The U.S. Education Department announced an investigation Wednesday into whether Los Angeles schools are serving the needs of students who do not know English.
Ramon Cortines, superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, is cooperating with the investigation, officials said.
Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Russlynn Ali said only 3 percent of students in English Learner programs are proficient in math and English.
"At this time, we have reached no conclusion as to whether any violations of federal law exist," Ali said. "But the number of EL students and children of color in Los Angeles is large. It is critical that all students in the district receive equal access to a quality education. If civil rights violations are found, we will seek to put an end to them promptly."
About one-third of the district's students are in English Learner programs, the Los Angeles Times said.
The investigation is the department's first major formal civil rights action during the Obama administration, officials said.
"This is a big deal after eight years of lackluster enforcement," Thomas A. Saenz, president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund, said.
I wonder if the people complaining are here legally? Or does that even need to be asked?
When I first came to this country, I was 7 and I did not speak English. Within a year, I was speaking english, and within two years you couldn’t tell that I wasn’t born here. Kids are like sponges, kids adapt. This is a huge waste of money and resources. When you come to a different country YOU adapt to it. It does not adapt to You!

The number of civil service positions that will be created by the state, aided and abetted by the feds, will be completely out of proportion to the actual needs of the community that requires aid. Furthermore, the aid language will be written to maximize the pork dollars to the government, not anyone in actual need.
Your existence is proof of the idiocy of today’s “education establishment”. I went to school with a few children such as you, but sadly children without families, children who DID NOT KNOW WHAT COUNTRIES THEY CAME FROM, children with numbers tattooed on their forearms.
Put into class alongside American kids and they “sponged” up English, learned, played and socialized with us, and in a couple of cases that shamed the “native born” ended up at the top of the class.
One boy, Jewish, but with the name of the Italian father of the GI who brought him here, grew up to become the editor of a small, but daily newspaper. That was education in former times.

I doubt many of those who send their kids to the LA Dewey camps give a fig about English. I will also bet that they resent Obama’s thugs from forcing it upon them. I also think this is a rift within the Democratic cults, because I would have thought they would have picked on a red state underfunded district to bully not a NEA lefty stronghold like Lost Angelos.
