Pelosi picks fellow Californian to take gavel after Rangel bows out (Rep. Pete Stark)

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has picked liberal firebrand Rep. Pete Stark to replace ousted Chairman Charles Rangel on the tax-writing committee, according to a House leadership aide.

The decision was made during a Wednesday morning leadership meeting following Rangel's announcement that he would temporarily step aside as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, the aide said.

Rangel announced earlier Wednesday morning that he is taking a leave of absence pending the results of an ethics investigations.

In Stark, Pelosi is picking a fellow Californian to head one of the House's most powerful committees. Stark becomes the sixth House Democratic chairman from the Golden State.

Stark is next in line for the post in seniority, but his maverick personality had led some to question whether he would get the gavel even on a temporary basis. Stark has made many controversial comments over the years, and when Republicans controlled the House, Stark challenged then Rep. Scott McInnis (R-Colo.) to a fight during a Ways and Means Committee hearing.

“firebrand” usually means “nutcase”, cf. Cindy Sheehan, Medea Benjamin, Al Sharpton, et al.

Republicans should fight to support Rangel. Stark is worse.

Better a corrupt pol we know we can influence than a loony Communist we know we can’t.

Pete Stark, atheist:

“[I am a] Unitarian who does not believe in a Supreme Being. I look forward to working with the Secular Coalition to stop the promotion of narrow religious beliefs in science, marriage contracts, the military and the provision of social service.”

[I am a] Unitarian who does not believe in a Supreme Being.

Strictly speaking, that makes no sense.

In other words, he’s one of those UINOs—Unitarians in Name Only.

“I believe in one . . . nothing.”

Stark is about as far to the Left as one can get without actually wearing a Mao jacket or praising Stalin's agricultural policy.

He is highly temperamental and injudicious with language, often resorting to epithets and personal slurs in place of argumentation. In 2007, he accused President Bush of sending soldiers "to Iraq to get their heads blown off for (his own) amusement.”

Stark is also a member of the Progressive Caucus and an atheist. In other words: he's a perfect modern Democrat.

[I am a] Unitarian who does not believe in a Supreme Being.
Strictly speaking, that makes no sense.

Expecting reason from the unreasonable is a futile pursuit. Stand back and await the obvious implosion. When nuts run things, its merely a matter of time until the squirrels of cosmic justice find them. So it is said, so shall it be done.

Apparently the democratic party isn't short on douche-bags. Here is a video of Pete Stark explaining how the national debt is a measure of how wealthy the United States is.

He's the perfect guy to be writing tax law, huh?
