Top insurance exec: Your health premiums will go up, coverage will change under Obamacare
Washington Examiner ^ | March 29, 2010 | Byron York

Many, many times during the health care debate, President Obama promised the American people that if they have insurance and they are happy with it, then it would not change under the Democrats' national health care proposal. "Under the plan, if you like your current health insurance, nothing changes, except your costs will go down by as much as $2,500 per year," Obama promised on his transition website before assuming office. Once in the White House, he repeated that promise over and over and over.

You didn't really believe that, did you? Good. To confirm your suspicions, read the new BusinessWeek interview with Ron Williams, the chairman and CEO of Aetna Insurance, which covers more than 36 million Americans:

Will insurance premiums go up?

The answer is yes, and some of the things that will drive those premiums are significant additional taxes the industry will ultimately have to pay in the first year.

The President said that this bill would not have any impact on people who already had coverage, that it was about the uninsured, that there would be no change. Will this legislation change the coverage of people who are already paying for it?

My perception is, yes, things will change. You might not have a plan that includes the exact same doctors. You might have plans that have richer benefits, and therefore you're going to pay more for benefits you may or may not want. It would have been a better message to say, we're going to make certain you maintain your eligibility.

Everywhere in the liberal media there are articles now, stating you will not be able to find a doctor, that employers will be dropping your health coverage.

Repeal is so important.

Think about this, too folks - Government mandates oligopoly for a few big-time insurance companies + government mandated captive consumer base for those companies = higher premiums and no recourse to do a thing about it.

Except repealing the blankety-blank law, and enacting conservative measures like cross-state line buyer options and tort reform, that is.

Yes, finding a doctor when you need one is going to be difficult. maybe a personal crisis. Like Rahm said though, a crisis is a terrible thing to waste. So what’s next? To fix the no Dr. crises we need the government to take over all med schools. I was going to say take over the AMA but they have already.

Many small insurance companies will have serious trouble. But the big insurance companies are likely to do very well.

We heard little from the insurance industry prior to passage of the bill, now that it's a done deal, we may hear grousing from insurance executives. But the bottom line in that the government and the big insurance companies have done each other a huge favor here.

That's how economic fascism works.

What the corrupt government don't realize, is the private sector is broke...No more money...They are not government that can simply just print more money...

They can raise all the taxes and charge more for everything....It don't matter...The private sector is basically broke.

Good luck with the unions trying to get their employers to keep their insurance premiums low.

Exactly. Marxism and Fascist Corporatism are two shades of the same red.

To fix the no Dr. crises we need the government to take over all med schools.

That is in the bill in one of the most heinous ways. The bill requires that med/nursing schools and hospitals employ/educate people that reflect the "demographics of the local population and clientele". It's reparations disguised as affirmative action.

It requires these institutions to racially profile.

I believed Obama even less than a sensible person believes Tiger Woods’ promises to his wife, “forsaking all others, until death...” Anyone who is shocked that Obama lied on this is too stupid to be allowed out of a padded room.

To fix the no Dr. crises we need the government to take over all med schools.

That's been the idea all along. This bill is tailor-made to create a number of "crises" which will then need to be "solved" by further government intrusion into this already intruded sector of our economy. It's just a big step in a path already being followed. Why else do you think the government had already thrown up such impediments to real reform (such as opening up competition by allowing us to buy across state lines) that we were brought to the present insurance regime? To create the "need" to fix the "broken" insurance system with its costs and whatnot. Make the problem worse, and you increase the calls for a "public option." Make doctors scarcer, and you can justify rationing, as well as federalising the education system even further.

These people NEVER do anything without a plan for increasing their own power years down the road.

That's why they always seem to win, while short-sighted conservatives who refuse to vote so as to "send a message" always seem to lose.

I’m with TN Rural Health which offers Blue Cross in a Co-Op plan

483/month for my family of 7 including my early 20s daughters

80/20

15 co-pay

1000/per person deduct for drug plan, you pay and submit...only I hit this mark

no dental

We got a note that our premium will go up estimated 43% to cover the no preexisting clause and then could go up another 150% to cover everything...they simply do not know yet

the goal is to kill private insurance

just like my company, they wanted the hundreds of thousands of new members. My company (a local HMO in Los Angeles ) was on board with Obamacare from the very beginning.

Sickening, just sickening.

“..and no recourse to do a thing about it.”

I think that’s the plan. They’ll demagogue the insurance comapnies, thereby paving the way for single payer.

And by that point, the people will welcome it.

This is how they operate. They set things up in such a way that the people beg for the next step.

Hayek had it nailed.
