(KFVS) - A preliminary earthquake report from the U.S. Geological Survey indicates a 3.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at 1:37 p.m. CT was centered near East Prairie, Missouri.
No major damage has been reported, although many people have said they felt the quake. Students and faculty evacuated East Prairie High & Jr. High Schools as a precaution, but no damage has been found at either school.
There are reports coming in to the USGS that the earthquake was felt as far away as Lexington, Kentucky and Indianapolis, Indiana.
The report indicates the quake was 5.1 miles below the surface of the earth.
"It was a relatively minor earthquake," said KFVS meteorologist John Dissauer. "The reason a lot of people probably felt this is because it was a relatively shallow earthquake. To compare it to the Chile earthquake that happened last weekend, that earthquake was almost 22 miles below the surface."
U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson released a statement shortly after the quake saying the earthquake underscores the need for individual preparedness and government readiness for a major event in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.
Location with respect to nearby cities:
3 km (2 miles) ENE (76 degrees) of East Prairie, MO
5 km (3 miles) SSW (205 degrees) of Anniston, MO
9 km (6 miles) NW (306 degrees) of Pinhook, MO
179 km (111 miles) W (279 degrees) of Clarksville, TN
219 km (136 miles) SSE (159 degrees) of St. Louis, MO
Lots of rocking and rolling going on lately, it seems.

Pray that one doesn’t let loose.
I live in the area ,but didn’t feel any shaking.
If/when the big one hits that area again, we could see the creation of Lake Bootheel.
Have they claimed yet that earthquakes are caused by global warming.
Did the earth shift on its axia again? Everything’s been all tilted.
There was a 3.5 one very near where I live. I slept thru it.
“axia” = “axis.” See? It’s that tilting thing causing these typos.
3.7 is itty bitty. Call me when it gets up to 6.5

A 3.7 would not make the ice in your Jack Daniels clink.
Yea, simply ignore it...all is well...
I didn’t either, but I am afraid we are going to get the big one they have been talking about for years.
We had a 5.00 a little furthur south a few years back. Lots of shaking with that one. We, in Tennessee, are not used to earthquakes. It scared the crap out of me.
I felt the one a couple of weeks ago, though. My bed was rockin' 'n rollin' for about 10-15 seconds.

We had a 3.9 in Quebec near the Ontario border last Sat. evening.
Yes, known him for many years. His friends call him John.
