fully out of Iraq? Wait we are still there.
You know, if I was a progressive lib I would be livid at the clueless incompetence of this crew. They WANT to pass it to show something to their base, but in fact this turkey is very unpopular for very good reasons, and #1 reason is: WE CANNOT AFFORD IT. A trillion more dollars we cannot afford.
That's how it struck me, too.
Here's hoping we're right.

TRI CARE FOR LIFE This from a google search:
This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollees cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.) http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/99xx/doc9925/12-18-HealthOptions.pdf

Congress plans to block Tricare fee increases
By Rick Maze - Staff writer, Oct 7, 2009
Tricare fee increases imposed last week by the Defense Department will be repealed by a provision of the compromise 2010 defense authorization bill unveiled Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators.
Snip The fee increases were announced on Sept. 30 and took effect on Oct. 1, but the defense bill, HR 2647, includes a provision barring any fee increases until the start of fiscal 2011.
Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services, said the announcement of fee increases was shocking considering that the Obama administration promised earlier this year to hold off on any new fee Tricare fee increases until fiscal 2011.
President Obama and DoD assured NAUS and the entire military family earlier this year that there would rightly be no increases in any Tricare fees in fiscal 2010, Matz said. We took them at their word, and I cant believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward, he added.
Liar! You would like Republicans to endorse your bill, period. Just another smarmy jerk using his talking points to deceive the public.
