Cambridge will turn off all nonessential lights in municipal buildings for one hour Saturday, starting at 8:30 p.m., in support of Earth Hour.

Turning out the lights for Earth Hour is intended to serve as a call for action on climate change and to symbolize a positive impact can be made by working together.

The city will turn out non-essential lights for one hour, and residents are encouraged to do the same Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

This year is the third year of the Earth Hour event which attracted more than 80 million participants in the U.S. last year, and nearly a billion people around the world, as lights dimmed on such global icons as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Sydney’s Opera House, the Great Pyramids of Giza and New York’s Empire State Building.

“I’m a-gonna turn every light in the house on, just to do my part to make up for it!”

I was just going to suggest that. I will do the same.

Instead of trying to push us back into the dark ages, literally and figuratively,— by cutting energy, thereby cutting industry and progress, — they should make use of the clean, cheap, infinite nuclear energy.

1. How much do you want to bet that because Cambridge has a population of 100,000, they score that as 100,000 participants?
2. What’s the big deal about turning the ‘non-essential’ lights off in administrative buildings on a Saturday night? Don’t they do that anyway? If not, why the hell not?
3. They turned the lights off on the pyramid of Giza? Who knew the ancient Egyptians had electrical lights?

My Christmas lights are still out. I’m going to turn them on.

I’m such a spoilsport.

We're going to get about 200 of us together, stand outside and empty aerosol hairspray cans into the air for an hour.

(Just kidding...sounds like fun, though.)

How stupid for these sprout heads to schedule a power-down during the Kentucky-West Virginia Sweet 16 match.

In all honesty, think this is a noble program. Note that the root of “conservation” is “conservative.” I get the urge to show the Green-O-palians by blazing all your lights and leaving your SUVs idling in the driveway, but exactly who are you really going to show up by doing this? Who else is going to notice or give a flying fart? It’s your own power bill thats gonna be higher.

I’m no fan of the religion of Eco-Fascism. And it’s a shame that their lies and extremism justifiably breeds such contempt from common sense people. But many of the actions described here are either abject chest-beating or outright capitalist masochism.

I’m turning on every light inside and outside. And I might burn some old tires in the driveway.

Why don’t they do it later in the evening so that people can then appreciate the stars?

Speaking of farting - there’s another idea. Eat plenty of beef and beans and let it rip!

My generator needs a test run. I suppose tomorrow night at 8 pm for 90 minutes should be about right. I’ll hjave to load it with all my auxiliary lighting, though, to ensure it is working too.

I’ll be driving home from work then. I’ll do my part: by driving with my headlights off!
