A 10-year-old boy was killed Thursday after he was struck by a bus at Disney World, MyFoxOrlando.com reported.
The boy was riding his bike with an 11-year-old female friend near the park's Fort Wilderness Resort shortly before 2 p.m when he was hit by the Disney-operated bus carrying 28 people, Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes told Fox News. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The boy was not immediately identified, but authorities said he was from Florida.

Florida has an odd law preventing bike riders from using the sidewalks. This was in play here.
How utterly horrible for all involved. Prayers out.
..third in last six months involving buses. Maybe they should look into the operators of the buses. ???
10 and 11 year old’s out at 2AM ???????? Sorry to hear of this, but where are the parents?
I’ll be interested to hear what happened.....those buses drive very slow and carefully.....did the boy drive out from the side?...what actually happened. Some of the guests at theme parks are totally out of control
If they are going to require bike riders to ride in the street, they should be also giving them a lane for safety’s sake. College towns all over the US have bike lanes for the same reason.
They have all that pork money for road construction, why not make it useful?
you misread. it was at 2 pm.
It was 2pm..but your right, why wasn’t this child at school. Now I know every school district is different but I’ve always known kids to get out of school at 3..at least thats the way it is around here and I live near an elementary school
Why is this being posted?
Sad, sad, sad.
Here in NYC, kids are on break this week.
Ummm, Spring Break?
DISNEY WORLD. Kids usually are not in school when they are at DISNEY WORLD.
What are you, thread monitor?
Lot's of kids are out of school this week.
Before we try and point fingers and assign blame, can't we just accept that sometimes terrible accidents happen?
Sorry, this is just an excuse for bicyclists who want to ‘be true to the sport’......mostly, they are a nuisance on heavily traveled roadways in my opinion....I had to dodge one this AM on a 50K car/day road....utter audacity. It’s either ‘in-your-face defiance’ or it’s just plain lazy ass because they have to go up and down on curb cuts, etc...

..it’s the third accident involving buses at Disney in the LAST 6 months
You’re pretty new here. ALL KINDS of news stories are posted on FR. Standard practice.
Apart from the type of stupidity and arrogance you cite — which I completely share your views on — the fact remains that cycling on sidewalks is much more dangerous (for both cyclists and pedestrians), than cycling on streets.
Here’s an article that explains why:

You know what, your right. I did not think of spring break. It’s a tragedy, I feel horrible for the kid and his family. I wonder if he was wearing a helmet
Okay....I’ll relent. But, it seems to me this sport and past time should be enjoyed, not used as an expression of a grudging law benefited to them. So, then, what is the harm in leisurely using a sidewalk and not trying to max out your ride? Additionally, I’d also say that accidents with road useing bicyclists are far more injurious than sidewalk....
Fort Wilderness is Disney World’s RV park. There really isn’t much in the way of sidewalks, except around the major buildings.
Most of the park is fairly heavily wooded areas with roads leading to the RV sites.
...dancing along the edge has it’s consequences, we’ve all been dancing lately
I've heard it said that the same is true here in Massachusetts.Don't know for sure if it's true or not, however.
Aren’t bikes supposed to stay off the sidewalks so they don’t run into pedestrians?
Also, both sidewalks and streets near Disneyland are too busy and unpredictable to be safe for kids to bike on.
As a traffic engineer I can confirm that bikes and sidewalks do not mix. That said, no one under 16 years of age should be operating any mode of transportation on a public street with any significant level of traffic. There is a learning curve for cyclists just as there is for drivers.
If a separate bike facility or a designated bike lane is not available, the skill level for a cyclist must be very high. The speed differential, lack of acceleration, awareness on the part of drivers, and other factors enter in. Moreover, someone on a bicycle has even less physical protection than someone on a motorcycle.
Nonetheless, this is a tragic story.
Oops, sorry Disney World not Disneyland. I can’t speak to the safety of riding bikes there because I haven’t been to Disney World.
Don’t you have some other Republican to smear? Nobody drug in into this thread did they?
I read another story that reported the boy was wearing a helmet.
That would certainly be a logical way of looking at it.But each state is free to set its own laws.
Umm. Because there are FReepers who might find it of interest and want to comment or pray for the family of this boy?
There are many unfortunate accidents every day in our big cities. Don’t see what the political significance of this is.
Per channel 2 in Orlando, it happened at a spot with a sidewalk.
Did you not read FRee Republic’s homepage before jumping in and signing up?? This is not just a political forum, noob. lol Subjects of every sort are posted here for discussion.
If I started posting random crime stories or accidental deaths, you would immediately start criticizing me. I know how you work.
And please lose the name-calling. It reflects badly on you.
Check out post #40, my fellow FReepers.
@AlanD...Never mind the mild, sometimes critical, sometimes affectionate label of noob that we bestow on newcomers, you sound like a troll now. “I know how you work.”???
this was about my 4th thought--after, "how sad, what a tragedy, i would die if this happened to my kids,"...
noob is name calling? it's like calling a man a man or a girl a girl... or a Freeper a Freeper...
hello--these things get posted all of the time... ARE you a new, over zealous monitor?
I guess those would be the typical first thoughts but these days I'm on sympathy overload with cynicism rising.
did the bicycle have lights?
did the kid have a helmet as required by law?
Fort Wilderness has bike trails, why was the kid not there?
I went to disneyworld and had a nice dinner at their high end dining simply ruined by some loud obnoxiouis kids. The parents thought it was “cute” our group asked to be moved after appitizers.
oops should read
The parents thought the kids behavior was cute. Our group asked to be moved after appitizers.
I expect the parents were oblivious. Of course now we have former parents who will be agonizing the rest of their lives over this.
You’re not the only one. My child did a flip years ago over a railing while waiting in line for a ride at Disney, and hit his head, and it started gushing blood. He seemed OK except for all the blood, and I was wondering whether Eisner had his checkbook open (he was still in charge back then). I can tell you that they had nurses, doctors, and attorneys surrounding us within 2 minutes. (He was fine - the cut was under his hair, stopped bleeding, he wanted to stay at Disney rather than go and get stitches. Oh, and all we got was a free t-shirt to replace the bloody one.)
