motivation

One of the sources said Bedell was seen on a surveillance video near the Pentagon talking to another man.

Synthesizing the best guesses so far, this guy was East Coast well-born, got into software, moved out to CA, got into growing pot, too, and hated W because he controls the drug trade and the WOT. After his bust, he wanted to sell the FBI some software but got nixed on his security clearance.
Probably schizophrenic too: notice lack of wife.
Who he wanted in the Pentagon is the question.
Makes sense. Makes him 36, and born in California, same thing I am getting. Not only that, a DARPA connection (this particular J. Patrick Bedell whose tail I am on had once tried for a USG (DARPA) contract; whether he got one or not is of question).
His arrest record said he was taking medication for depression. He also resisted arrest and the cops had to carry him out of his apartment. Looks like he is a born and bred california pothead wacko who might have made a pit stop in Austin on his way to the Pentagon.
Based on time of day and place, I'm guessing he was waiting for his intended target to emerge from the building after work and walk to the Metro station. After waiting a while, he blew a gasket, pulled and fired at the security guards.
