ACAMPO, Calif. (CBS) An anti-Obama sign that had sparked an investigation after being placed near a busy California highway was removed overnight just as local and federal investigators were looking into whether the sign and its almost-obscene phrases was a crime.
The sign along Highway 99 in Acampo, Calif., switched letters between words to avoid outright profanity, reading: "Obama = Niggardly," "Hurts small biz," "Buck Ofama," with a sign on the side that reads "Gone fish'n." It's unclear who took the sign down.
Although the sign didn't display actual racial epithets -- the word "niggardly" is defined by dictionaries as "stingy" -- the restaurant owner who rents the property told CBS station KOVR-TV she was concerned that she will be blamed for its implications.
"We didn't hang the sign," said K&D Brew-Thru owner Claudia Silva. "It probably looks bad because we're closing the business right now."
Economic turmoil forced the coffee and burger shop to close its doors on Tuesday. Employees said the sign appeared sometime after they shut down and before they came back to clean out the building Wednesday morning.
Silva said she acknowledges the sign maker's constitutional right to free speech, but "whether they had the right to come onto this property that we rent and hang the sign I don't think that was really fair to make us look like we're prejudiced."
Patrons of the nearby Rockin' Robins Diner told KOVR-TV they agreed that the play on words left a bad taste in their mouths, Obama fans or not.
"I don't care what color anybody is," said one diner. "It's what he's doing to our country I don't agree with."
San Joaquin County Sheriff's investigators documented the scene Wednesday night and said they would be contacting federal authorities to determine whether a crime was committed.
The property owner reportedly lives down in Southern California, and investigators have not been able to contact him.
Some of my best friends are niggardly...
Any one of 20 words could have been used. The pun was intentional.
Any doc who would voted for Obama deserves to be his health-care slave.
Go to a store and try to find Niger seeds for your Gold Finch feeders.
You’ll only find “Nyjer seeds” now.
I’m not sure if they’re going to rename that big ol’ river, though.
If you can’t stand the heat, then leave the White House and go back to Kenya.
True which makes t an inappropriate term to be used against him because he sure as hell is not being stingy with the tax payers money the government spends at will & is rarely held accountable for.
More good protest signs are needed on highways all over the country. EFFECTIVE!
If they can't determine that a crime was not committed on their own, they need to find another line of work.
Needless to say, that really pissed off some of the Urologists patients.
***Keep the niggardly sign. If people are too [willfully] ignorant that they think its a racial term then laugh at them.***
Especially since Obama re-nigged on his political promises.
Interesting story. Of course, as a urologist, he has other ways to fight back against Obama voters (hehehe).
There are employers that laid off employees first who had Obama bumper stickers on their cars. That was entirely within their rights and I support the practice.
Uh, oh.
Now what are we going to call Nigeria?
Thats funny!
reneged. dork.
The Foley Catheter is a terrible weapon in the hands of a patient man.
Where were all these painfully aware people in 1971? Why was I advised to travel in civilian clothes instead of Dress Greens in 1973?
Screw 'em. 95% of the "coloreds" voted for that Marxist because of his race. If that isn't racist...
So the only crime that is alleged is a possible trespassing charge and/or a vandalism charge (and those are a stretch), so how is this a federal issue?
We’ve never thought the 1st amendment should apply to expressions we don’t like.

Ever played 42? I still like the other spelling better.
