If someone were looking to purchase a revolver (.357 or .41 Mag) or a semi (9mm or 45) what would you recommend? Budget < $700.00.
Oh wait, I forgot to mention that all my firearms were stolen last night in a late night raid by maurading jackalopes. Poop happens.
My advice is to go to a local shooting range that rents handguns and try out a variety of them.
There are a lot of variables. What is the use of the gun, how much time are you willing to spend practicing, etc.
Heck, you might even be able to find a gun that suits your needs and tickles your fancy and have enough left over for a bunch of ammo.
I wish I had an extra 700 bucks to buy another gun.

Maybe he can find one that’s beat up a little? I may be wrong, but I thought $700 should buy a fairly decent 1911.

Not a new one. The least expensive I’ve seen was between $900 to $1100, and with current events in this country, that may be old news.
for personal carry, I recommend the Bersa Thunder 9mm. It’s smooth and efficient. I bought mine used (1 yr old) from a local gun store last year for $350. Kickback is minimal and easy to use. I have another one from Kahr, it’s also a 9mm and a nice carry weapon. The Kahr is lighter than my Bersa, but has more kick to it.
I have a Taurus .357 magnum 7-shot revolver that I dearly love and my wife shoots very well, too. Also, you can practice with .38 special rounds, which will save you money at the range.

If it is for defense/carry, something which you can manage recoil-wise is the most important. If it makes you flinch, and you can’t hit your target, it won’t do you much good.
For defense, I prefer double-action revolvers. If a round doesn’t fire, you go onto the next. With a semi-auto, you have to manually re-chamber the round.
Keep an eye out for used guns too. People find incredible deals on them from time to time, especially with people being hard for $$ these days.

Single stack, very concealable and Sig makes weapons of the highest quality.
U.S. Navy Seals carry the Sig 226. but that’s a little bulky for carry purposes.
Just my 2 cents.
I still think it’s funny that Glocks stovepipe and Hi Points don’t. LOL
BTW - I have the same gun, but when I wanted to add the .40 to my collection I couldn’t get one because they’re not “approved” for sale in Kaliforny. I called Hi Point and they told me Kaliforny is crazy and it wasn’t worth their trouble trying to get it approved. You can only get the 9mm and .380 here.
