Official Calls For Mandatory STD Testing Of Teens Starting In 8th Grade
WFSB - Channel 3 (CBS Affiliate) ^ | March 9, 2010

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Sexually transmitted diseases is a topic that many people don't like to talk about, especially with teenagers. But, the director of the regional health department in New London is calling for the mandatory testing of teenagers from eighth-grade through 12th-grade students in New London and Groton.

The hope is that other shoreline communities will follow suit and begin testing their teenagers as well.

Vanessa Reed works for the school-based health clinic that operates inside New London High School. She said there's an epidemic of STDs infecting Connecticut teenagers, particularly teenage girls, and it's no surprise that it's happening in diverse, urban areas.

Reed said, "From my experience, what I've seen, the majority of them are sexually active."

There are about 674 cases of chlamydia per 100,000 people in New London. In New Haven, a much larger city, there are close to 1,200 cases per 100,000 people.

Baker Salsbury, the executive director of the shoreline's regional health department, is proposing a 10-year plan to eradicate STDs, which included blunt health classes where teens hear real stories and see graphic pictures of infected teens. The plan also includes a requirement that every student get involved in some sort of after-school program and mandatory testing of all students for STDs beginning in eighth grade.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News Reporter Heather Hegedus asked Salsbury if he believed it was a bit too radical for some communities.

Salsbury said, "I think some people may see it as that, but that's simply because of the sensitivity that surrounds adolescent sexual activity in our society."

The school board and city officials would have to approve mandatory testing, but at New London High School, Reed said she thinks parents would be receptive to the idea.

Reed said, "Anyone who is going to the clinic in a high school knows. Obviously there's a stigma, but if it's mandatory and kids have to do it, and it's sort of like me checking your hemoglobin when you get a physical."

Reed said anyone contact Ledge Light Health District if you're interested in joining his task force, but Salsbury said the program will fail unless students take the lead in the program.

Sex them up and then send them out for field experiments.

This is NOT part of the schools’ authority. Spend more time and resources TEACHING ACTUAL FACTS - math, reading, science, history - not expanding into social services/big brother.

We need to abolish public schools. Completely. The teachers’ unions will crmuble, and as private schools increase, they will hire the more competent ones that don’t look at students as their next potential sexual conquest.

I’m really starting to dislike that word, mandatory. Freedom is a much better word.

“Start with the school board members then to all elected officials . Make it a condition of employment .”

Now that is a brilliant idea...You need to add all the teachers and administrators, too.

I so agree. My kids are grown but I would find a way to homeschool. The public schools are no longer just useless, they have become dangerous.

Monthly tests ... Make the results public.

What we need to do is to bring back shame. We can do that by testing everyone and make everyone prove his/her identity and then post the results!

“But no mandatory STD testing at the gay bathhouses...”

Why bother? They are all infected with multiple STD’s. The only question would be which ones.

About ten years ago some silly public official decided testing teenagers for STDs would be a good idea. She got slammed.

“Code Red” - House Target List on Health Care
The National Republican Congressional Committee has published a target list on health care. In addition to continuing to contact the five Tennessee Democrat Congressmen, you can go http://www.votervoice.net/link/clickthrough/ext/94697.aspx to contact some of these targets. Much of the talk following Obama’s announcement has focused on how to defeat this second bill through reconciliation, but that is misleading because the first step to defeating Obamacare is not by concentrating on defeating the “fixer” bill but by defeating the Senate bill in the House when it goes to the floor for an up-or-down vote on Thursday, March 18th.

Hell yes, and mandatory drug testing! Swab the little SOB’s for gunshot residue daily! Results of these tests can be used to convince the hooligans that their sentence can be reduced by turning in mommy and daddy for owning guns, or polluting our atmosphere, or not giving enough to Friends of the Polar Bear Cubs, or not contributing to Sierra Club, or any some such, as determined by some overpaid public “education” pawn.

It’s brilliant!

This makes me want to club baby seals on YouTube. If I had a therapist, she’d no doubt ask me how this makes me feel. Then, I’d tell her that the devolution of our methods of training our offspring has led to this juncture, and I’d tell her that a junior high principal in Utah makes 120,000 a year and state employed engineers make 70,000 and then the whole thing would end up in an argument over whether I really need my prescription refilled or not, or if my meds need adjustment. That’s if I had a therapist.

Hopefully, the whole thing won’t end back up with baby seals and bear cubs, but that’s what’s being discussed in the classrooms of America every day. A generation of idiots on the public dole.

Why should any ‘good’ parent mind if his children are given an STD blood test? Git on up there! I encourage this! Why? Because the more invasive they become, the more likely parents become offended.

Because the more children are homeschooled, the more children will have discretion.

Homeschooled children may be our only hope.

It is a long way from my 3rd grade school teacher taking me to the nurses room, and checking my hair and scalp with her fingers back in the 50’s. Not sure what she was looking for or what gave her the idea. Maybe it was due to my brother and I played in the bathtub with toy boats and did not pay attention to the soap.
