ID Card for Workers Is at Center of Immigration Plan
WallStreetJournal.com ^ | 3-9-2010 | Laura Meckler

Posted on 03/09/2010 2:53:08 AM PST by raybbr

Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill have settled on a way to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants: a national biometric identification card all American workers would eventually be required to obtain.

Under the potentially controversial plan still taking shape in the Senate, all legal U.S. workers, including citizens and immigrants, would be issued an ID card with embedded information, such as fingerprints, to tie the card to the worker.

The ID card plan is one of several steps advocates of an immigration overhaul are taking to address concerns that have defeated similar bills in the past.

The uphill effort to pass a bill is being led by Sens. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), who plan to meet with President Barack Obama as soon as this week to update him on their work. An administration official said the White House had no position on the biometric card.

"It's the nub of solving the immigration dilemma politically speaking," Mr. Schumer said in an interview. The card, he said, would directly answer concerns that after legislation is signed, another wave of illegal immigrants would arrive. "If you say they can't get a job when they come here, you'll stop it."

Personally, I like a national ID card that will allow people to work and to vote. No card? No work, no vote.

I understand that it has echoes of a Police State and Revelation, but I think this still would be a good thing.

It doesn’t stop illegal immigrants from working, as they can still be paid under the table in cash. Meanwhile, CITIZENS of the U.S. have yet another burden placed on them by the Federal Government.

One of the rare times I agree with the ACLU. Instead of cutting off welfare and free medical for illegals, and defending our borders we are going to hassle the honest citizens, AGAIN. Honest citizens do this, do that, pay, pay, pay(this ID card won’t be free)Illegals; don’t you worry your pretty little heads about anything. Just sit over there with your hand out and we will give you money.
The bottom lone, this will degenerate into a “let’s see your ID”(scan the info into handy portable devices) for every aspect of our lives.
No thanks.

I guess this would take place, just after granting amnesty to

It will double as a voter registration card, no doubt.

That word?

Un-American.

We already have standards for mandatory identification for employment, but those are ignored by those who want to hire slave labor illegal workers. How will a nationally mandated biometric ID help curb illegals from getting a job? It won't. It's just going to give Uncle Sugar more power over us. You might be OK with that, but I'm sure the hell not. Enforce the laws already on the books!

Horse pucky. The whole immigration issue is about the left doing the same thing to the USA that their euro-socialist kin did to Europe by introducing millions of foreign dependents on the welfare system, creating enough stress to collapse the system while creating social chaos because non of them will acclimate to European society.

That's all this is about, period.

It is still an amnesty for illegal aliens. The German 1960’s experiment with “guest workers” was an unmitigated failure. See this report from the Center for Immigration Studies: http://cis.org/TemporaryWorkers-Overstays

Additionally, read Kris Kobach’s op-ed in the NYPost May 2007:http://www.nypost.com/f/print/news/opinion/opedcolumnists/rx_for_breakdown_8saK9AesgW4OAnOKYMK7KM

Besides, we already have visa programs in place for those who want to work here.

It’ll be a cold day in hell before these “ID cards” are required to vote, unless they’re handing them out at every cemetary within most city limits.

The idea is that if they force all Americans to carry “biometric” ID cards, then they can legalize all the illegal aliens and nobody will worry anymore about more illegal aliens coming in since they won’t have the “biometric” ID cards. So they won’t come. Or if they do, they will of course be immediately deported, just like we immediately deport illegals now — just ask Obama’s aunty.

And since they don’t have the “biometric” ID card and are known illegals, they won’t be allowed to live in subsidized public housing — just ask Obama’s aunty.

The political class seems to get stupider every day. We, legal citizens, will have to walk around with ID cards that the government can use to track our every movement while they give away benefits to illegal aliens like they do today — just ask Obama’s aunty.

And that stupidest of jackasses, Linseed Graham, is leading the charge.

"It's the nub of solving the immigration dilemma politically speaking," Mr. Schumer said in an interview. The card, he said, would directly answer concerns that after legislation is signed, another wave of illegal immigrants would arrive. "If you say they can't get a job when they come here, you'll stop it."

Slime-bag Schumer was instrumental in the 1986 Amnesty. He also assured Americans then - concerned about "another wave of" illegals - that with "employee sanctions" in that bill "you'll stop it."

After Schumer 1986 Amnesty legalized 2.5 million, we now have 12-20 million more illegals and the slime-bag is again selling his @#$% with assurances he knows are false.

Anything led by Chuck Schumer has to be assumed, on its face, to be fatally flawed.

How will this be any more effective than the current laws requiring proof you’re in the country legally (generally, a birth certificate) to be employed?

I see a whole new cottage industry of fake ID’s.

And of course telling people they can’t work without a card is like telling a drunk on probation w/no license that he can’t drink and drive.

That works REALLY well.

This reminds me of a conversation I had a few weeks ago with a woman who works as a nurse. She works on contracts, so she sees a lot of hospitals. She was a bit of a lefty about healthcare because she saw the difficult side of managed care. However, one comment she made stuck with me: She said, "illegals get the best care, because there's no gatekeeper."

Only legals will have to prove their citizenship to work or get benefits. And who are we kidding about whether or not these cards will be able to be faked?

“Mr. Schumer said in an interview. The card, he said, would directly answer concerns that after legislation is signed, another wave of illegal immigrants would arrive.”

I can’t believe Schumer actually admitted that!
When we amnestied the last group of illegals, there were about 3 million...that brought us 20 million.

If this one passes, looking at it historically, this amnesty will get us about 100 million more and the USA will cease to exist.

ID for citizens is NOT the answer!

Secure the border, enforce the law.
