Democrats Accused of Trying to 'Intimidate' Firms for Airing Health Care Concerns

The CEOs of some of the country's biggest companies are being summoned to Washington to defend claims that the health care reform law would cost them millions -- a move Republicans say amounts to intimidation.

Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, on Friday fired off letters to the heads of Caterpillar, Verizon, AT&T and Deere after they and other firms reported that the health care overhaul would dig deep into their bottom lines.

Caterpillar claimed it would raise costs by $100 million in the first year and imperil coverage for its 150,000 employees and retirees. Deere estimated it would raise expenses by $150 million.

Waxman, in his letters, called these estimates a "matter of concern" and said they "appear to conflict with independent analyses" showing the law would lead to a decrease in premium costs for large companies.

Look, Waxboy should just send his goons to the CEO’s business with the bribes (offer they can’t refuse). Why go through the farce of lecturing them?

I think that basically, it comes down to “not letting a good crisis go to waste.”

Waxman better watch his @$$. If one of these guys is really sharp and can make his case that the accounting rules that the Congress passed requires this, he could embarrass Waxman terribly. Assuming Waxman is capable of feeling embarrassed.

Merely by definition, a Democrat is incapable of intimidating anyone. Look for them - they are the ones creating the mob mentality to get what they want only to scurry like mice when they do not get what they want.

They were not trying to air healthcare concerns. They were simply complying with the law which requires them to restate earnings when retiree benefits face material impact. But the first thing out of Henry Waxman’s mouth is “Are you or have you ever been a member of the Republican Party?”

Even the Healthcare Bill itself requires companies to post any changes 60 days prior.

The companies are required by SEC regs to report the truth, and their books have been fine combed by tons of CPAs and attorneys. Waxman’s staffers have no expertise that will ensnare these CEOs... I predict in a few more days Waxman will quietly drop the hearings.... not because he wants to, but because this is a fight the RATS cannot win.

I’d like to see a picture of Waxman and Himmler side by side.

These corporate CEOs need to tell congress the way it is and lay it on the line. Ollie North flat out embarrassed congress when he testified many years ago. If these CEOs can’t do the same thing, they shouldn’t be in charge of any company much less these multi billion dollar corporations. They need to grow some balls.

It’s just another “crisis” by which the left can further demonize capitalism. The press will eat it up, as if on queue. A few threats might be made in the backrooms. No telling what barama and emmanuel have on those guys.

Isn’t it ironic that the lefties always shout ‘McCarthyism’ at every opportunity?

The companies need to come together and tell Waxman to stick it where the sun don’t shine.

search for "Howard Hughes Senate" for a model to go by.
