Rep. Chaffetz proposes firing federal workers who are tax cheats

If you work for Uncle Sam, but you don’t pay him after he pays you, look out for Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R- Utah).

“Fire Federal Employees Who Are Not Paying Their Federal Income Taxes.” That’s the headline on a news release Chaffetz issued Wednesday, announcing legislation that would terminate federal workers who have a “seriously delinquent tax debt.” Currently, only IRS staffers can be dismissed if they don’t pay their taxes.

“Federal employees have an obvious obligation to pay their federal income taxes,” said Chaffetz. “Because they draw their compensation from the American taxpayers, federal employees owe it to the taxpayers themselves to pay their taxes. If not, they should be fired.”

He doesn’t say how they might pay that debt after losing their jobs. The legislation also would block the federal hiring of applicants who are seriously behind on their taxes.

Citing IRS data, the Chaffetz release said nearly 100,000 federal civilian employees owed $962 million in unpaid federal income taxes in 2008. With retirees and military personnel included, the numbers come to more than 276,000 people owing $3 billion.

Promising idea, but really needs to include the tax cheats in Congress.

Yeah, start with Congress. Then move to the Executive.

We could also chop off agencies that have no mission. Like the Department of education that educates no one.

You can’t do that. It would mean getting rid of half of Congress. Well....maybe that wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Just make sure you get all the interest. Especially from Rangle.

How about laying off federal workers who do and who don’t pay their taxes. That would save a lot of money.

Good idea, but Obama would have to look for a new staff.

I love this little piece of liberal clap-trap.

He doesn’t say how they might pay that debt after losing their jobs.

They aren't paying it now so what is difference?

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R- Utah) talks big but if he were asked to submit a bill (and shepherd it through to signing) to deny mailers who owe postage deficiencies (for bad checks, paying the wrong rate, declaring the wrong mail volume, etc.) from mailing any more mail ~ period ~ until they paid their earlier bills, I guarantee you he'd refuse.

It's easy to go after federal employees who might owe taxes. It's not so easy to go after a crooked mailer who has a couple of attorneys at his beck and call.

Nice idea, but it will never happen even if it becomes law. The big government employee unions would drag every case through the appeal and legal system for years, all the while the employee is sitting at home collecting full pay and benefits. Next, some lib federal judge would end up ordering the employee reinstated saying that the law violates some imagined right.

Most government “workers” do not work for the people,
they work for their union thug owners.
