GM to Restore About 600 Dealerships
Newser ^ | 03/05/2010 | John Johnson

Posted on 03/05/2010 11:54:59 AM PST by BuckeyeTexan

About 600 GM dealerships are getting a second life. Of the 1,160 dealers who appealed orders to shut down as part of bankruptcy proceedings, approximately half will be allowed to stay open. But one dealer tells the Detroit News that it's no cause for celebration until the conditions are made clear, possibly as soon as today.

"They could make it cost-prohibitive or they could set conditions like they need 30-year site control of our properties, which is what Chrysler is doing," she said. "It should be as simple as if the dealerships are viable and sustainable, they should be reinstated."

My husband and I find ourselves having to buy a new car. We will not visit any government motors dealership. I’m sorry for them, but I refuse to support government ownership of this industry.

These are not “new” dealerships. they are dealerships that were slated to be closed but now won’t be.

It’s a “saved” bunch of jobs.

Remember, there are millions of GM vehicles out there that need service or parts and repairs. There is money to be made, even if they are not selling many vehicles at these dealers. I suppose one could not stock any vehicles and only put orders in for customers who wanted to buy exactly what they want.

I heard alot of these dealers were happy with the money they were making, so good for them if they can get their jobs back.

Even though he was a big lefty, I loved Harry Chapin:

Dance Band on the Titanic
Artist(Band):Harry Chapin

Dance band on the Titanic
Sing “Nearer, my God, to Thee”
The iceberg’s on the starboard bow
Won’t you dance with me

Mama stood cryin’ at the dockside
Sayin’ “Please son, don’t take this trip”
I said “Mama, sweet Mama, don’t you worry none”
“Even God couldn’t sink this ship”

Well, the whistle blew and they turned the screws
It turned the water into foam
Destination sweet salvation
Goodbye home sweet home

I’m in the dance band on the Titanic
Sing “Nearer, my God, to Thee”
The iceberg’s on the starboard bow
Won’t you dance with me

There was a trombone and a saxophone
The bass and drums were cookin’ up the bandstand
And I was strummin’ in the middle with this dude on the fiddle
And we were three days out from land

And now the foghorn’s jammed and moanin’
Hear it groanin’ through the misty night
I heard the lookout shout down “There’s icebergs around”
“But still everything’s all right”

Oh, the dance band on the Titanic
Sing “Nearer, my God, to Thee”
The iceberg’s on the starboard bow
Won’t you dance with me

They were burnin’ all the flares for candles
In the banquet they were throwin’ in first class
And we were blowin’ waltzes in the barroom
When the universe went CRASH!

“There’s no way that this could happen”
I could hear the old captain curse
He ordered lifeboats away, that’s when I heard the chaplain say
“Women and children and chaplains first”

Well, they soon used up all of the lifeboats
But there were a lot of us left on board
I heard the drummer sayin’ “Boys, just keep playin’”
“Now we’re doin’ this gig for the Lord”

I heard the dance band on the Titanic
Sing “Nearer, my God, to Thee”
The iceberg’s on the starboard bow
Won’t you dance with me

There’s a wild-eyed boy in the radio shack
He’s the last remaining guest
He was tappin’ in a Morse code frenzy
Tappin’ “Please God, S.O.S.”

Jesus Christ can walk on the water
But a music man will drown
They say that Nero fiddled while Rome burned up
Well, I was strummin’ as the ship go down

I’m in the dance band on the Titanic
Sing “Nearer, my God, to Thee”
The iceberg’s on the starboard bow
Won’t you dance with me

Dance band on the Titanic
Sing “Nearer, my God, to Thee”
The iceberg’s on the starboard bow
Won’t you dance with me

Dance band on the Titanic
Sing “Nearer, my God, to Thee”
The iceberg’s on the starboard bow
Won’t you dance with me

I think the closures and parts/repairs were part of the plan to pay back Obama supporters.

Example: I have a Chrysler Town & Country and needed a electrical part. My Chrysler dealership parts department quoted me a price of $126. I got lazy and did not buy it, then they were closed down. The Dodge dealership that took over all Chrysler stuff has just quoted me a price of $325 for the same part.

Obama and the Dims are giving back to their supporters.

Harry could make you cry.

Too bad most of his songs were longer than 10 minutes (he liked to tell a story) so he didn’t get a lot of radio airplay.

One of his shorter songs was “Cat’s in the Cradle” and amazingly enough it was Top 10!

Get this; I resurrected an old Jeep Cherokee that sat for 5 years. I couldn't get it to hold an idle so I dropped it off at the dealer. Of course they fixed the problem, a bad throttle position sensor, but they also did their free inspection.

They came back and said I needed a new exhaust system. From exhaust manifold to the tailpipe. I knew the exhaust manifold was cracked, most do on the Cherokees sooner or later, and I thought the cat may be bad.

Well the price they quoted me on the exhaust was $2,000!!!!!!! The catalytic converter alone was priced at $1050.00! I told the guy I just priced out a cat online for $150 and that it would probably be quite a cold day in hell before I let them do the exhaust work :-)

In a perhaps-not-unrelated move, universal catalytic converters, and those that are model specific but not ‘certified’ by the state are now illegal in California; residents of that state must now pay the dealer prices for their catcons as they no longer have a choice.

And guess which cars need cats more often than others.

I just replaced the ABS speed sensor on my 1999 Ford Ranger, Pard was under $20 and took all of 15 minutes to do the job. Could have done it in 10 minutes if I had done it before. Don’t know how much a dealer would have charged.

I just bought a new car last week. Preface this with I hate shopping for a new car, especially because I am a woman.

My old salesman from Saturn has kept in touch with me, despite the brand going out of business. I finally relented knowing they would have used cars available.

To my surprise and happiness he was able to pull from the full dealership group (which is not GM products) to get me into a brand new 2010 Nissan. Over the course of negotiations, I don’t think there is any love loss between dealers and GM.

I also kept in mind that both GM had offered me $2000 off a new car and Ford offered me $4,000 off both prior to negotiations.

GM isn’t free and clear and may not survive the government takeover. It seems many of my Saturn service people and salespeople have moved on to better things.

That doesn't surprise me. Best thing Californians can do is ride those people out on a rail.

Here you go. Amazon.com - $50 for a Magnaflow universal (non-CARB)!

I would think that if they priced their work more competitively they'd bring in more business. They also wanted over $400 to replace my A/C-Heater blower motor. I found the part online for $35.00 then my son and I did it in under an hour.

How will CARB find out what type od cat you have? Are repair shops required to turn you in?

If I drive to Oregon or Nevada and get a new exhaust do I have to take it off when the nazi dealership reports me to the Gestapo?

Exactly. The Donofrio suit representing a slew of Chrysler dealers (and all Republicans I seem to recall)who were put out of business by GM when it was taken over, and who then sued. This suit attached a notice pointing to the fact that Obummer couldn’t take over ownership of GM unless and until he proved eligibility for his office(and iffy even then) is supposed to go back to court yet again this coming Monday, Mar 8, I believe. This may be a move to attempt to make this case moot, as was done when that National Guard Officer who was being activated for service in Iraq, questioned the legitimacy of Obummer’s presidency and they just cancelled his orders and released him from service (after getting on the phone and getting his boss to fire him if the boss wanted to keep his government contracts, which he did). What a corrupt administration!!!

They can catch it on a visual inspection - the ‘authorized’ units are stamped to indicate such.

And yes, they can force you to remove it and fit an ‘authorized’ one, purchased at a dealership.

Oh, I forgot to mention - as of last year, all service facilities in the state of CA are required to check and ‘adjust’ your tire pressure on your car if they so much as touch it. Guess who gets stuck with the bill for this ‘service’.

I worked at a couple of dealerships in college as a title clerk so I saw all of the sales contracts on both new and used cars. I also had some responsibility for the accounts receivable on warranty claims. Believe me, dealerships make their money on parts and service, not on sales of vehicles.

The Donofrio suit representing a slew of Chrysler dealers (and all Republicans I seem to recall) who were put out of business by GM when it was taken over, and who then sued.

Chrysler dealerships were not put out of business by General Motors. GM and Chrysler are two separate companies with two separate bankruptcies.

This suit attached a notice pointing to the fact that Obummer couldn't take over ownership of GM unless and until he proved eligibility for his office ...

No. The appeal by the Chrysler dealers claimed that the dealership closings were not required to close the sale to Fiat. The quo warranto petition that Donofrio and Pidgeon are considering, which is wholly separate from the bankruptcy appeal, will be based on the misuse of TARP funds by an illegitimate adminstration.

This isn’t related to Donofrio’s appeal for the Chrysler dealers. GM and Chrysler are two separate companies. Chrysler hasn’t announced that it is restoring dealership franchises to revoked dealership agreements.

It’s really too bad, I really like the 2nd gen CTS, and the wagon looked really promising.

Last week I was in a local Buick dealership that was among the dealers on the original purge list. They are a very old, multi-generational dealership. I was buying a used Honda Civic for my son.

I asked the salesman if they were still a Buick dealer. He said that GM had changed their mind a few weeks after the original announcement and allowed them to keep their franchise, but that GM was imposing onerous terms on the dealers and they would soon have to make a decision about staying in business. The dealer's profit is apparently being cut to the bone.

I was there on a Friday afternoon, and I was the only customer on the lot.

I know someone who had 2 of her GM dealerships closed along with her Chrysler. She has spent about a hundred grand to get them back. All three were top 25 in the country. The one demand to her was to supply a business plan to make sure she could be solvent. Talked about PO’d. Talk to her! Yes, if she gets all three back she will re-hire and save 179 jobs.
