Mobile, Alabama Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Civil Rights Charges Related to Desecration of Synagogue

WASHINGTON—Christian Rodney Ice, 19, of Mobile, Ala., pleaded guilty today in federal court in Mobile to one count of violating the Church Arson Act by placing threatening graffiti and neo-Nazi markings on a synagogue in Mobile, the Justice Department and the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of Alabama announced. Sentencing has been scheduled for Sept. 23, 2010. Ice faces a maximum prison sentence of one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

During the plea proceedings and in documents filed in court, Ice admitted that during the late night and early morning hours of Jan. 3-4, 2009, he and an associate used spray paint to place anti-Semitic graffiti and neo-Nazi markings on the Congregation Tree of Life Messianic Synagogue in Mobile. The graffiti and markings included the German words “Juden Raus” (“Jews Out”), and the statement “Hitler was right.”

“Threats against religious institutions and their members will not be tolerated in this country,” said Thomas E. Perez, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. “This case should send a clear message to others who would carry out similar criminal acts that they will be brought to justice and held accountable for their actions.”

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to use all the tools at its disposal to stamp out hate crimes and instances of bigotry,” said Kenyen R. Brown, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama.

The case was investigated by special agents from the Mobile Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the City of Mobile Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney George May of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama and Trial Attorney Donald Tunnage of the Civil Rights Division.

There’s been a lot of church’s being set on fire in the past few years, I wonder if this guy belonged to a group that would lead somewhere.

MOBILE, Ala. — A Mobile man has been indicted on federal charges accusing him of desecrating a local Messianic Jewish house of worship.

Christian Rodney Ice faces charges of conspiracy to violate the rights of individuals to hold property because of race and damaging religious property. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison on the most serious charge.

Ice could not be reached for comment.

Mobile police in January of last year arrested another man, Thomas Hayward Lewis, in connection with the incident at Congregation Tree of Life Messianic Synagogue in west Mobile. He has a tentative trial date set for May in Mobile County Circuit Court.

The federal indictment does not name Lewis as a defendant but refers to an alleged co-conspirator by the initials T.L.

“Because he hasn’t been indicted doesn’t mean he won’t be in the future,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney George May.

According to the indictment, Ice and the other man drove from downtown Mobile to the Congregation Tree of Life address on Jan. 3, 2009. Ice then allegedly spray-painted the exterior walls with anti-Semitic rants, swastikas and graffiti.

Congregation members consider themselves Jewish but also accept Jesus Christ as the Messiah.

May said that the case is unusual for southwest Alabama.

“Fortunately, we do not see a lot of that,” he said.

It sounds odd enough that the obvious, assumed motive might not be the actual one. There’s apparently some speculation that he’s a disgruntled Messianic himself.

I'll bet the members of that synagogue would dispute your statement.

A. It's not a synagogue (regardless of what those poor souls call it).
B. Jews and Christians alike realize "messianic judaism" is a form of *Christianity*.
C. Even Reform and Reconstructionist Jews don't accept "messianic judaism."

Bottom line: If you're hangin'with the J-man, youse ain't a Jew, you're a Christian!
