Updated: 4:55 p.m. U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello’s brother received a threatening letter in the mail on the same day that someone apparently severed a gas line at the home in Ivy.

Two conservative Tea Party activists posted the address of the home on the Internet on Monday, mistakenly believing it was the home of the congressman. One of the activists urged others to “drop by” and “express their thanks” for Perriello’s vote in favor of health care reform.

Tuesday evening, Perriello’s brother’s family smelled gas and discovered the propane line of a gas-powered grill on their screened-in porch had been slashed.

So, the “severed gas line” was in fact the feeder hose from a propane canister inside an enclosed porch, not a natural gas pipeline as the media has been leading one to believe with their over hype.

Does propane have an odor?

It does, but not nearly as strong as natural gas. If it was a 30 lb. gas grill canister, I'm guessing it would have all leaked out within 10 minutes or so, depending on how full the tank was.

#1. you were next going to club the owner over the head with the empty tank,

#2....or stand in the bushes and laugh hysterically as he has to go somewhere and purchase a fresh tank with his wife screaming at him loud enough for the neighbors to hear that he's "holding up dinner", and "I thought you said you checked the tank!!".

No, but one is added so that you know if you have a leak. A propane leak is more dangerous than natural gas too due to the high pressure and wider combustible range.

My Aunt had the same thing happen with her old gas grill and worried kids had come into her backyard and done it.

Unscrewing it from the canister would not release the gas. Unscrewing it from the fitting to the burners would require time and a wrench. Slashing the feeder hose with a razor knife and turning on the canister valve would release the gas.

I bet it was a set up.
