Stupak: Health bill abortion fight can be resolved
Associated Press
Updated: Mar 8, 2010 4:09 PM

TAWAS CITY, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Democrat Bart Stupak says prospects are good for resolving a dispute over abortion that's led some House Democrats to threaten to withhold support of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Stupak said Monday he expects to resume talks with House leaders this week about wording that wouldn't impose new limits on abortion rights but also wouldn't allow federal funding of the procedure.

Stupak's emerged as spokesman for about a dozen House Democrats who say the Senate's version of health legislation would authorize federal abortion subsidies. They insist on restoring stiffer restrictions from the House measure.

Stupak tells The Associated Press he's more optimistic than last week. He'd said then that nothing had changed and he didn't think House leaders had the votes to pass the bill.

See? I told you he was a socialist.

I still can't believe that there were some people on this very website who thought that Stupak was some kind of "hero."

Please don’t resolve it. They’ll get it in one way or another no matter what promises they make to you, Stupak. Keep opposing the whole stinking piece of garbage!!

In this photo, the elusive "Blue Dog" was thought to have been spotted...

Turns out, it was just Bigfoot.

"Health bill abortion fight can be resolved"

Sure it can, just don't spend any of our tax dollars to fund abortions. Problem solved.

Feigned concern for the aborted ones.

Abortion is a major component of any Socialized health care system - Stupak knows this.

This is about political cover for politicians, not protecting babies or the taxpayer.

I think the plan is for the House to amend the Senate bill, pass it, and send it back to the Senate. The Senate will use reconciliation to consider the House amendments, and then send the corrected bill back to the House for final approval.

Well that makes this that I just posted rather hollow:

Dem congressman: We may have as little as 201 votes for ObamaCare

I thought that if the bill requires Senate reconciliation, the Republicans will stall it indefinitely.

I’m under the impression the Leftists wish to use trickery to avoid the Senate step, sending the bill from the House to the White House.

I agree. May God have mercy on us all. Judgment day will come and it's not going to be pretty.

That can’t be done. In order for the reconciliation process to START, the House has to PASS the Senate bill EXACTLY. They can’t amend a bill the Senate sends them and return it to the Senate. If they do that, it is considered a new bill and the 60 vote rule applies. ONLY if they pass the SAME bill can the Senate then act to ‘reconcile’ it.

I think that’s what the leadership wants but I don’t think Stupak could go along without being inconsistent with his prior statements.

Very good question regarding what happened to Massa. Stupak has good reason to fear the Chicago way!

So the Senate is going to take out the language for funding of abortions...some Senators won’t like that....

Not a chance. Thirty minutes after it's passed in the House it will be on Zero's desk and thirty minutes after that he'll be calling a press conference to announce "a great day in America" and then they'll drop it like a rock and you won't hear about Obamacare for a year. Believe it.

I would be very afraid of this process. Once the House passes the Senate bill and Obummer signs it the game is over and the American people will have lost.
