SIERRA VISTA - An 82-year-old woman takes matters into her own hands after she's attacked in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Sierra Vista.
Police said the suspect Stephen Prickett beat the woman with her own cane until she grabbed her gun from her purse and started firing.
After a few days in the hospital, she's out and told News 4 all about it.
She said she was just walking to her car with some groceries when she was approached by the suspect. She said, "In a very mild voice he said, 'this is your day. You are too old to be alive anyway.'"
Moments later she said he grabbed her cane and started beating her and she's got the bruises to prove it. She said, "I got boo boos where I didn't know I had a place to put boo boos."
She eventually went for the gun in her purse and opened fire. She didn't hit him but said it still saved her life. She said, "In the long run I think it saved me because if I hadn't shot the thing no one would have known there was anything wrong and come running."
Wal-Mart employees came to her rescue and police weren't far behind.
Police said the victim did absolutely everything right. As for the suspect, they said he made a big mistake. Tracy Grady with the Sierra Vista Police Department said, "He picked the wrong woman. She was the wrong target."
And the self proclaimed "stubborn, old broad" said you can say that again. She said, "If I go naturally or to a sickness or something, fine. I'm ready to go, but I'm not ready to let some idiot like that take me out."
The victim said owning a gun isn't for everyone but added with the proper training it's a good idea particularly for elderly people like her that are becoming victim's more and more often.
The suspect was arrested shortly after the attack. He's facing multiple charges including attempted murder.
“She said, “In a very mild voice he said, ‘this is your day. You are too old to be alive anyway.’”
He’ll get paroled and become head of Obamacare Health Dole Death Panel...
I think all seniors whould have a gun to protect them when the Gov’t “ advisory” councils decide they are too old.
This is almost as good as the 67 year old Nam vet, who beat the living crap out of a young gang banger. ;-)
Wow!!! I live in Sierra Vista and this is the first I heard of this.
Good for her.
Too bad she didn’t shoot him.
No explanation for the attack. They don’t mention robbery or such. Glad she is okay.
Only thing she did wrong: She missed. Needs a little more range time.
Kudos to her nonetheless...
Three cheers for that gal!
I hope she goes to court when he is convicted and says, “well, I guess this is YOUR day, buster, and you certainly made MY day!”
“I’m not ready to let some idiot like that take me out.”
Good for her. She’s one tough lady!
Next time you're at the range, try pulling a gun out of a purse and hitting a target while somebody is BEATING YOU WITH A STICK! Most of us don't include this in our target practice regimen.
Okay, when you beat on an eighty-something lady with her own cane and she still manages to get the drop on you...it’s time to get out of crime.
Wonder what Gun she used. It’d take me some time to chamber a bullet in my Glock.
Maybe I need to get another gun. One can never have too many guns, ammo, or knives.
Point and pull the trigger until the loud noises stop.
Racking the slide and taking the safety off on your semi-auto is difficult to do one-handed while being assaulted.
“One can never have too many guns, ammo, or knives.”
I’m not sure I understand the phrase “too much ammunition.” For your next post, please write in “American”. ;-) I remember a news story about a house fire that spread to the garage where, the news reporter breathlessly announced, the owner had a thousand rounds of ammunition. I was just embarrassed for the poor guy - Imagine, only having that little on hand.....
“In a very mild voice he said, ‘this is your day. You are too old to be alive anyway.’”
He probably got tired of paying for her social security. ;-D
Why can’t these old people lay down and die like they are supposed to? (Hey wait! I’m old also! Never mind!)
SIERRA VISTA granny scares off bad guy with her pistol.
Hey Wasp, is she related to you?
Too bad she missed.
It was in the Herald - I guess the newsreader on the morning radio news didn’t mention it?
I don’t know how valid the comment was, but the local newspaper said that the perp managed to wrest the gun from granny but was unable to use it before the Wal-Mart employees subdued him.
The Herald article also said that SVPD was on scene within about a minute of the call. That’s not surprising, since there is almost always a cruiser in that area of town.
But, it was in the Herald on Sunday morning, I believe...
On line or paper copy? I didn’t see it on line
Paper copy. That may explain the discrepancy...
His utterance constitutes a hate crime. They should add an enhancement onto his sentance....bet they don’t. Good for her:-)
Thx. Found it.
I should search before posting!
i have heard that glock can be holstered in such a way as to allow it to automatically chamber the round as it is pulled from the holster. i would think that is dangerous but it could speed up the process.
One thing about Sierra Vista, there are law enforcement everywhere here.
Don’t even add on the DPS, DHS, Customs and Border Protection, FBI, etc., etc., etc.
Frankly, I think it’s better. You can expect an ol’ Nam vet not to take crap, but a little old lady pulling out and USING her gun in self-defense?!
Well now, think about it...Tombstone, AZ is just a few miles down the road from here.
We have certain traditions to uphold, don't ya' know?

My daughter and grandson just left my house 20 minutes ago.
Tombstone, AZ LOL!!
“You can expect an ol Nam vet not to take crap, but a little old lady pulling out and USING her gun in self-defense?!”
You have a point.
I luv em both!
Did you see the comments after this story?
My mother is 81. I’d like to send her down to Tucson to beat some sense into “Ed” with her cane.
Hey, it’s a wonderful vacation destination!
The sun is very warm today, but the wind is biting. Long sleeves are definitely called for; a windbreaker may become necessary.
Not to worry, it’s all for sale at the shops along Allen St.
Poor ol’ Ed - he’s a liberal and jus’ cain’t he’p it...
LOL, point well taken...
Yeah, too bad she didn't shoot him but she's got the right attitude.
That's right and it's hard to simulate being 82 years old too unless you've already been there.
Well, if so, I sure want her on my side!!!
A self defense semi automatic should have a round chambered.
A revolver is a very difficult firearm to hit with in Double Action. A semi automatic is much easier. You have to take that in consideration when choosing what to use.
A classic example of why one must never bother an old dog. Might still have one good bite left!
Well, I'd say it's more important to carry locked and loaded because an unloaded firearm is nothing more than a paperweight. But still you're correct: One can never have too many guns, ammo or knives. Just be sure you handle them correctly so as to be able to successfully defend yourself when you need to. As my favorite book character, Lazarus Long says: Live and learn, or don't live long. See the works of Robert A. Heinlein.
If you’re carrying for self defense, you should have one in the pipe already or it’s useless. Don’t feel quit comfortable with the safety features on the glock, then get something else. Personally, I don’t like them, I know it’s unlikely something will depress the little trigger pressure safety but that being the only thing between me and “bang” isn’t quite enough.
