According to actor and comedian Drew Carey, Hollywood is not the intolerant blackballing liberal utopia many deem it to be. In fact, Hollywood is very accepting of the right-wing crowd - except for that fringe, radical segment known as conservatives.
"In Hollywood, you can pretty much get away with being a libertarian," Carey told John Stossel on the Fox Business Network. "But if you're a conservative you're kind of doomed."
Carey was a featured guest on "Stossel" March 18, dissecting the economic calamities surrounding his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio (anointed Forbes' new "Most Miserable City"), and to provide the perspective of a fledgling businessman.
"Now you're a libertarian right?" Stossel asked. "Has that slowed your career?"

I loved Drew’s definition of a libetarian: a conservative who still gets high. :-)
Drew Carey is right. a libertarian is a conservative who still gets high. He skipped the part how some libertarians want to legalize prostitution as well.
Reason: I take it you favor drug legalization?
Carey: Yeah. But every time you bring that up, people always ask, "Oh, you think they should sell heroin and crack in stores?" Sure: Smoke crack, die, get out of my way. As long as I don't have to pay for it (laughs).
Pretty much my attitude as well...
“John Voight is leading the conservative cause for Hollywood... “
Yep, and as far as employment, he couldn’t get arrested.
gotta love Drew. But what he says holds true for most liberal areas. I consider myself a “pragmatic” Libertarian, in that I don’t vote third party. It also makes for pleasant relationships with the left. My kids have also made use of this in school, during govt classes. Teachers much more open to dissent from self declared Libertarians lol
Unfortunately they can take years to die and can do enormous amounts of damage in the mean time.
From what I've read of him, I'm confident he would advocate it if asked. Fine with me as well.
I imagine that would all change if they gained any traction nationally.
Quite true, and exactly the same can be said of alcoholics. Of course, we tried outlawing booze, but that didn't work out very well...
The problem is that if your in for a penny your in for a dollar. The way it works in our new society is that you will pay for it, get use to it they won.
While I applaud Voight's principled stand, it's clear that the only reason he get a pass is because he's already established his acting bona fides with his Academy Award win decades ago. Also, he's a supporting actor now, not a leading actor.
Without Voight's credentials (and age), it's impossible for any actor who aspires to lead a film, or a television series, to speak publicly about conservative principles.
The only one that really comes close is Gary Sinese. But, Sinese stays pretty clear of domestic policy issues and I've never heard him say anything political (other than he supports the troops) on a national media show.
I believe he's speaking of the views of the Hollywood crowd; in that respect he's quite right.
HE has fallen for the hook. The leftist media and talking heads spend an inordinate amount of time pretending the conservative and right of center majority of this country don’t really know who they are and thus paint those of us who are conservative as extremists. I am convinced that they actually help us in the end as more people say “wait a minute I agree with that, and that, and that etc...” until more of them come to the realization that they are indeed conservative.
People who identify themselves make up roughly 40% of the population. But, it doesn't mean that they vote that way, or that they really are.
20% of the people who identified themselves as conservatives in 2008, voted for Barack Obama. Do you know any "conservatives" who voted for Barack Obama?
From what I’ve gathered, libertarians are basically socially amoral? If that’s the case. then no wonder they are considered more palatable to Hollywood.
And I ma not just saying that I have always though how great he is as an actor.. As for the other pathetic morons in Hollywood they can be taken care of in the boy cot of their movies..Don't rent or go to a movie a Dem has made or is in..If they don't get our money they will starve..
While I personally advocate legalization of drugs and prostitution, I recognize that as a practical matter neither major party is going to make headway towards doing so (possible exception: marijuana). In any case it's not at the top (or even middle) of my agenda; my most important issues are fiscal responsibility and foreign policy. As such, I vote a straight Republican ticket.
Granted, I have to hold my nose while doing so at times.
I like it....sounds great!
"People who identify themselves as conservative, make up roughly 40% of the population."
On the contrary, I believe libertarians are quite moral, in that they don't want confiscate other people's incomes or tell them how to behave, unlike the left and the right.
YMMV, of course. I frequently see social conservatives prudishly refer to libertarians as "libertines". When describing my own libertarian-leaning views I was recently called (pejoratively, mind you) a "greedy Republican" on this very board. I took it as a compliment.
We can, however, not participate.
I am doing my part by just not going to see any movies these days. I am under no illusion that I am making even a minute (mī-nūt) dent in the revenues of the "stars" and the movie producers since lately they seem to have record sales.
It makes me feel better knowing that not a dollar of my money goes into buying Matt Damon even a quart of gas for his jet or that I am contributing to the "bottom line" of SKG et al.
Most actors are so stupid they think it means liberal.
I haven’t gone to a movie in years. Not because I’m boycotting Hollywood, but rather because I simply don’t like the vast majority of modern movies as compared to the classics. If something comes out that I do like I can simply wait for the DVD and then watch it on a 55” HD screen, so why go to the theater?
Libertarians usually just want government to keep the peace and fix the roads and stay out of everything else.
Considering prostitution is legal in Nevada it would be a matter of legalizing it in the other 49 states.
"Don't vote for my opponent, he wants more hookers!"
A common misconception. Because they created a Federal government with delegated powers doesn't mean that was their view of all government. They had established churches. The laws in the states in the early Republic would be anathema to libertarians. The closest thing to libertarianism at the time was Jacobinism. It was feared and hated. Paine endorsed it, almost paid for it with his head and was shunned by nearly everyone as a result of his ideology.
Prostitution is NOT Legal in Clark County, where Las Vegas is located.
Drew was also promoting Obama before the election.
I'm not a Libertarian as such, but I certainly lean that way on social issues. I don't want to just balance the federal budget, I want to reduce it enormously, while at the same time maintaining a strong defense. In this respect I differ from a doctrinaire Libertarian.
As for legalizing drugs, prostitution, and homosexuality...it's none of my business how people conduct their lives as long as they don't harm others.
And who cares about the stench of the Hollywood commies?
Conservatives as well, given the legal status of women and blacks at the time.
Another actor who doesn’t hesitate to speak out is James Woods.
James Woods, interesting man. He should run for public office.
Quotes:
Scratch a liberal and youll find a fascist ... Im not joking. You look at whats happening in this country now. Catharine MacKinnon thinks that we should now limit free speech, anything that offends a woman should now no longer be allowed - no reasonable man or woman in this country would subscribe to that, its just insanity. (1994)
But, you know, feminists have just destroyed the world as we, know it. I havent met a woman lately, and Im talking about women who work and have a high position, who doesnt agree with that. It has just destroyed relationships between men and women. Men and women are very wary of each other now. I listen to these feminists rave about, How dare they attack Bill Clinton for having a little consensual sex act, but went nuts because Clarence Thomas allegedly made a joke about a Coke can. And the other guy is humiliating his wife and getting oral sex while hes talking about Bosnia to a congressman. Hello? Barbara Boxer is, you know, the most worthless, hypocritical feminist loser on the face of the earth .... I just loathe with every fiber of my being, liars. My second ex-wife was a liar. And Nixon was a liar. And this Clinton is a liar. I have no respect for him no matter what in the world he ever does.
My nightmare in life, my absolute fundamental, overwhelming, egregious nightmare, is Bill Gates vision of the future, where there will be a video camera on every corner and every conversation will be recorded. Man, Id rather put a pitchfork in my eyes than live in a world like that.

I wouldn’t conflate the legal status of women with that of slaves in the colonies. There were good reasons for woman at the time to be treated differently under law. Men and women supported that disparity. There was no justification for slavery.
I actually thought about Woods, but then I remembered this...Woods stared in a show a couple years ago called "Shark". It debuted during the strike-shortened season, but had good ratings. When it came back, it still had good ratings for CBS and handily beat its competition (in fact, it had better ratings than any other drama on NBC at the time). And yet, when it came time to renew it for its third season, it was canceled.
You have to ask yourself, "Why would CBS cancel a successful show?"
I consider myself a small l libertarian. I believe that what I do is no ones business but my own, as long as i do not infringe upon anyone else’s civil rights or liberties....no knock raids into the wrong home, resulting in the death of little old ladies sitting in their living rooms is a direct result of the war on drugs, and a violation of civil liberties on so many fronts it cannot be documented here...this little old lady ( in atlanta, this was a big story last year ) was denied her right to LIVE because of a bad warrant and no knock raids.....police are setting up sting operations for the sole purpose of entrapping, arresting and confiscating property of people soliciting services of prostitutes....I do not do drugs or use prostitutes, but I am amazed that this is allowed to happen in the USA, and it is all a direct violation of our constitution.
it’s only legal in certain counties. It’s not legal in Las Vegas county.
I think the reason most leftist don’t get mad at Libertarians is that the left/liberals are as dumb as rocks and they think a Libertarian is a Liberal because they both start with LIBER.
Not in my experience. The above is not an accurate description of liberals either. The big issues for liberals are government run healthcare, government run education system, destruction of the free-market and support for terrorists because all their ideas are based on racial identity instead of morals.
On all these libertarians are with conservatives.
The issues you have described are not issues that will have a major impact on society except for the homosexuals foisting themselves on us through government programs and schools. I have to concede the libertarian claim that getting rid of government programs and government schools will get rid of the menace of homosexuals foisting themselves on others.
The other huge item for liberals is that they are anti-America. Not so with libertarians.
I'm not sure it had such good ratings in the second season. CBS kept moving it around. It ended up on Sunday night, but I could never DVR it because during football season, the starting time of TV shows varies because football games tend to run over. I must have missed half of the second and last season.
If it did get good ratings, it may have been canceled because it may have appealed to the wrong demographic (people over 30). Networks tend to target young consumers now. CBS canceled Dr. Quinn for that reason.
But prostitution IS legal.
We call it “Congress”.
In fact, it looks like we’re paying through the nose for them to screw every single American as we speak. . .
They say we have no caste system. /sarc
While I'm not comparing the two directly, I find it hard to find a "good reason" to not allow women to vote or the right to own property once married.
Just as you say, there are negative consequence to legalizing prostitution, drugs, etc. The same could certainly be said of alcohol. Would you bring back prohibition?
