Posted on 03/02/2010 2:38:44 PM PST by Nachum
Just days after his doctors expressed concerns about his rising cholesterol levels, President Obama dropped by a family-style restaurant for an authentic but perhaps not so healthy Southern style lunch in Savannah, Georgia.
In between events, Obama paid a visit to Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room and made it clear he did not want to hear it from the press about his choice of lunch.
I dont want any lectures about my cholesterol, Obama said. Dont tell Michelle.

How about a big ole mint julep?
None of us do.
Finally, the media finds something about Obama they can criticize.
No? How 'bout a drink and some cigarettes?
For once I agree with Obama. Quit telling him what to eat and how much to drink or smoke. I just wish he would stop telling the rest of us how to live.
“I dont want any lectures about my cholesterol, Obama said.”
Or my inchoholic altake.
In Boston no less, I had a wonderful southern fried chicken, fried grits, and collards dinner. I was skeptical and the chicken wasn’t the same as my mothers but still very good. And the mashed potatoes were also good. If you’re ever in Boston on Sunday night, go to the Plough and Stars, get there early (5) for the life music, and stay for the chicken and they also have Speckled Hen on draught. Yum.
MMMMMMMM.....That sounds so Good....I would rather have some greens, a cake of cornbread, and some blackeyed peas......Darn it now I’m starving...
What? No pulled pork shoulder BBQ? >8-0
Big MO is rolling out her health plan across the US and Barry is smokin, drinkin, and eatin’ fried food
Nobody should be lectured about their weight, especially by ugly busybodies.
Problem is, the government doesn't even bother to lecture anymore, they just make laws to force us to do what they think is for our own good. FUBO.
did he have is TelePrompTer with him?
No mention of how many beers?
did he sit in the “colored” section?
This guy has problem with alcohol and smoking. If a Republican president has similar issues, the LSM would have hammered him relentlessly.
Old Speckled Hen? Outstanding.
I was today absolutely craving a dish that is largely unknown outside of San Francisco and Marin called ‘Joe’s Special’.
I grew up with it- my father used to make it, and very well.
It’s *very* rich food. :-)
Hypocrisy, thy name is Obama.
What would you like with your side of lard, Mr 0bama?
As far as I am concerned, he can eat whatever causes him to expire sooner than later.
Smoke till his lungs rot, too, BUT NOT INSIDE THE WHITE HOUSE.
How many alcohol drinks did he have? That is the big ?
I was wondereing bout that. No white BBQ sauce for chicken, and; no red for pork? No fried Okra? No blackeyes? No slaw, No fried green tomatoes? No chess pie? This damn sure was not AL.
One of major socializing principles of Obamacare is the elimination of risk premiums for unhealthy behavior — poor nutrition, smoking, excessive drinking, obesity, etc.
Premiums and taxes will be extracted from everyone regardless of how careful or healthy a particular individual tries to be.
At the same time, the federal government will have an intense financial interest in controlling the behavior of all Americans in order to manage health care spending.
Furthermore, liberals are permanently entrenched in the federal bureaucracy and liberals refuse to make rational distinctions where favored groups are concerned, for example, promiscuous homosexuals or drug abusers. However, the burden will come down like a crushing weight on disfavored groups, such as white heterosexuals.
So there will be no “carrot” for taking care of your health, but lots of “sticks” for beating the crap out of you and taking your money to pay for others.
However, in every case where the Left has power, exceptions are made for the nomenklatura - the cadre of right-thinking political elite, such as Obama.
So people like Obama will be able to eat whatever they like, or smoke and drink, regardless of health effects, because there will be no health rationing or denial for the politically-connected.
Yeah I could see the Lamestream media’s response if Dick Cheney went and ate fried chicken and fattening foods while he was in office......
Damn that was funny!
Good thing he wasn’t in NYC. He’d be arrested for partaking.
Is this it?
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 pounds lean ground beef
2 medium onions, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, finely minced
1/2 pound mushrooms, sliced, (optional)
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, fresh ok
1/4 teaspoon dry oregano, fresh ok
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 (10-ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry; or 1/2 pound fresh spinach, rinsed, stems removed,
and leaves chopped (about 4 cups)
4 to 6 large eggs, lightly beaten
Continuing with the introduction, Don says,
“Some say this famous San Francisco specialty was devised by a San Francisco chef as a variation on the Italian frittata. Others insist it was created as an after-hours snack by dance-band musicians of the 1920’s (My Dad went with this one). A third theory attributes the dish to miners who frequented the city’s riotous Barbary Coast district in the 1850’s.
Whatever its origin may be, this hearty mixture of beef, onions, spinach and eggs makes a satisfying meal any time, day or night.
1.Heat oil in a wide frying pan over high heat. Crumble in beef and cook, stirring often, until browned. Drain excess fat.
2.Add onions, garlic and mushrooms; reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are softened, about 5 minutes.
3.Stir in salt, nutmeg, pepper, oregano and spinach; cook for about 5 more minutes. Add beaten eggs. Reduce heat to low and cook, stirring constantly, just until eggs are softly set. Serve with plenty of grated Parmesan cheese and perhaps hard crust Italian sour dough bread
Would the name of the restaurant be referring to Mrs. Ashley Wilkes?
Large un-chewed bites of rare steak would be a lot quicker. I’m sure there are lots of folks at the lunch who are good at the “hindlick” maneuver.
Just like there was a real Mary Mac (Mary McKinsey) who started Mary Mac's Tea Room -- the Atlanta equivalent to Mrs. Wilkes's. It was taken over in the 50s by Margaret Lupo, who ran it until her retirement in the 90s. It's still around, but it's run by a young fellow now - he's done his best to keep the food the same.
I would bet that Bambi have never eaten soul food until now.
That’s pretty close. I’d sauté the onions and garlic before putting the meat in, but that’s me. I just did a Yahoo Driving Directions session from my current town in Virginia to Marin Joe’s off of 101 while looking at a pdf of their menu. I should be able to make it there in 41 hours or so.
November 4, 1994. Julianne Malveaux famously stated of Supreme Court Justice Thomas: “I hope his wife feeds him lots of eggs and butter and he dies early like many black men do, of heart disease....He is an absolutely reprehensible person.”
That wasn’t a very gracious comment then. Of course Justice Thomas wasn’t downing fried chicken and rejecting doctor’s advice.
Long lines at lunch.
Enjoy, Bummer, before your myrmidons tax the hell out of it.
Couldn’t you duplicate it at home?
If you decide you can’t, I hope you have a safe trip!
My cooking doesn’t hold a candle to my late father’s. I could take my best shot at it, and something would still be missing.
I’ll do it this weekend- I need the right pan for it and a trip to Safeway or Wegman’s, first.
Yep, thats what I meant. Don’t tell us what to eat, smoke or drink and we won’t tell him what to eat smoke or drink.
Happy to hear you had a great time there. I spent most of a decade living within an easy walk of ‘The Plough.’ I would stop by for live music and a pint or two late at night. Too bad missed out on the dinners though they may not have had them back then. If you visit the area again try bbq at Redbones in Somerville.
The professor should stop lecturing us about what is wrong with this country.
That's the first thing he has said that made any sense.
Dont tell Michelle.
a. I like guys
b. I like to smoke fags
c. I like socialism
d. I like guys
e. I like weed
f. I like beer
g. I like chicken
oh and the number one thing not to tell Michelle...
Dont tell Michelle.
I like white girls
Yea, right, oh that will kill you in a year or two... NOT.
Just another stunt like saying "the campaign is over" or other nonsense. Bammie is trying to look like a "commoner" and not like one of "the educated class."
Bet you his approval numbers are sinking even lower...
My maternal grandmother was another matter. She was a white-gloves-and-pearls sort of person, from Augusta GA but she learned to cook from her German housekeeper while she and her husband were living in Pittsburgh (he worked for Westinghouse Electric his entire working life). So that side of the family is much more Pennsylvania Dutch in its cooking, even though it's all Augusta, Charleston & Upstate SC in blood.
All this southern food talk is making me mighty hungry. I’m starting my prep for a colonoscopy tomorrow morning. Yuck! YUCK! Y*U*C*K!!! Does anyone have any suggestions for making the prep process a bit more pleasant?
