PARIS – A violent late winter storm with fierce rain and hurricane-strength winds ripped across western Europe on Sunday, battering France and four other countries, leaving at least 51 people dead.

The storm, named Xynthia, was the worst in France since 1999 when 90 people died. Prime Minister Francois Fillon held an emergency cabinet meeting and afterward called the storm a "national catastrophe."

Many of the at least 45 victims in France drowned, while others died when hit by parts of buildings or trees and branches that were ripped off by the wind. At least a dozen people were missing Sunday and 59 others were injured.

Were those storms in France mostly cars on fire sent flying everywhere by peaceful Muslims?

Must be what blew through here Thursday night. Power was out for 2 days and lots (thousands) of people here in NH still don’t have it back. What a mess.

The French don’t have good luck with weather do they?

Remember a couple of summers ago when thousands of elderly French parents and senior citizens died in France during a summer heat spell when their kids had all gone on vacation to the beach and mountains and left the parents to suffer in unairconditioned apartments and houses? Was it something like 15,000 elderly who perished?

The Europeans are so cheap with electricity they’d let mom and dad die before getting AC.

If your take-away from this is that God hates the French, how much more must He hate Chileans, Haitians, New Orleaners and the people on Air France flight 447.

Very sad. As I recall, France had a large death toll with a bad heat wave a few years ago.

Energy is a lot more expensive over there.

Everything is a lot more expensive over there. Mostly because of taxes. And greed. And stupid labor laws and lazy workers taking 2 hours lunches, etc.

Is it true that the Greeks knock off work at 2:30 everyday? No wonder they’re going broke. And they don’t even have The Won ruining, I mean running the country.

Ain’t it lovely that when 50 people die in a storm, you can always find another group of people to think it’s just the right moment to make lame-ass jokes and spout political garbage about it?

Some folks are just like that,,,

The weather in you’re area goes from very hot to very COLD.

I remember very well the winter of 66-67 because I nearly

froze my young ass off in the Alps of southern Germany,,,

The “Foen”(sp)wind blew near 100mph,,,

Ya’ll be Warm...

Well i can´t speak for all of europe but air condition is really not very common here. Has nothing to do that people could not afford it (they can :-) Has more to do with the usuall weather. normaly it doesn´t get this hot (ok maybe for 3-4 days in the whole year. then you are usually keep promising yourself that next time you will buy your self some cooling :-) but you know when this days are over... people are just people. so usually you forget it untill the next heat wave. well for the storm. Ok bad things happen but 50 people dead (as bad as it is) is not something uncommon. The only special is that they died because of a storm. Normaly the just die because of, car accidents, crime... Bad but nothing really special.
