Senators [Graham and Schumer] give Obama a bipartisan plan on immigration
LA Times ^ | 03/12/2010 | Peter Nicholas

Posted on 03/12/2010 1:15:22 AM PST by iowamark

The president is encouraged, but healthcare politics could jeopardize the proposal.

A pair of influential senators presented President Obama with a three-page blueprint for a bipartisan agreement to overhaul the nation's immigration system, but the proposal's viability is threatened by politics surrounding the healthcare debate.

Sens. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), in a 45-minute meeting Thursday in the Oval Office, also asked for Obama's help in rounding up enough Republican votes to pass an immigration bill this year.

Although details of their blueprint were not released, Graham said the elements included tougher border security, a program to admit temporary immigrant workers and a biometric Social Security card that would prevent people here illegally from getting jobs.

Graham also said the proposal included "a rational plan to deal with the millions of illegal immigrants already in the United States." He did not elaborate on what the plan would be. But in a recent interview, he suggested that onerous measures were unrealistic....

Even without the healthcare obstacle, passing an immigration bill would be difficult. Schumer has been trying to line up additional Republican co-sponsors in hopes of broadening the bill's bipartisan support. None has signed up.

Those who attended the meeting said that Obama committed to helping find Republican votes. But he also conceded that in a polarized Senate, that was a difficult mission.

"He was very frank about the challenge of moving this or anything else in the U.S. Congress," said John Wilhelm, president of the labor union Unite Here.

What, you don’t think he has this planned all along?

Not to mention, 30 million new Democrats in all the major electoral states will guarantee a total one party system under a National Socialist form of Government.

Say Adios to the Constitution. They will certainly eliminate it or rewrite it.

“biometric Social Security card”

This is what they really want for ALL of us. Healthcare and this card and we’re their serfs for life. And I don’t believe for a nano second it’s only for illegals or their work program. McCains in on this as well - sounds like another Soros order.

John McCain is behind this, mark my words. He can’t do anything right now in the way of his RINO political shenanigans, as he up for re-election, so he is using Grahamnesty as his surrogate to do his bidding. That way he’s got the best of both worlds, deceiving his AZ constituents into thinking he has grown more conservative (just in time for his re-up) while pursuing his true liberal propensities via his queen, Lindsey.

...and hence the reason to elect J.D. Hayworth. The very thought that Hayworth might win is enough to keep McCain from grandstanding the issue away from Graham. They’re going to sell you that it is 80% security and 20% amnesty until it passes and you find out it is 20% security and 80% amnesty. And that will be before Nancy and her chums get involved.

I don’t even want this touched until a new Congress can be sworn in, hopefully with the GOP in control of one or both houses and the Census having already been taken.

So we want to give American health care and now we want to make all illegals Americans? Graham is an idiot.

Sorry to be pessimist, but I don’t think we can do anything with McCain until at least January 2011. If he win the primary in August, he will vote whatever he wants thinking he doesn’t need to fight from the right anymore. If he lose, he will also vote whatever he wants, as nothing else to lose. Even if he won and gets 3rd party challenger from the right, I doubt McCain will move to the right during the campaign period.

Since the mid sixties, our state has always had one liberal and one conservative US Senator.

The GOP RINO elite made sure that Graham had no primary challenger and fear of a Dem super majority (a fear well grounded as it turned out)on Capital Hill got him reelected in the general.

But even still America, please accept our apologies for Graham and remember that we DID give you Wilson and DeMint.

The only change needed to our immigration laws is to offer $1,000 bonuses to law enforcement officers for each illegal they bring in for deportation.

For a measly $20B, we could round them all up and deport them. They cost us 10x that much every year in free medical and public schools for their kids.

Ha! As if that is hard!

I can almost guarantee that the 2 Clueless, Maine, Hags, Voino-Bitch and perhaps, Lugar, would join Grahamnesty, which is more than enough to overcome a filibuster

That said, I predict it will NOT come up for a vote this year. WHY?

Because there is NO way, Juan McLame wants to have to go on record and vote for/against this before November.

They could perhaps get 60 Senate votes for amnesty but I doubt that they could get a House majority. Too many Dems are now fearing for their seats.

Oh, I wouldn’t underestimate Graham. I think this resurrection of amnesty has many reasons behind it.

In no particular order:
1)I think it’s an attempt to re-energize Obama’s base. If Amnesty can do that then Obama’s poll numbers may start to rise and Obama may try to claim they are going up because of his Health care push.

2)I think that if or when Obama-care falls, the Dems and the press will pretend it wasn’t really all that they worked on the last year or so and they will focus like a laser on Amnesty. It will be a diversion and an attempt to give Obama and Democrats something they can say they did or tried to do.

3)Some Democrats may see Obama’s weakness in the polls and with Health care as an ‘angle’ to push their own agenda (amnesty for one)in exchange for their vote on health care.

4)If the Democrats can energize their illegal immigrant base, then maybe they can save a few seats this year, and then maybe Obama can add to the voter registration millions of illegal aliens which will surely want massive government health care.

All in all, I think the plan is smart, but they started on it a little to late. (I hope.)

Graham is a McCainiac but he is worse. Graham is really a Trojan horse pushing left wing agendas. Graham knows full well that cap and trade (government control of our lives) is not a good trade for the promise of energy production.

Graham may be the most dangerous and dishonest Republican Senator.

SC... a solid conservative state had the chance to toss Nancy but the SCGOP let outsiders and the RNC over run the primaries. Hope AZ voters are paying attention.

I agree about the apology, but our FRiend is among the very few who have our Republican Party in SC figured out:

The GOP RINO elite made sure that Graham had no primary challenger and fear of a Dem super majority (a fear well grounded as it turned out)on Capital Hill got him reelected in the general.

Happy Rain, would you be interested in helping the Scotsman and I pressure our SC GOP to CLOSE our primaries so that we can at least have a prayer of fielding a conservative challenger to Graham the next time around?
