Iowa Town Renames Good Friday To "Spring Holiday"

One week before the most solemn day in the Christian year, the city of Davenport, Iowa removed Good Friday from its municipal calendar, setting off a storm of complaints from Christians and union members whose contracts give them that day off. Taking a recommendation by the Davenport Civil Rights Commission to change the holiday's name to something more ecumenical, City Administrator Craig Malin sent a memo to municipal employees announcing Good Friday would officially be known as "Spring Holiday."

If they didn't, or they don't, the Pope better ''visit'' them!

What good is havin' a German Pope if this is allowed?

The same crowd who insist on calling Christmastime “the holidays” while denying it’s because they don’t want to say “Christ...”.

They changed it to "something more ecumentical".

It's GOOD FRIDAY! It commemorates the day our Lord and Savior was crucified. How can anyone get something ecumentical out of that? It's completely nuts!

Let’s rename the Jewish holidays something secular too. Let’s call Passover “Flat Bread Day” and Purim “Whew That was a Close One.”

If you can't recognize the day for what it is, you can't have it off.

Heck, let's see City Hall open on Sundays now.

Why is it that we look to Iowa when picking our candidates for the general election?

They only reason that it is a holiday is because it’s Good Friday. Otherwise, no reason to take it off.

I guess it depends on what the rating scale is. ;-)

I heard they changed it back to Good Friday.

Yeah, after Fox News and the blogosphere got done beating them up the little bureau-Nazi did a 180 and reversed himself.

I’m sure this will not be the last time it is tried though.

The Demoines Register quotes the City Administrator as saying that the e-mail changing the name was sent out "by mistake".

Doncha just hate it when characters on your computer's word processing software self organize into complex sentences and send themselves out to employee service lists.

The ONLY event in all of human history that matters happened on Good Friday. The world tells us what year it is based on that event. I can live because He died, He rose and He lives.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

“Spring Holiday.”

Wouldn’t that favor a Wiccan holiday or Mother Earth or something like that?

Unless you have a specific and defensible critique, I would humbly suggest that New Hampshire can stand quite well on its own merits.

We have no sales or income tax. Our gun laws are extremely pro-2nd Amendment. Our legislators are citizens with real day jobs, who get paid $100 a year for their public service. Our governor serves a two-year term and has little real power. We have mountains, an ocean, numerous glacial lakes and beautiful pristine forests. Our quality of life is consistently rated in the top 5 among all states, our schools are likewise highly-rated and our unemployment rate is far below the national average. Now if we could only figure out a way to keep the leftist moonbats from Vermont, Maine, and Massachusetts out of here, it would be damned near perfect.

So when they have spring floods, and they always do. Who are they going to call? Someone who can rebuke the wind or calm the sea and walk on the water, or Obozo and FEMA. Everyone in Davenport Iowa have a Happy Easter.
