Why do ATF employees question fitness of agent in 'toy gun' seizure?
Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 12 March, 2010 | David Codrea

Posted on 03/13/2010 6:34:10 PM PST by marktwain

When we first met ATF Special Agent Kelven Crenshaw, he was telling KOINlocal6, Portland, that a shipment of toy guns the agency had seized could be "easily retro-fitted into dangerous weapons":

"With minimal work it could be converted to a machine gun," Crenshaw said.

To prove his credentials as a professional firearms expert, Crenshaw proceeded to insert a magazine backwards—on video. Click here to watch and pay attention at at the 1:17 mark.

In my March 9 follow-up on this story, I mentioned a related three-part series at Pajamas Media by writer Bob Owens. Click the respective links for parts one, two and three. The whole thing is just excellent, but something he said in his last installment really caught my attention:

This is apparently the same Special Agent Kelven Crenshaw that ATF whistleblower site Cleanup ATF says is a former assistant director demoted and moved for incompetence, reprisals against his own employees, and regulation violations.

Regular readers will remember CleanUp ATF. They're a group of "whistleblowing" bureau insiders who are trying to draw attention to incompetence and corruption. I've cited them a few times as yet another basis for demanding oversight hearings to establish personal accountability for those responsible for abuses--and asked why the "mainstream press" is apparently uninterested.

So what's CleanUpATF's beef with Special Agent Crenshaw? Here's what they say:

Those 'toy guns' can be converted to fully functional M4s by easily replacing two pieces.

First, replace the upper receiver with an M4 upper receiver. Then, replace the lower receiver with an M4 lower receiver. It's that simple.

K/Crenshaw is an affirmative action clown working for an agency filled with cowboy wannabe morons who couldn’t police their way out of a wet paper bag.
The FBI have been over rated for about 30 years. Gee, that would be about the time affirmative action kicked in. What a coincidence.

You are probably a “gun expert” but I call BS on your claim that you can take a upper and a lower receiver and turn an airsoft into a “fully funtional” M4.

What cracks me up is that if somebody has an M4, first of all they have the required permit for a select fire weapon, right? Well why in heck would they build an M4 around an airsoft gun? Why not do what everybody else does who builds AR’s and build the gun around the lower receiver (which requires paperwork to buy, unlike the toy airsoft guns)

I don’t see any logic in what you are claiming. Please explain why somebody would build an AR out of an airsoft gun?!

Just to help you out. What Real Saxophonist is saying in quite simple:

When you replace both the upper and lower on a rife, you have replaced the entire rifle - those are all the components.

He was being sarcastic....

I got a good laugh out of it though. LOL

Basically, you take the top end of an M4 and toss away the airsoft upper assembly. Then you take a lower end of an M4 and toss away the airsoft lower... basically, you remove the entire airsoft toy from the picture and just put in a real M4 rifle.

I said it in another post, and I’ll say it here. We in the industry will not accept a ruling based on the modification of this toy to a gun UNLESS an agent puts the gun to his shoulder and fires one full 30 round magazine of US military spec ammunition (M855) though it. We will not accept another Bob Stewart BS “it fired a primed cartridge”. Real ammo or it doesn’t fly folks. BATFE has lost all credibility with the industry and they continue to dig that hole deeper. For once, people like James P. Vann should take the high road and put his anti-gun agenda away. He’s trampled all over the Constitution enough. How about staying within the confines and the spirit of the law???

I commend the folks over at cleanupatf.org for what they are trying to accomplish. Given how the BATFE has treated others who have tried to clean up the agency in the past, the guys over there trying to do it now clang when they walk and they have my utmost respect.

Save the brass and load your own - start your ladder with 42 gr Varget (stable powder) - good for the 168 BTHP Sierra!

A few years ago, I converted a Smith and Wesson Model 36 into a Bushmaster XM15-E2S. It’s easy. First, I replaced the barrel, receiver, and sights. Then I removed the small, wooden grips and fit a polymer pistol grip. I swapped the hammer, hand, and rebound slide for a bolt carrier, hammer, disconnector assembly. When I replaced the 5 shot cylinder with a 30 round clip, it was all finished. And both are black, the same color, which proves they’re the same gun!

This is the biggest pile of anti gun BS I have seen in ages. I'm a gunsmith and I have put together many AR’s and this guy is a bold faced liar. He can not be stupid enough to believe his own line of carp.
There is nothing in that toy that I would use in the construction of any real firearm. There is no way that he can build a functioning AR out of those toy guns. He is a grandstanding liar.
If that isn't clear enough I can find some other words that he can understand.

M1A Socom 16. Tried my own loads with the Scirroco 165gr, really looking forward to using this LC brass, never have tried it but from all the forums its the brass to build a load with.

Not expecting MOA with the short sight radius and fat front sights on the Socom but considering the NM front sight to help for tighter groups. Actually what I want to do is put a scout scope on the rail and confirm the gun will shot 2-3” with the right load. I hope....

Thanks for the tip on powder.

Affirmative Action? Is Crenshaw black? ATF has been harrassing shooters for a lot longer than thirty years. It was over thirty years ago when a few of my friends decided to give up their FFL licenses to sell because of that harrassment.

The American work force has degenerated over the last thirty years because of the dumbing down of American students and consequently American society.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but if you are claiming that Affirmative Action caused the FBi and the ATF to degenerate, you don’t have a clue of what you are talking about.

Yes, there are other factors involved with the degeneration of the ATF, FBI, and the rest of the work force just as you’ve noted. Affirmative action was/is a major factor, and refusal to aknowledge it’s role in matters tells me that you don’t know what you are talking about or you are a recipient of the benefits of affirmative action.

Is your brain working today? No humor in your system at all? The guy was saying that in order to make this air soft into a machine gun, you simply replace it with an M4. In other words, you can't covert it to a machine gun. Learn to read or take a reading comprehension course before making asinine comments about other reader's comments.

I detest Affirmative Action. Just like I detest every other leftist, government program that has resulted in many of my people becoming dependent on handouts and voting for Democrats. I notice that you acknowledge the other factors I mentioned. You didn’t do that in your first post.

All that says to me is that you prefer to blame Affirmative Action for whatever has gone wrong in those agencies. That is a racist way of thinking. Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t care less whether you are racist. It is a free country. I have always viewed racists as flawed people who NEED to feel superior. They are not. Quite the contrary.

I did not refuse to acknowledge Affirmative Action as a factor. It is not the only factor, but it is the only one you chose to mention. I hate that. What racists do is denigrate every black person, no matter whether they are competent or not, in any field.

Finally, I am not a recipient of the benefits of Affirmative Action. I spent thirty years in the delivery of mental health services. I moved up into management and more than earned my salary. As far as I’m concerned your inability to comprehend that my remarks simply questioned your narrow view speaks volumns. So really, you don’t know what you are talking about because you can’t see past your miserable racist view of everything.
