Mixed-sex submarine crews 'would not be useful'
Prtismouth News ^ | 3/10/2010 | Matt Jackson

A man who commanded four British submarines has said that allowing women to serve in them would be difficult. The navy is looking to send 20 women officers to serve in Britain's four Vanguard class boats.

The navy said it is looking at the design of its larger submarines to see if mixed sex accommodation could be incorporated and is looking again at the reason it has given to ban women.

But Commander Jeff Tall said the navy's move to send women to serve in nuclear boats on a trial would not be popular in the service.

He said: 'It's down to the cost of having boats without full crews rather than any kind of gender equality progress.'

Cdr Tall, who until 2008 was in charge of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, said the daily work routine made mixed-sex boats a risk. He said: 'It's dirty, physical work a lot of the time and when things go wrong you are cheek by jowl.

I’ve no experience in sub boats, but the close quarters could be a strain and morale problem on a mixed sex crew. With the boomers out so long, this could cause unnecessary friction.

Underwater bordello. I wish I had thunk of that first! I’d be richer than Larry Elison!

If they were anything like submarine tender women, they'll get knocked up to avoid getting underway for a week anyway.

Another liberal experiment headed for failure. They can’t get rid of the military so they’ll just destroy it from within.

Just think. No deodorant or cologne. Men deal with it when other men smell (as long as they smell too). Add women to the mix and moral will suffer.

Details:

Considering that there’s limited space on a sub, now we add

1. Separate sleeping quarters.

2. Separate showers.

3. Separate heads.

4. Ship Doctor who has expertise in women’s issues.

5. Ship store must stock toiletry items for both sexes.

Is a nursery space and a Pediatrician next? Jack Lemmon would’ve loved this.

Maybe they could have one of the two crews on a few of the Boomers be all female.

Although they'd tend to synch up their cycles, and then heaven help the enemy at "that time" of the month. :)

Oh, I don't know, maybe that could turn into our secret weapon. Think about it - would you want to risk being in/on the craft that ticked off that particular sub? It's true that some of us ladies get a wee bit cranky. :)

From what I hear, the modern subs are fairly spacious and could accommodate a nursery and day care for the little ones.
