Republican consultant Charley Manning is replacing the nationally syndicated Rush Limbaugh on WRKO radio starting Monday.
Jason Wolfe, program director for WRKO-AM (680), confirmed to the Herald that Manning will take over the stations weekday noon to 3 p.m. slot.
Manning, who has served as a campaign adviser to former Gov. Mitt Romney, emphasized that his new show, The Charley Manning Show, will be local.
The GOP strategist said his show will touch on all of the local issues that everybody is talking about, but with a special look at politics.
Im looking forward to really getting into politics, especially because this is going to be such a great year with the three-way race for governor, a big race for attorney general and state treasurer, Manning said.
Limbaugh has been heard on WRKOs airwaves for more than 15 years, but Clear Channel has been in talks to swipe him for its new local conservative talk station, WXKS-AM (1200), which debuts in April. Limbaugh is syndicated through Clear Channels subsidiary, Premiere Radio Networks.
Manning is no stranger to WRKO. Hes filled-in on the air and co-hosted The Spin Doctors from 1995 to 1997.
Hes a veteran of this market. Hes a superior political analyst, Wolfe said. In a year thats going to have such intensity around the election cycle, hes going to bring an unbelievable amount of credibility and insight.
I don’t want you to think that I’m a Rush basher, but I’m in my vehicle for many hours at a time and listen for hours at a time and he is getting a little bit stale.
The problem that all of the AM hosts and Fox have is that the GOP is giving them (us) nothing to rally around. Against-Obama is fine, but after months on end, the obvious response is, “what then”. Maybe as the election cycle heats up, conservative candidates will come forward that will turn this into a good debate.
That map is BS. I live in Rochester (you’ll see it on the north coast in NH). We don’t get AM1200 at all. Ever. (Well, not on my radios at least)
yes radio-locator maps are suggested reception...for me in Beverly it’s not bad by day and so so at night, maybe a 7 out of 10. In some markets Clear Channel will launch their talk station on a strong FM but they don’t want to sacrifice 94.5 or 107.9 which get good ratings w/ music
For you I’d think Rush is on am 930, WGIR’s sister station, right? 1540 in Exeter used to be talk too but got sold and does oldies now
Howie is w WRKO till fall of 2012. Be interesting to see ratings with no Rush lead in. Howie did win his time slot once last fall, even beating out the sports guys down the hall
Maybe I’ll be able to hear the show better. I’m too far away to get WRKO very well at all.
Clear Channel tried prog talk on some of their stations like WHJJ in Providence. Ratings plummeted. “The Air America experiment is over,” said the program director. Now they have Beck, Rush, Hannity etc
I get it on 96.7 FM and 930 AM in town. I wish more FM stations would go talk.
Plus, it’s an election year.
oh that’s right, forgot about 96.7
A little off topic, but Boston-New England media related for sure:
Don Kent, dead at 92.
Charlie who? Is he another convicted felon or does he have warrants making him eligible for a show on Felon Radio?
Major bummer! I remember listening to him and Jack Chase every morning on WBZ-TV before heading off to school. Two class gentlemen in a now-dying industry.
Two of my favorite memories from that show:
1) The daily farm report at 6:35 or so.
2) Chris Nahatas pitching pots and pans. Saladmaster? I remember him banging his pots against "inferior" pots, denting them beyond usage.
I don’t remember Jack Chase. Was there a person named Tony Pepper on WBZ? I vaguely remember him and Don Kent.
My Mom and Grandmother were big fans of his. He seemed like a class act.
p.s. The pan ad sounds funny - that might have been before my time.
I would say Jack Chase dates to the 60s. Back in the day of Rex Trailer, Larry Glick and “Juicy Brucie” Bradley.
I think I was the first one to vote, which gave the NO answer 100%. It feels good while it lasts.
tweet from “bostonradio”:
>>Rumba 1200 is reportedly vanishing at 3pm on Friday(3/5) and cutting over to best of Rush stunting until Noon on Monday(3/8).
I’m more excited about Mark Levin finally getting some airplay in Boston. Kewl. That should set a few people’s hair on fire...
