A pact for suicide by train, coroner rules
Philadelphia Daily News ^ | 03/01/2010 | KITTY CAPARELLA & STEPHANIE FARR

In their last moments, Gina C. Gentile, 17, and Vanessa Michele Dorwart, 15, hugged each other on the tracks in a suicide pact as a 100-plus mph Acela train blew a warning whistle before ending their lives at 10:33 a.m. last Thursday.

A third member of the suicide pact screamed for the girls to get off the tracks, after deciding not to join them.

That was the conclusion Saturday of the Delaware County medical examiner, who ruled that the Interboro High School students' deaths were a suicide-by-train at the Norwood train station, about 10 miles southwest of Philadelphia

I use to take the MARC train from Martinsburg to Union Station in DC.

three times we had death bu suicide.

It was very tragic, not just for those killed, but, for the train crews, as well.

They took it very personally.

So very sad. Two teens and a woman in her 80’s. All the suicides were women?

Judging from the picture the little sister and brother didn’t seem very emotional about this. How long after her death did the picture get taken?

100 mph... at least it was quick for them.

My thoughts exactly. I can’t imagine an open casket viewing after hearing some of the details. Dismemberment was part of the damage. I wouldn’t want to see that under any circumstances!

Suicide by train is hardcore. Most train operators can expect to be at the controls for at least once suicide per career, yet typically more.
On a train in which I was a passenger in 2003, a woman jumped in front of the engine at 75+ mph and it made quite a loud sound. I similarly felt sorry for the train operator.

Per the article, “Friends of Dorwart and Gentile, both of Glenolden, said that the girls were upset about the death of a friend and classmate, William Bradley V, killed by a car while riding his bicycle to Gentile’s home last month.”

Where are people getting that these girls killed themselves over global warming? I read both articles at links from the site and I did not see anything about global warming. Am I missing something? Prayers for the friends and families of these two young girls, this is horrible beyond comprehension.

There is some unfortunate confusion between this story and another unrelated story. Don't worry about it; they'll sort out the facts on their own.

Trains on the Northeast Corridor between DC and Boston run up to 120 mph—it’s one of the few spots in the country, maybe the only one, where you have European-style overhead-electrified trains running at high density.

That poor trainee conductor is probably going to be having nightmares for a while. I know I would be. Ugh. Such a waste.

Those who commit suicide think little about how their death will effect others.

That’s why I figured driving off a cliff in my old truck in an “accident” would be the way to do it. Glad those days are over. Of course then you run the risk that you’ll never be found. Plus, I have a new truck now!

I don't know how politics are even involved. There was another girl in the suicide pact that backed out. I posted the story as a cautionary tale about copy cat behavior.

No, I was wondering if someone else had additional information due to some of the comments made on earlier posts (that seemed to imply that the girls killed themselves over GW). I am aware of the other suicides that were related to GW hysteria, I believe that was in Argentina?

What an idiotic way to deal with the death of a friend.

And there are some that insist that all suicide is the result of depression—it’s not. And why would you have a PACT among multiple people, it’s clear that some people cannot get past their temporary emotions to navigate through life.

This is NOT the case of a clinically depressed or manic-depressive person dealing with lifelong pain. It’s two stupid girls (one was smart enough to back off this idiotic ‘pact’) offing themselves.

And I lost my father at a young age, so it’s not as if I don’t have knowledge of this. Never even contemplated ending life as a way to cope.

Things like this can be really hard on the head end crew. Most railroads will provide peer support for them. A lot of engineers have a hard time dealing with it.

I remember viewing the video that the French jounalist made of 911.

The sounds of the people who fell/jumped to their death were very loud.

At first I did not understnad what was happening, and then I looked at the faces of the firefighters. One of them said something like do not go out in the open, they are falling.

And the guy that has to clean up the engine afterwords. A friend of mine works for METRA here in Chicago. Had a guy jump in front of a cab car on an inbound train. They thought they picked up everything at the scene, but when they brought the car into the station there were still bits of "meat" on the grab-irons. I don't now how much he gets paid, but on that day at least it wasn't enough.

It varies. Had about 8 episodes over 33 years. Very surreal, though. Sometimes the searing heat of wheels kinda ‘cauterizes em, no blood, sometimes its like dropping a watermelon off a roof. Sometimes they live through the night. Worst one was two kids, about 12 yrs old, playing chicken. I saw his face, the winner. Never forget it.

Those who commit suicide think little about how their death will effect others.

How would you know? Committed suicide often?

Suicide is the ultimate selfish act - you leave your loved ones to deal with the immediate logistical aftermath, as well as dealing with the why the rest of their lives.

as well as dealing with the why the rest of their lives.

This is why suicide notes should be descriptive and specific. If you are in massive pain and no medication or relaxation techniques are working -- and you've been dealing with massive chronic pain for the majority of your life -- and you can't work because of it and can't socialize with others, what else is there left to ask?
