North Koreans fear the country is on the verge of a new famine

North Koreans fear the country is on the verge of a new famine

Jane Macartney, Tumen

Once again, rice has disappeared from tables in North Korea. A famine looms and — as happened in the 1990s — millions could die.

Desperation is stamped on the faces of those few who have braved barbed-wire fences, armed guards and patrols to slip into neighbouring China. They seek food over freedom.

The Times met four women in a safe house in China this week who fled recently across the frontier. They described despair in North Korea at the growing prospect of starvation in the Stalinist state. The youngest, only 16, crossed the frozen river last month. The other three, in their 50s, left last year and were tight-lipped about how they got out because they must go back to help the families they left behind.

While snow falls outside, Choi Kum Ok squats on the floor of an anonymous apartment not far from the border. Her eyes fill with tears as she talks of the son she had to leave behind. “I came over to earn money for his medical care. I need to get him food or he will starve.”

She covers her face and sobs as she remembers the 1990s, when harvests failed and up to 10 per cent of the population starved. She lost a sibling. “I don’t want to talk about it,” she says.

A former security guard and member of the elite ruling Workers' Party, she cannot understand how the leaders that she still worships could have failed their people so completely.

I agree. Lots of information came out of N. Korea in recent years, but they tell only small aspect of the whole story. When the whole thing laid bare to the world in near future, the world would see it in its full scope, including things even few N. Koreans have been aware of. Truly, what we are seeing is the tip of iceberg, IMHO.

Those who insisted on appeasing N. Korea, confident that it is intellectually superior way, would face the real prospect that they would be viewed as accomplice to inhumanity for next 50 years.

I agree. WTF?

Then again, she's probably brainwashed and ignorant of history. Famine has been used very effectively by communists.

Why are democrats/marxists/liberals so dumb they can’t see this?

In a Communist country, the regular people starve, but the elite live like nobility.

A planned economy is most attractive to those with the arrogance to think they will be part of the planning class.

Instead of shipping them food air drop a few hundred thousand small handguns with extra magazines and ammo so at least the North Korean population has a fighting chance to take their country back from the insane ones running it.

That's an excellent suggestion.

yeah that’s true , the elite, the politician democrats believe they will be ok even if the population is starving.

but what i mean is the 100 million registered democrats , the every day idiots who actually believe government works as they are always wanting government solutions to problems created by too much government regulation. I mean they see no government is creating products we can hold in our hand and they don’t wonder why but still trust the idiot politicians and goverment to be able to take care of them, solve problems, produce etc.

that’s why i say democrats/liberals and the media are stupid.

That is true. Every year, the sick and infirm die due to lack of food.

By now you'd think they would have evolved into a new, fuel-efficient species of supermen....

Utterly simplistic ... and incorrect.

I'm sure you enjoy your GPS-based technology, for example. Or jet propelled airplanes. And no doubt you like to use highways and Interstates....

And since government contracts out to "private" industry to the tune of hundreds of billions yearly, there is at best a blurry line between them.

Ditch the ideology, FRiend.

A Nation of Racist Dwarfs

I imagine the former Socialist (who took a lot of heat for his defection) Hitchens is a bit too Globalist for most readers of this site, but he always makes a coherent argument. His argument for the Iraq war was that Hussein was a dictator who should be removed from power so that people could be free, rather than that he was a threat to the U.S.

The fact that these people are so brainwashed shows why any attempt at reunifying with South Korea will be a total disaster for both countries. The people of the North are so accustomed to being taken care of that they would never last five minutes in a capitalist country. And if South Korea has a generous welfare state, taking on everyone in the North will destroy that country.

a good film to see is:
National Geographic - Inside North Korea

These doctors go to north korea to treat the poor
suffering fools for cataract blindness (And train
North Korean Doctors in the simple procedure-takes less than 15 minutes)- the film crew was able to sneek in as
a “ hospital team” -recording the surgeries)- scary country-

How about this- if you do not have a picture of the dear Leader posted correctly- you are Gone!- into the Gulag you go!- the film is a real eye opener.

also- cataract blindness is caused by bad diet-

And these doctors went for FREE- paid for everything!
the trip ,food, medical supplies. They do this as a
humanitarian endeavor.
