A man charged with the rape and murder of a teenage girl has been linked to another child's killing after the discovery of more remains.
US registered sex offender John Albert Gardner III pleaded not guilty last week to the murder and rape of 17-year-old Californian girl Chelsea King, whose body was found in a shallow grave in northern San Diego last week shortly after she disappeared while jogging.
Now Gardner is a suspect in another murder case, after the bones of 14-year-old Amber Dubois were recovered at the weekend from a remote area outside San Diego.
Amber had vanished a year ago and was last seen near her school, just 16km from the same crime scene where Chelseas body was found.
Police issued a brief statement today saying Gardner is a suspect in both murders.
"The Amber Dubois crime scene is still being processed and John Albert Gardner III remains a focus of the investigation."
Gardner is already potentially facing the death penalty and is expected back in court tomorrow.
He was jailed for six years in 2000 for molesting a 13-year-old neighbor in San Diego. He has also been charged with the attempted rape of another woman December in the same park where Chelsea disappeared.

John Albert Gardner III is ripe for the death penalty, ain't he?
Yet another example of the sheer utter and complete stupidity of Megan's Law. Violent sex offenders belong in prison at a minimum, not on some stupid list that cannot protect anyone.
...and the Judge who let him out?
In a just world he would be.
He's in California though.
Don’t forget those who elected the Judge.
appointments
He was sentenced to thirty years but plea-bargained it down to six with the DA (even though the shrinks had recommended against releasing him because he was considered violent and they thought that he would reoffend, as he did). I think there’s some folks with some explaining to do.
The justice system KNEW this guy was a predator and still released him back into society. The justice system also knows there is no successful rehabilitation for these monsters but keeps creating more victims.
If he was incarcerated for life or DP the FIRST time, these kids would not have died at this guys hands.
It must have come from the perp. It just "happened" to come a week after Gardner was arrested?
So, was a no-death-penalty deal struck with the DAs?
Yeah, that seemed just a bit coincidental.
This is going on all over the place. We have had two teenage girls murdered here by sex offenders, the latest just last year by a known sexual predator, who was out on “supervised release”. What that meant was he wore a radio ankle collar, and listed an abandoned house as his address when in fact he was homeless and living on the streets. A 16 year old girl met hem crossing a lot, he hit on her, she giggled, and he murdered her and hid the body.
The other one was a registered sex offender AND a violent mental case who was living at home with Mom and Dad who were scared to death of him. He wandered into the local McDonalds one night right before closing, walked up to a 17 year old girl he had never met and who was cleaning tables, and stabbed her to death with the knife he brought with him.
Violent sex offenders only get more violent. Releasing them on bond or parole only guarantees that somebody else’s young daughter is going to be violently taken from them.
This isn’t going to change any time soon, so the only thing you can do is remain hyper-vigilant and be aware who the Authorities are moving into your neighborhood, and be prepared to defend whatever you hold dear by yourself.
Someone knew of this guy’s dangerous nature. Why didn’t they come forward?
My first guess would be attorney-client privilege....
Somewhere there's a lawyer who is mighty proud of the good job he did plea bargaining this guy down to a 6 year prison term, and was well paid for it. Two dead teenage girls is just the price to be paid for his next Mercedes.
I think all lawyers who defend guys like this should be required to show them pictures of their own wives and daughters, with their names and where they work or go to school.
Our criminal justice system (from both the defense and prosecution standpoints) has become too much about the “win at all costs.” Lawyers are no longer interested in doing justice.
We have another one going on right now. The hiker from Portland State who is “lost” in the Columbia River Gorge - this morning’s news interviewed a woman who was recently on that same trail. She says that she was accosted by a man who exposed himself to her.
The people of San Diego will be rioting if they cut a deal with this perp so quick.
Isn’t that special! I heard about the lost hiker but not that aspect of it. That’s just up the road from me...
Watch the movie ‘Law Abiding Citizen.’ It deals with this issue in a most interesting way (although the ending was sort of lame).
The tip came from a family whose kids found human hair while the family was on an outing. The mother and father ignored what the kids told them until after this guy was arrested for killing Chelsea, they then remembered what their kids had told them and called the police. Acting on their tip the cops found Amber's remains.
Hopefully they won't make any deal with this a**hat but this is CA(of which I am a resident).
I don’t know about that. In CA, the death penalty is essentially equivalent to life without parole anyway.
Two young teens were murdered here on the coast a few years back and a few other woman over the decades dissappeard.
No one ever charged in those cases.
Then the gal who was murdered as she was snatched from her sisters apt parking lot in broad daylight.
That was the Willberger case.
The monster was on his way over here to the coast for a court date and decided to kill that lil gal on the way.
He kept her alive for two days torturing her.
Yeah we have alot here.
And that creep who killed the two IIRC teens who were freinds with his daughter and his Dad was in jail for murder too.
Remember they demolished the home so as not to leave a reminder?
Yeah and he buried on under his newly cemented yard the other one IIRC stuffed in a barrel.
Then we had the Green River killer dump his victems here.
It was on my septic guys Grandparents property unbeknownst to them.
They use to have groups of kids come up and ride horses on the property and one of the group leaders kept complaining of a horrid smell when they rode in one area....
Too many in our lil state.
Get a conviction before sentencing him, please.
That said, its too bad we can’t make the bleeding-heart morons that let him out stand trial with him.
“Gardner is already potentially facing the death penalty and is expected back in court tomorrow. “
Appears California may be wanting to kill this scum.
In the extremely unlikely event that the court actually gives him the death penalty, his is far more apt to died of old age before all the appeals and protests are over.
Unfortunately, that happens in Texas, too.
I’d rather him be in jail on death row waiting to be executed than even the remotest possibility of him being “life” with a chance to get out someday.
Frankly, I’m kind of hoping he just goes into “Gen Pop”, with the moniker “Child Molester & Murderer”.. he’ll get his, one way or the other. (or both)
