Fuel Taxes Must Rise, Harvard Researchers Say ($7 dollars to Meets Obama's emission cuts!)

To meet the Obama administration’s targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, some researchers say, Americans may have to experience a sobering reality: gas at $7 a gallon.

To reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the transportation sector 14 percent from 2005 levels by 2020, the cost of driving must simply increase, according to a forthcoming report by researchers at Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs........

READ MORE HERE...

The 14 percent target was set in the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget for fiscal 2010.

In the modeling, it turned out that issuing tax credits could backfire, while taxes on fuel proved beneficial.

“Tax credits don’t address how much people use their cars,” said Ross Morrow, one of the report’s authors. “In reverse, they can make people drive more.”

Dr. Morrow, formerly a fellow at the Belfer Center, is a professor of mechanical engineering and economics at Iowa State University

Researchers said that vehicle miles traveled will increase by more than 30 percent between 2010 and 2030 unless policymakers increase fuel taxes....OH,BOY HERE WE GO!!!

That’s a JOKE. It will have to be AT LEAST ten dollars, before there is a substantial reduction in driving.

Or we’ll have to have tolling at around 30 cents per mile, which we’re about to get here in Texas, once Perry gets re-elected.

I knew that this was their plan for many years now. Trillions in new taxes masquerading as "saving the planet". Hopefully more will open their eyes as well to what the dems got planned. Take a look at this link to see how much your already paying to the state and fed per gallon you buy.

I wonder how long $7 gas would take to shut this country down.

Truckers would be out of business.

No goods get moved.

Stores close.

People get fired.

Can’t afford gas to look for work.

The End.

Sounds like you have figured out the details of their plans, alright!

I’m all for them trying to do that, and right now, too!

When gas was $4 a gallon I almost couldn’t afford to drive except to work and back home, grocery store on the way.

At $5 I probably wouldn’t have been able to afford to drive to work.

At $7 I probably wouldn’t be able to afford groceries.

Anyone who doesn’t take the fact that global warming is essentially a hoax into account shouldn’t be listened to, and any such fuel tax or crap and tax provision must be stopped.

We just need to force all liberals to always use the public modes of transportation they force on the rest of us.

That will get them to come around to reality for proposing such asinine things.

The one good thing again with this proposal is that we see an example of liberals using tax policy as a punitive measure to force people to do what they want. Far cry from their usual ‘taxes are needed to make government work’.

try to tax bikes via licensing fees and watch them scream about how it will cut down on the number of riders. They did that in Washington state, it was so funny to see them screaming about it. One flat out said it would destroy the biking community there because increasing taxes decreases the behavior.

When it’s behavior they want, and taxes increase, they bitch. When it’s behavior they don’t want, tehy praise it. They are such enormous hypocrites.

I believe that is why europe gas is so expensive, it is because most of it is tax.

Supposedly much of the gas tax revenue in Europe goes to subsidize mass transit. That will not work here because a) many of us prefer to live outside large cities and b) enjoy the freedom of movement that comes with an individual vehicle.

Liberals hate freedom and they want us all clustered together in concrete jungles so we don't brush up against any precious trees. They can go straight to hell, which is what they will make this country with $7 gas prices. They probably won't care, as they are miserable people to begin with.

ObamaCare gets shoved down our throats.
Insurance rates increase.
Cap and Trade and the EPA fraks us somemore.
Gas and energy rates increase.
Coupled with tax, tax, and more taxes.

With Jack Squat Barry and the Dems/progessives throwing dynamite on a already burning fire [large measure of the American people are already pissed beyond measure], Jack Squat and a large portion of Dems should be exiting quite hastily from center stage quite nicely in 2010 and 2012.

Damn straight its why. In France, a whopping 70% of the price of gas is taxes.
On average, europeans pay over 2xs higher gas prices than US drivers do. Their governments claim its to reduce the amount of energy consumption, buts its just a big part of how they bankroll their failing socialist utopias. On top of that, they’ve instituted a cap and trade program which since its inception has only raised the prices of energy, while Co2 output has actually not decreased, but increased. Awesome job there Europe.

And the usual suspects are pushing for it here as well.

Listen no further than the comments from that idiot limousine liberal, Diane Sawyer

Talking to Carol Browner, Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change, about Obama’s plans for increased fuel standards, she began, “Why not just go to a gas tax, for instance, which would accomplish a reduction in the use of gasoline, dependence on foreign oil right away?”

“If you really want to change the fuel patterns of this country, and if you want to reduce dependence on foreign oil, not by 2015 or 2016, but right now, there is one way to do it. It’s the way Europe has been doing it. And that is a gasoline tax.”

Sawyer would proceed to ask variations on this question six times.

That will not work here because a) many of us prefer to live outside large cities and b) enjoy the freedom of movement that comes with an individual vehicle.

Well, that's the idea with these taxes. One of the long-term goals is to force people to move into the cities.

Urban voters tend to vote exclusively Democrat, so if everyone lived in the city, the country would become a virtual one-party state.

I believe gasoline is almost three times higher. In Germany, energy is three times the cost here. Germany is the Democrat model. They want us to behave like Germans.

I hear lefties whine all the time about energy. They insist that we would have well developed alternative energy sources if we had thrown huge subsidies at alternative energy and substantially increased gas taxes in 1980s. Their assertion is strongly contradicted by the European experience. Europe has not found petroleum substitutes although their usage of diesel vehicles looks promising. However, the left has blocked diesel vehicles here. France has a major committment to nuclear power, another forbidden energy source of the left.

Europe is a good model for bad energy policy. The Democrats however want to take the worst of European energy policies and make the policies even worse here. I see an energy meltdown here. The Democrats are forcing energy boondoggles (ethanol, renewables, electric vehicles, residential solar, ...) and restricting economically viable energy production. The environmental left can and will stop new power plants.

At $7 a gallon, gas will be too expensive to use for driving, and will have to be saved for use in Molotov cocktails.

This is what the New Senate Energy Bill will do. It is designed to Cap CO2 and allow for a CO2 tax. The Trade part will come later.
Call your Congress. Tell them to Vote no on the new and improved CO2 emission bill.

Diesel works a lot better than gas for live cremations. It sticks tighter and burns hotter.
