BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- An Indiana University student has distributed stickers pronouncing "I am coal" around the world in what she calls "smart vandalism" to raise awareness of climate-change issues.
Junior Cristina Vanko enlisted family and friends worldwide to affix 1,000 stickers to electrical fixtures, illuminated displays and other structures as part of a class in art, engagement and activism.
The stickers have appeared in U.S. cities including Bloomington, Chicago, San Francisco and New York and internationally in Europe, South America, New Zealand and even Iraq.
"It's like a little piece of me -- everywhere," Vanko told The Herald-Times of Bloomington.
Vanko's class is part of The Canary Project, a New York-based program that uses visual media, events and artwork to build public understanding of climate change issues. Its founders, Edward Morris and Susannah Sayler, are guest instructors at Indiana University and taught the class.

""It's smart vandalism," she said. "A lot of people are getting in with the cause.""
No, to me it makes people see all the important things in life they would lose without energy from coal. If I hadn't read this article and seen this sticker I would take it as an advertisement for Big Coal.
"It's like a little piece of me -- everywhere," Vanko told The Herald-Times of Bloomington.Uh-huh.
So be careful Cristina, that amount isn't infinite. You'll need to use some of it when you grow up.
Maybe some of those Obama/Joker/Socialism stickers would go nicely with these.
An Indiana University student
Probably the same type who are protesting the enrollment fees increase who hasnt worked a day in her life living off mommy and daddy and any free handout she can claim. Stick it on anything of mine and she will pull back a stump.
They’ll sit in the dark burning candles and singing protest songs all night long, but are the first to b*tch if they lose the really important things to the cause like a DSL connection.
The box in the photo appears to be a low voltage cable TV or telephone box.
Could be fiber optics with near zero electricity.
Forrest Gump knew all about this type.
What a coincidence! I am coal, too!
I’m thinking the proper punishment would be forehead tattoos—”I’m an a__hole”.
“I am coal”...whatever happened to “We are stardust, we are golden, we are 1,000 year old carbon” (Joni Mitchell). Why do leftist hate Carbon? Is it because they hate themselves?
I agree completely. The apparent statement is “If we ban coal mining and coal electrical production, you won’t have this anymore.”
I know. That was my first thought too. The coal industry should hire her as a public relations adviser.
