Matt Smith, the actor playing the new Doctor, was stopped at Heathrow airport because he was carrying a sonic screwdriver.

Officials took the 'Doctor Who' gadget for a weapon when a security scanner revealed what was in Smith's luggage, according to The Sun.

...

"But going through the X-ray scanner, it probably looks like a weapon, albeit something you'd see in ‘Star Wars.’

I guess his TARDIS was broken....

Lots of jokes in here about it.

The TSA folks in the U.K. must only watch Big Brother if they don’t know what Dr. Who is.

Hmm... Perhaps this is a stunt to create interest in DW in the US, since its new season is about to start on BBC America in April.

Why would an actor be carrying around a special effects prop when a series isn’t filming?

Fair point. My guess is that he’s already sufficiently recognizable to big fans of the show that he’s asked to pose for pictures, somewhat “in character,” hence the prop.

Matt Smith and the previous actor where both big fans of the show from what I understand. That and psoing for pics with crazed fans, LOL. Dr. Who is also a cultural phenomenon over in the U.K. as well.

My suggestion to Matt Smith would be to study the 4th Doctor story “Nightmare of Eden” on how to reply to customs agents. After being asked repeatably his name and date of birth, Tom Baker's Doctor replies “I'm called the Doctor, date of birth, sometime soon I would think.” (He sould also learn to carry an ample supply of Jelly Babies, too...)

The 5th season of DW starts on 3APR2010. It should be posted on YouTube by the end of the day in America.

Good one. Made me laugh.

Speaking of shoddy storage at the BBC, did you know that we almost lost all of the Monty Python episodes because the BBC wanted to reuse the tapes they were recorded on? Unbelievable.

What are they talking about? A sonic screwdriver is a weapon. In the wrong hands that thing could have taken the entire airliner apart from the inside.

11 actors have played the part on TV alone. None of them are false. Nor was Baker necessarily the best.

Now, how is the following description NOT reminiscent of a "liberal progressive":
The resulting creatures are a powerful race bent on universal conquest and domination, utterly without pity, compassion or remorse. Various storylines portray them as having had every emotion removed except hate, leaving them with a desire to purge the Universe of all non-Dalek life. Occasionally they are shown as experiencing other emotions, including fear, although such occurrences are rare.

To: Jack Hydrazine; All

I just watched the first episode here in the UK! Woo hoo!

All first episodes with a new dr are a bit wonky - they have to fit all the new dr stuff into a regular episode. Tonights monster wasnt up to much, although there were some interesting aspects. I didnt think much of the new theme, but I did rate the new companion...amy pond is HOT. The new Tardis interior is pretty cool too...its ENORMOUS (twice as big as the old one). All in all, it looks promising :)
