The arrests of members of a Michigan-based "Christian" militia group should convince doubters that there is good reason to worry about right-wing, anti-government extremism -- and potential violence -- in the Age of Obama.
I put the word Christian in quotes because anyone who plots to assassinate law enforcement officers, as a federal indictment alleges members of the Hutaree militia did, is no follower of Christ. According to federal prosecutors, the Hutaree -- the word's not in my dictionary, but their Web site claims it means "Christian warrior" -- are convinced that their enemies include "state and local law enforcement, who are deemed 'foot soldiers' of the federal government, federal law enforcement agencies and employees, participants in the 'New World Order,' and anyone who does not share in the Hutaree's beliefs."
According to the indictment, the group had been plotting for two years to assassinate federal, state or local police officers. "Possible such acts which were discussed," the indictment says, "included killing a member of law enforcement after a traffic stop, killing a member of law enforcement and his or her family at home, ambushing a member of law enforcement in rural communities, luring a member of law enforcement with a false 911 emergency call and then killing him or her, and killing a member of law enforcement and then attacking the funeral procession motorcade" with homemade bombs.
Nine members of the Hutaree were named in the indictment. Eight were arrested during weekend FBI raids in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana; one suspect remains at large. The group's Web site shows members in camouflage outfits traipsing through woods in "training" exercises. They could be out for an afternoon of paintball, except for the loony rhetoric about "sword and flame" and the page, labeled "Gear," that links to several gun dealers.(continued)

Wait a minute. I’m confused. The author referneces the “Age of Obama” and says the alleged Christian militia group has been plotting for two years. The problem with that is Obama had not even been elected two years ago.
Eugene Robinson paints with too broad a brush. Many of the ultra far right are legitimate or playing militia and are harmless, beer drinking dolts. Further their actions and speech are protected under the constitution.
On the other hand their are racist skinheads and real wackadoos that inhabit the ultra-fringe. And they hide under the banner of the flag. I’m not sure where to draw the line, but like the anarchist who killed people in Seattle or the Earth First wackadoos, these ultra fringe groups need to be watched and monitored (subject to the boundaries of the Constitution). They are enemies within.
Gene - how about the Black Panthers chasing away white vote counters with bludgeons in the 2008 election - and Eric Holder decides not to prosecute? How about hate and violence on the left you very cheap hypocrite. Is it okay for the Black Panthers to intimidate people with sticks? Holder and Obama think it is OK.
Even Christopher Hitchens smacked him this morning for talking about domestic terrorism without even mentioning the Jihadists. Hitchens laughed off these Christian militia nuts as no real threat.

Sandra Bernhard issued a blistering warning to Sarah Palin during a performance of her new one-woman show.
The Republican V.P. nom would be "gang-raped by my big black brothers" if she enters Manhattan, Bernhard said. Palin is said to be making a campaign stop in New York next week.
"[The gang rape comment] is part of a much larger, nuanced, and yes, provocative (that's what I do) piece from my show about racism, freedom, women's rights and the extreme views of Governor Sarah Palin, a woman who doesn't believe that other women should have the right to choose," Bernhard told the Daily News today.
What is it they fear? The truth about Obamacare? The fact the American people are rising up in the face of overbearing government and job destroying tax burdens? Do they fear that the American people now see through their lies?
