Chief justice unsettled by Obama's public criticism of Supreme Court

Reporting from Washington - Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. told law students Tuesday that he found it "very troubling" to be surrounded by loudly cheering critics at President Obama's State of the Union address, saying it was reason enough for the justices not to attend the annual speech to Congress.

"To the extent the State of the Union has degenerated into a political pep rally, I'm not sure why we are there," Roberts said at the University of Alabama School of Law.

Well stated.

This stuff didn't exactly start at the Wellstone funeral, but the idea is the same.

Democrats are exceedingly uncouth these days.

[Democrats are exceedingly uncouth these days.]

Obama was spawned in a big city political machine where constituents applaud, cheer and vote automatically. In that kind of environment a young politician can be lulled into believing he is a messiah rather than a token.

I have a feeling there won’t be many Supreme Court justices present at the next State of The Union address.

That had to be one of the more embarrassing moments for the Man Child since he’s been elected. It’s such a shame that the office is being disgraced my his presence in the way that it is. Hopefully our country will correct this mistake.

Didn't take much lulling.

I was so happy to read Chief Justice Robert's remarks. He is exactly right; to be subjected to Obama's comments and sit stone-faced while surrounded by rude boisterous Democrats applauding the equally rude President. Wasn't there a lot of screeching about Joe Wilson being "out of line"? Obama has no sense of decorum. Scalia and Thomas skipped...I hope next year none of them show up.

The Supreme Ct. Justices are human; Obammy would be wise not to get on their fighting side. But, too late now.

“rather than a token.”
Yup. Elected to be president while being black.

If Obozo is impeached, charged with high treason and found guilty. Roberts will send him to the gallows.

Nilbama picks fights with everyone. You can do that if you are Chuck Norris. But not when you are the chocolate Barney Fife. Nobody respects or fears this occupant of 1600 Penn Av.

Roberts should have stood up and asked to see Obama’s birth certificate.

It might get interesting if the SCOTUS decides to hear lawsuits over healthcare. A little paybeck might be in order.

I attended the Wellstone memorial service. I really did not like him as a senator or his politics, but I was a student at the University of Minnesota, and thought it would be interesting. I left when the booed the Governor Ventura, not because I particularly liked him, simply because I thought I was going to be sick.

The Constitution doesn’t say that the State of the Union message is annual, or that it’s a speech. It is to occur “from time to time,” and I believe Wilson is the first President to turn it into an address before Congress.

Will our next President have the courage to abolish the corrupt tradition of an annual spectacle?

We can be sure that Obama’s STFU speeches will continue to be shrill, unseemly lie-fests.

It would really piss him off if the SCOTUS ruled his Health Care Bill Unconstitutional.
