Mixed-gender dorm rooms are gaining acceptance

They weren't looking to make a political statement or to be pioneers of gender liberation. Each just wanted a familiar, decent roommate rather than a stranger after their original roommates left to study abroad.

That's how Pitzer College sophomores Kayla Eland, female, and Lindon Pronto, male, began sharing a room this semester on Holden Hall's second floor. They are not a couple and neither is gay. They are just compatible roommates in a new, sometimes controversial, dormitory option known as gender-neutral housing that is gaining support at some colleges in California and across the nation....

Nothing new. I roomed with a two girls in college in a house of 8 people.

Completely Platonic.

Of course, when I came back early for Christmas break and there was one girl (and no one else), we killed a bottle of something and had sex for three or four days and would occassionally repeat, even though we each had respective significant others.

But it was Platonic most of the time.

Ah, college.

Sure. That's what they tell their parents. And every college town has a bar called "The Library".

My alma mater has mixed gender floors now - women in one room, men in another, etc. But I don't think anyone officially lives in the same room (unofficially, well...) When I was in school back in the 90's, we weren't technically even allowed to have female guests past midnight. Not that we followed those rules.

Btw, just as an aside: it's been my experience that the folks who run dorms are some of the most humorless, uptight individuals I've ever had the displeasure to meet.

Any one want to bet that sometime in the fall semester there will be a little, Conquetta Unique or Rod’terrious Armoni (last name you pick it)

The names above are from my extensive “list of amazing names”.

When I went to college if my girlfriend and I wanted to get together we had to actually walk down a hall up hill both ways through snow. Now people can just go across the room.

I lived in a co-ed dorm for 3 years. The rooms were staggered...male, female, male, female, etc.

For the most part, the relationships where often similar to a sibling relationship—not what I had expected when I moved in. Of course there was some hanky-panky but not as much as you’d expect.

Of course, that was much different than having us actually share a room.

‘”If we are going into a post-gender world, then the regulation of private behavior is just not practical,” he said.’

This is the goal-no gender. What should be is a joy in whichever gender God has given you the body to work in during the first phase of your existence. Also, a respect for the opposite gender and an absolute protection of the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman, the representation of our devotion and relationship with our One-True-God.
