Democrats dig in for last stand
By: Carrie Budoff Brown February 28, 2010 06:27 PM EST
Democrats took heat over the Louisiana Purchase, and ultimately disavowed the Cornhusker Kickback.
Now, they are racing to keep Republicans from defining the only legislative tool left to salvage the health care reform bill as yet another tactic hatched in a Democratic back room.
During a year in which deal is a dirty word, Democratic congressional leaders are already waging a battle to defend reconciliation and beat back Republican charges that the fast-track rules are an abuse of power.
Democrats, including President Barack Obama, like to say Americans care more about the shape of a final bill than the way it was passed. But the Senate health care bill has suffered, in part, because of a voter backlash over the tactics Democrats employed to secure 60 votes in the Senate.
Republicans are craving a repeat.
Ill tell you one thing, if Speaker Pelosi rams this bill through the House using a reconciliation process, they will lose their majority in Congress in November, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said on NBCs Meet the Press.

They ain’t got the votes. Those that don’t have the facts pound the table.
“Democrats dig in for last stand”
Think “Custer.”
Reconciliation does not work. If it does they would have used it before when they were in much better political situation. The reason that they did not is that because it does not work, it is that simple.
As one would expect, Politico tries to downplay the crude manipulation and abuse of power that the use of reconciliation represents.
The partisan way in which they are about to use this tool is unprecedented. Thus, it needs to be referred to as Wreckonciliation. Because, that is what it will do to the ‘Rat party.
Custer dug in too....
Conservatives must expose and define these “enemies within” as the corrupt sleaze that they are. Pelosi, Reid, and their henchmen have declared “war” upon We The People. That is a fact that cannot be disputed.
Bring it on, Obama. Such a grim and self-righteous man I never saw.
Obama’s last stand!
Well, what are we going to do about it? yeah, we can vote them out in November but that still leaves Obama in power. I’m thinking that he might try to do a Clinton ‘96’’, i.e. shift to the center and try to play the ‘’moderate’’.
Am I missing something? I was under the impression that the house was already on a simple majority basis, and that reconciliation was only a Senate procedure.
The root of reconciliation is reconcile.
With no Republican votes, getting this bill passed with Dimocrat votes only, nothing is being reconciled.
Yep that Last Stand thing worked out so well for Gen Custer too. hehehehehe May you have the same results Nancy.
