Live Aid donations 'were diverted to arm Ethiopian rebels'

Fresh controversy over aid to Ethiopia erupted today after an investigation concluded that millions intended for victims of the 1984 famine was diverted to anti-government rebel leaders – including the current Ethiopian Prime Minister.

The allegations, made by former rebel compatriots of Meles Zenawi, are the first to detail how millions raised by Bob Geldof’s Live Aid were siphoned off to arm the rebels against the army of Mengistu Haile Mariam.

Although millions of people were saved by the Western aid that poured into Ethiopia after Live Aid, the evidence from the BBC investigation suggests that not all of it went to the most needy.

With much of Ethiopia in rebel hands, aid agencies had to bring in food and funds for those areas from Sudan, accompanied by rebel fighters.

wow- what a surprise.....the irony is the only way to save these people is to do what GWB did in Iraq- remove the tyrants....

of course the dopey liberals would rather hold huge concerts every 20 years and give it all away to make themselves feel good- not the people they claim to be helping...

Not sure why this would be controversial. The Mengistu regime was a horrific dictatorship comparable to that Stalin or Pol Pot, and the mass starvation was a result of its policies.

Money well spent, I’d say.

The money was used to arm the people against the communist government that was starving its people.

Am I supposed to be mad or glad?

Stop sending the famine victims food aid.

Instead of food, we should be sending them U-Hauls.

See the sand that they live in,it will be sand in 100 years and nothing is ever going to grow in it.

We have the deserts in the USA but we don’t live in them.!!!!!!!

....not all of it went to the most needy.

Aid given to people shooting at Mengistu was indeed aid given to the most needy.

Has Bill O’Reilly, or anybody else, reported on how much money was squandered / lost / stolen / wasted / diverted from the recent star fest for Haiti?

So someone on the Live Aid campaign realized that there was not a famine in Ethiopia, but instead a deliberate Stalinist pogrom style genocide campaign. But they could not admit it publicly.
I shocked a lot of libs by saying that the way to quickly end the Ethiopian “famine” was a sniper round at Mengistu.

I’m not sure that was a bad thing. IIRC, the government was busy starving the population.

Really?

Anyone think that the concert for Haiti actually generated any real help for the Haitians?

The only problem I see here is that this wasn’t shouted from the rooftops when this was done.

How is giving aid to a group dedicated to destroying the communists that are ruining their country bad?

Of course there hasn’t been a famine since the Derg were destroyed. BTW: Ethopia has one of the fastest growing economies in Africa.
