Catholic Bishops’ Plea to Congress: Do Not Pass Pro-abortion Health Care Bill
CNA via CDS ^ | 3/20/2010 | CNA

In a final, urgent plea to prevent the passage of the current form of the Senate health care bill, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) on Saturday evening sent a letter to Congressmen asking them to vote “no.”

“For decades,” the letter says, “the United States Catholic bishops have supported universal health care. The Catholic Church teaches that health care is a basic human right, essential for human life and dignity.”

God bless these Catholic Bishops for the courage and moral conviction they are showing. They are doing God's work in the world.

They just passed it. Where are the Protestants denominations, Moromons, Evangelicals? Oh Joel Osteen is on his jet. Rick Warren is working with the Muslims.

Some of teh Bishops are good, some are liberal and too much of the flock will go along with Stupak.

Bless them? They'd love this bill if only it didn't pay for abortions (now Obama promises it won't) and allows you to act according to your own conscience. What courage!

Unfortunately, these cowards have been mum on your going to jail if you fail to sign on, on the unprecedented increase of statism, and on the promise of euthenasia that is implicit not only in Dr. Emanuel's "Complete Lives System" but in any nation with socialized medicine on the planet.

Bless them with a reality check and backbone.

Good for them, but we are in this mess in part because of their push for socialized medicine. I don’t think they truly get it, socialized medicine mandates the murder of the weak, the elderly, and the infirm. They live in a dream world.

I’d give odds that there is money in this bill for Catholic Charities.

Thanks for your positive comments. I have to give the bishops their credit too. They have been against the obamacare bill because of the abortion funding, no conscience clause protection, etc. all along.

It appears, however, that they should have fought much harder. An old saying — “The walls of hell are lined with the skulls of Bishops.” It’s credited to several saints.

I say with all humility... it's about time! Where were you when your congregations were pleading with you to stop passively supporting Obama and the Dems in their ascent to power? We are in this mess because you failed to listen to our warnings.

But no... you want universal healthcare. Just a note, USCCB, the part of the Catechism that speaks of health care as a right... has a footnote pointing to Rerum Novarum... a very strong encyclical against the evils of Socialism. Just as our 2nd Amendment doesn't mean the government must buy me a gun, neither does a right to health care mean that our doctors must become government agents.

“God bless these Catholic Bishops for the courage and moral conviction they are showing.”

Yeah, well I have a major problem with “healthcare is a universal right” wording. Supporting communist principles with the teeny exception of “except funding for abortions” means to me they are quite content to support the rest of the DemonRATs agenda.

If Catholics didn't have their heads up their A$$ and help vote these POS bastards into office, we wouldn't be discussing the total enslavement of America that was just accomplished.

We have just witnessed the passing of the biggest bunch of lies gathered together in one piece of legislation in history. The DemonRATs have already bankrupted our country prior to this vote. This will ensure it is finished off. Oh, before you pile on, I am a Catholic, so have at it.

Catholics, including the bishops, have no clue about Catholic history. About how Catholics suffered at the hands of Islam. About how Catholics MULTIPLE TIMES saved Europe from becoming Islamic.

Stupak the fake Catholic sold out to a muslim. Fool. The Bishops are only marginally better and many in their (liberals) flock are idiots.

So are these Bishops really willing to do the RIGHT and APPROPRIATE thing and formally EXCOMMUNICATE each and every Representative that voted YES on this bill???

I’m not holding my breath!!! It’s hard to do the RIGHT thing when you really have to DO SOMETHING -— especially when it might offend someone.

Well, with the passage of it, we'll see exactly where the Bishops stand. Will they tell Catholics that they can resist, on the basis of morality, the requirements of the bill? Will they stand with Catholics who decide, on their own, to do so?

Will there be any effect in the Congressmen and women who ignored what the Bishops said, and voted for it anyway?

I think the USCCB is going to have to do some tall soul-searching to find out why many Catholics don't even pay attention to them, anymore. Catholic Advocate asked a few weeks ago if we needed a Catholic Tea Party. Inasmuch as that entails faithful Catholics writing to their Bishops asking for their Pastoral leaders to actually take some hard stands, I'm all for it. They DO need to hear from us, letting them know exactly what Catholics in the pews think of their pronouncements on various issues.

“For decades,” the letter says, “the United States Catholic bishops have supported universal health care. The Catholic Church teaches that health care is a basic human right, essential for human life and dignity.”

Just curious -- how many nations that DO have universal health care exclude elective abortions from their system?
