He's excellent, IMO.
I personally found it (the video clip with Craig Ferguson) to be revolting. He was very disrespectful of Governor Palin and that type of lewd, sneering ``humor'' has no place in my household. He's just another in the long line of Hollywood liberals mocking Conservatives.
I loved staying up as a youth watching those late night Westerns and war movies. Still love that stuff. Not much into the sci-fi, though.
Remember, that is for people that are up after midnight, they tend to be a little less rigid.
The guests were also better in Carson’s day. The stars of Hollywood were much smarter and wittier in Carson’s era than they are today. Could you imagine today’s stars pulling off something like the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts? They make it about themselves because their guests are boring.
Your household must be loads of fun.
Paar and Steve Allen, and throw in Godfrey who I remember doing a daytime show oriented toward housewives, were clean. Carson introduced more risque humor which audiences demonstrated that they loved. Leno and Letterman and especially Conan have moved further into so-called adult humor. I like raunchy humor but can’t stand it when it’s put in front of kids, which all these guys do.
Sadly, you may on target with that appraisal.
Even the Grand Ole Opry, which was generally a wholesome radio program, got a a bit risque when Marty Robbins came on during the post-midnight segment. He was a fine singer but some of his humor interleaved between the songs tended to be blue.
Actually it is. There's a lot of happiness here in this home. We enjoy good clean Southern Gospel music and uplifting films such as ``Facing the Giants'' and others. You can have a ton of fun (as ``The Kingsmen'' phrase it) without smutty ``humor''.
It’s been so long ago, but I have this recollection of Godfrey also having an evening show. someone with more knowledge may correct me on that. The guys I recall with their skits were Louis Nye, Tom Poston, Don Knotts and Gene Rayburn.
I’ll tell a raunchy joke, but among us men, and where it won’t offend anyone. What I won’t do is off-color humor that offends races or religions. That’s wrong in any setting.
Interesting perspective. Diluted talent pool...
There are a number of celebrity roast videos hanging around on YouTube. They’re great to download and play when you want a laugh. I even have similar stuff on my phone.
Excuse me, but the Tonight show was born with Steve Allen....the show ran as long as he wished each night, he did many more skits and funny bits and was overall the funniest of all of them.....He was followed by Jack Parr mand than Johnny Carson, with some assorted fill ins along the way.....
