"Air Force strikes in Gaza"

SNIPPET: "IDF retaliates for deadly Qassam attack: Air Force hits several Gaza targets, including metal foundry, smuggling tunnel; Vice PM Shalom says Israel to offer strong response to rocket attack that killed Thai worker Thursday"

SNIPPET: "IDF aircraft struck at least four targets in the Gaza Strip on Friday, a day after a rocket fired from the Palestinian enclave killed a Thai worker in Israel, Hamas security officials and witnesses said."

SNIPPET: "Israel also sent a letter of complaint to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who is due to visit Israel at the weekend, and to the UN Security Council.

A previously unknown group, Ansar al-Sunna, believed to share the hardline ideology of al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the rocket fire at Israel, as well as the al-Aqsa Martrys Brigades, a wing of the Fatah movement.

Earlier, Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai said that Israel holds Hamas accountable for attacks originating in the Gaza Strip regardless of the group that commits them."

Hamas ‘day of rage’ leads to violent incidents across Israel
Ha’aretz ^ | Last update - 23:36 16/03/2010 | Liel Kyzer, Jack Khoury, Fadi Eyadat and News Agencies
Posted on March 16, 2010 2:54:37 PM PDT by sofaman

IDF official: Neither Israel nor PA wants more conflict; police chief: This will not lead to third intifada.

.

After Hamas declared an official “day of rage” leading to clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces across Jerusalem on Tuesday, the violence seemed also to spread to other parts of the country.

Assailants in the central Israeli city of Jaffa hurled rocks at two public buses, cracking the back window of one of them. Rocks were also thrown at a truck near Kibbutz Mishmar Hanegev in the south and at two vehicles in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Abu Dor. There were no casualties in any of the incidents.

A senior Israel Defense Forces officer said that despite the outbreak of violence, neither the Palestinian Authority nor Israel was interested in seeing a renewal of conflict. “Everyone understands that we can’t let this region fall into unbridled violence,” he said.

Dozens of Palestinians fought with Israeli police earlier Tuesday in Jerusalem in response to Hamas’ call to protest Israel’s consecration of an ancient synagogue in the city the day before.

Needed: A Reset with Israel
Tue at 11:01am

The Obama Administration reaches out to some of the world’s worst regimes in the name of their engagement policy. America and our allies watch as sanctions are eased on Cuba. Letters are written to Iran’s mullahs only to see that regime start killing protestors in the streets of Tehran. Envoys are sent to North Korea as they continue to defy the world’s demand to give up their nuclear weapons. The Burmese military junta’s representative is allowed to travel to our nation’s capital. The President’s envoy for Sudan talks about giving that genocidal regime “gold stars,” while the President shakes hands with Venezuela’s tyrannical leader. In the midst of all this embracing of enemies, where does the Obama Administration choose to escalate a minor incident into a major diplomatic confrontation? With Iran, Cuba, Sudan, North Korea or Burma? No. With our treasured ally, Israel.

Last October, Secretary of State Clinton recognized Israel’s desire for peace in the Middle East and praised Israel’s “unprecedented” concessions for agreeing to halt settlement construction in the West Bank, a concession that did NOT include halting construction of apartments for Jews in Jerusalem. Even last week after planned construction was announced, Vice President Biden still expressed “appreciation” for the “significant” steps taken by the Israeli government to address this minor issue. Now, however, we see the Obama Administration has decided to escalate, make unilateral demands of Israel, and threaten the very foundation of the US-Israel relationship. This is quickly leading to the worst crisis in US-Israel relations in decades, and yet this did not have to happen. More importantly, it needs to stop before it spirals out of control. Vice President Biden should rein in the overheated Obama Administration rhetoric and chill the political spin masters’ fire as they visit the Sunday media shows to criticize Israel.

Once again, the Obama Administration is missing the boat on a very, very important issue. They need to go back to the basics and acknowledge Palestinian leaders have not progressed any peace process since President Obama was elected. As Israel makes concessions (and is still criticized by the Obama Administration), Arab leaders are just sitting back waiting for the White House to further pressure Israel. The Obama Administration needs to open its eyes and recognize that it is only Iran and her terrorist allies that benefit from this manufactured Israeli controversy. Vice President Biden was actually right when he said last week, before the construction announcement, that “one necessary precondition for progress is that the rest of the world knows...there is absolutely no space between the United States and Israel when it comes to security.” Right now, thanks to the Obama Administration, there is a chasm. It’s time for President Obama to push the reset button on our relations with our ally Israel.

- Sarah Palin

“47 MKs to PM: Continue building in Jerusalem”

SNIPPET: “Letter of support to Netanyahu asserts Israel’s right to construct in capital. Petition calls on prime minister to stand firm in face of international pressure for further ‘gestures’”

Attila Somfalvi

SNIPPET: “Forty-seven Knesset members from almost all Zionist factions, with the exception of Meretz, signed a letter initiated by MK Otniel Schneller (Kadima) to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the need to continue building in Jewish Jerusalem.

The signatories, including MK Tsachi Hanegbi (Kadima) and Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, express support for Israel’s right to construct in Jerusalem.

Schneller sent the letter to the prime minister in an attempt to show support during Netanyahu’s difficult dialogue with Washington.”

“U.N. Drops Muslim Brotherhood Figure From ‘Terrorist Finance’ List”
Mark Hosenball

SNIPPET: “The U.N. Security Council has quietly dropped Youssef Nada, a prominent financial and diplomatic representative of the Muslim Brotherhood, from an international sanctions list directed at curbing the activities of alleged terrorist financiers. The delisting of Nada, by the Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee, was announced by this official notice posted on the Security Council’s Web site. In addition to Nada himself, the notice declares that two businesses associated with him, Waldenberg AG of Liechtenstein and Youssef M. Nada & Co. GMBH of Vienna, also have been removed from the U.N. sanctions list.”

SNIPPET: “In an e-mail, Comras added: “Even though Nada may no longer be involved in funding Al Qaeda, he has made it clear a number of times that he will continue as a major financial supporter of Hamas . . .””

SNIPPET: “In a statement, a Treasury spokesperson said that the U.S. has supported “the removal of those individuals who are no longer appropriate for listing pursuant to that specific regime.” But the spokesperson added that Nada remains on the Treasury’s U.S.-only sanctions list.”

“Treasury Designates Gaza-Based Business, Television Station for Hamas Ties”

SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of the Treasury today designated the Islamic National Bank (INB) of Gaza for being controlled by Hamas, a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, and for providing financial services to Hamas members and employees, including members of the organization’s military wing. Treasury also today designated Al-Aqsa Television, a television station in Gaza financed and controlled by Hamas. Today’s actions, taken pursuant to Executive Order 13224, freeze any assets INB or Al-Aqsa Television hold under U.S. jurisdiction and prohibit U.S. persons from engaging in any transactions with these parties. Executive Order 13224 targets terrorists, terrorist organizations, persons owned or controlled by or acting for or on behalf of designated terrorists or terrorist organizations, and those providing financial, material, or technological support to designated terrorists or terrorist organizations, or for acts of terrorism.

Even though that is a quote in post no. 31; that should probably read March 17, 2010 for a date on the source line.

“Hamas, Hezbollah Could Push Israel To War”

Mar 4, 2010
By David Eshel
Tel Aviv

SNIPPET: “Israel is always on high alert when it comes to the potential for war with its neighbors, particularly the two groups viewed as proxies of Iran and Syria: Hamas and Hezbollah. Though neither seems particularly eager for a full-blown conflict with Israel at present, defense analysts see a number of developments that could lead to another war with one or both, perhaps as soon as this year.

One reason for this view is that Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon continue to be supplied with ordnance from Iran. Thousands of Hezbollah rockets are poised to strike Israel again, though for almost four years the border between Lebanon and northern Israel has been remarkably quiet. One reason may be that 11,000 soldiers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and 15,000 Lebanese army troops are more effective at keeping Hezbollah’s Shiite militia at bay. The tranquility may be illusory—Tehran and Damascus could encourage Hamas and Hezbollah to attack Israel in furtherance of their regional aims. Iran has also threatened retaliation if Israel attacks its nuclear program; and with popular unrest a constant threat to the leadership in Tehran, a war with Israel, fought through Hamas or Hezbollah, could be one way of diverting Iranian public attention away from the regime.

Other developments are raising tensions as well.”

The Folly of America Training the Palestinian Army
JINSA ^ | March 19, 2010 | JINSA Reports
Posted on March 19, 2010 1:05:43 PM PDT by Ooh-Ah

Fairly authoritative sources have noted that Lt. Gen. Keith Dayton, the U.S. Army general responsible for training Abu Mazen’s Palestinian security force/army, has become increasingly marginalized by the Fatah government. Last summer his staff was reportedly no longer directly involved in training or planning and had been “expelled” from the Palestinian Authority (PA) “Strategic Planning Department.” Then came news that American DynCorp International’s contract for training and mentoring Palestinian forces had not been renewed. Now, another shoe has dropped.

According to Janes’ Defence Weekly as reported by wire services, the PA has drafted a plan to end American training and supervision of the force entirely. “Dayton’s role would be limited to bringing money and equipment for the security forces. He would not deal with PA operations or deployment,” a Palestinian official was reported to have said. “Officials said the PA leadership...determined that U.S. intervention was hampering security force development and undermining the legitimacy of the regime.”

We suspect that Lt. Gen. Dayton would retire rather than be in that position, but that would suit the PA as well. He has already done the job they wanted done. He’s built their army and now they want to use it as they see fit.

We don’t blame the Palestinians.

For years JINSA has pointed out the folly of U.S. military funding and training for the nucleus of a Palestinian army. American military sources with whom we discuss the issue generally give us two oddly linked responses:

A well-trained army would be loyal to the “State,” and; in the meantime,

It would protect the current Fatah regime from the Hamas regime that wants to unseat it in the West Bank as it did in Gaza.

Israelis, too, have told us that since Hamas is essentially at war with Fatah as well as Israel, training Fatah soldiers to fight Hamas means that the IDF doesn’t have to do it. “The more they kill, the fewer we have to kill,” said an IDF officer.

This is a temporary answer at best and a foolish one as well. There is no Palestinian state and if, despite the best efforts of rational actors, one emerges on two sides of Israel, Hamas will be as much a part of it as Fatah, and entitled to some say in the disposition of the army.

The United States arms and trains the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in the belief that the Lebanese state will use the LAF to control Hezbollah and maintain a peaceful border with Israel. A JINSA delegation in Israel recently heard a presentation on Israel’s belief that with Hezbollah officials in the Lebanese government cabinet, the Lebanese government is, in fact, a “state sponsor” of terrorism against Israel. “The state apparatus is the face to the world and brings in aid, including American military aid. Hezbollah is the actual security force of the country and will determine whether there will be peace or war.”

What the Israelis clearly understand about Lebanon should be understood about the Palestinians as well-and understood by the United States in both cases. Giving military skills to young men with no understanding of or control over where they will use those skills is not in the U.S. national security interest-particularly when they fire our general.
