Amnesty International may be best known to American audiences for bringing to light horror stories overseas such as the disappearance of political activists in Argentina or the abysmal conditions inside South African prisons under apartheid. But in a new report on pregnancy and childbirth care in the U.S., Amnesty details the maternal health care crisis in this country as part of a systemic violation of women's rights.
The report, titled "Deadly Delivery," notes that the likelihood of a woman dying in childbirth in the U.S. is five times greater than in Greece, four times greater than in Germany, and three times greater than in Spain. Every day in the U.S., more than two women die of pregnancy-related causes, with the maternal mortality ratio doubling from 6.6 deaths per 100,000 births in 1987 to 13.3 deaths per 100,000 births in 2006. (And as shocking as these figures are, Amnesty notes that the actual number of maternal deaths in the U.S. may be a lot higher since there are no federal requirements to report these outcomes and since data collection at the state and local levels needs to be improved.) "In the U.S., we spend more than any country on health care, yet American women are at greater risk of dying from pregnancy-related causes than in 40 other countries," says Nan Strauss, the report's co-author, who spent two years investigating the issue of maternal mortality worldwide. Such BS. Anyone who is pregnant is able to access free care during their pregnancy. The government will pay for the delivery and all the pre-natal care.
Some people choose to drink, smoke and do drugs during their pregnancy. When the outcome is bad they want to blame someone else.
And white women in the U.S. are much more likely to break a hip than black women. Which often leads to death.
Are these Al Gore's friends? Why do they present themselves as experts on subjects that they know nothing about? Oh never mind, they're liberals.
These folks need to go back to square one and compare black women in the U.S. to black women in other countries. Then tell us how "bad" off they are. NOT.
As for "access" to care, look into whether the problem is access or failure to use care that is available.

My wife and I have three kids, 8.8 lbs, 9.7 lbs and 10.8 lbs. Wife decided after our youngest son was born that there would be no more kids, and after watching what she went through I had to agree with her.
Her obgyn was explaining to us that the average baby size in the US now (mostly due to good prenatal care and diet) continues to rise, making childbirth (especially first time mothers, who are getting older and older now) harder and harder. A 18 year old girl having a big baby is a lot easier the first time than a 30+ year old woman.
Health care has absolutely nothing to do with this study or percentages at all, a big part of it is the choices we make that reduce or increase our odds of complications.
No, I’d say it’s probably black mothers and babies. They have always had a high mortality rate, partly because of poor nutrition (Hispanics and other immigrant groups, even though poor, generally tend to have a better diet) and the fact that many of these mothers are in their early teens. Their health is poor even before they become pregnant.
For some reason, there also seems to be a real aversion to pre-natal care in this group, and it is very hard to get them under a doctor’s care (even though it’s free for them). They need to do things like eat a good diet, take prenatal vitamins to lessen the possibility of certain congenital problems in their babies, and be watched for early signs of complications, such as high blood pressure, fluid retention, etc. However, you can’t force them to go to the doctor, and for some reason, they won’t go until labor begins.
Interestingly, I once read that there was a rise in infant and child mortality among whites when doctors began encouraging women to gain virtually no weight during pregnancy. I think a more rational view is now taken. But that’s the flip side of not enough prenatal care...too much!

If these statistics are accurate, it probably has a lot to do with the very low birth rate in Europe. If a woman has 0-1 children, she is a loss less likely to have complications during childbirth.
