News Comments of the Day: A 'fat' tax on soda pop?
Cleveland.com ^ | 03-04-10 | Cleveland.com

Posted on 03/04/2010 6:06:36 PM PST by GOP_Lady

First lady Michelle Obama has made reducing childhood obesity a national priority, but it could take creative and controversial measures to really help American kids shed their pounds.

A 1-cent-per-ounce tax on nondiet soda pop and other sugary drinks is one proposal that public health experts are floating.

While many of our users agree that the tax would be helpful, some argue it doesn't go far enough.

Be sure to follow the link above.

Is this what makes African-American women so fat? Since they are the highest pecentage of the morbidly obese, why not concentrate on whatever it is that makes them that way.

Besides their burning addiction to entitlements.

Once it’s taxed more, people will quit buying it ... then the projected revenues will drop.

In our family, DH and I are the pop drinkers at work (farm and factory) But at home it’s nice to have water, milk or sweet tea.

I hope the pro smoking ban freepers are happy.

How many Freepers actually are pro smoking ban? I know there are lots of Freepers who believe that smoking isn't good for you, or makes you stink, but I doubt if you'll find many in favor of a ban.

Good for you.

I have always chosen tea (hot and cold) and lemonade, simply due to carbonation.

Terrible reporting, but I'm not surprised. We Americans let our media get away with too much. Notice that in the article there is not a question, much less the answer, of what will be done with that tax money. Are they taxing something as a way to get people to use less of it? Is that really a good way to use the taxing power?

If our media weren't so lefty-liberal and love taxes (more money for the gub'mint to spend on "worthy" causes), they just might question the wisdom of using taxes as a way to "spank" the taxpayer.

As a teenager I was so scrawny, I used to go to Golds Gym and drink Weider Weight gainer shakes trying desperately to pack on pounds.

What a great country my parents came to....our biggest “problem” is that kids have too much to eat. God bless America!

When these libs go to heaven, or better yet if you are a Hindu they are reincarnated....they will be reincarnated as a hungry Ethiopian or kid from Bangladesh who would club these nannies over the head with a stone and steal their Big Mac extra value meal.

I just don’t know what you are supposed to do with her for the other 22 hours of the day when she speaks.

If we didn’t have government providing health insurance for kids (S-CHIP and who knows what state programs), this wouldn’t be a problem.

But, as Eric has pointed out before, once the state starts providing for people’s health care, why shouldn’t the taxpayer insist on ideas to lower health care costs, such as taxing sugary beverages?

Ah - once again Washington State is ahead of the game. The Gov. is calling for an increase on cig. and booze(?) taxes, and starting a tax on soda and candy. The state senate already voted against the People's Referendum where we said no tax increases unless a 60% (maybe 75%?) majority of the senate voted for one.

(Boy - that sounds like D.C. with the healthcare vote too!)

Why not just tax the racial groups for being morbidly obese?

We could tax Hollywood for making us watch that crap. On second thought, I approve of this tax ...

We could subsidize sports such as golf or curling ... to get us off the couch.

To solve all our problems we could tax Samoans at a higher rate.

Just another dumb idea from a politician seeking air time.

Is tea really THAT healthy? Why tea? Maybe we should all be drinking water and nothing but water. And dry hardtack bread. Anything more is immoral.

>.I doubt if you’ll find many in favor of a ban.

A majority, I dare say. But pretty much moot at this point.

It’s human nature, if the govt does something we are in favor of, then it’s OK. Many conservatives refuse to see the logic of tobacco bans being applied to all facets of our lives, using the same arguments.

Situational Conservatism. He.
