Why Putin can't crush his Islamists
NY Post ^ | April 2, 2010 | Ralph Peters

It's been an embarrassing week for Russian strongman Vladimir Putin, prime minis ter and de facto czar.

On Monday, Islamist suicide bombers struck just a rifle shot from the Kremlin.

The worst of the two subway bombings rubbed ex-KGB man Putin's nose in it by slaughtering dozens in the Lyubanka station -- named for the notorious security-service headquarters upstairs.

And the day after the two blasts killed 39 (with twice that many hospitalized), Islamist terrorists renewed their bombing campaign in Russia's Muslim republic of Daghestan, next to battered (Muslim) Chechnya.

"During World War II, Stalin felt so insecure about his Muslim subjects that he deported the entire Chechen population to Siberia -- an event still festering in the Chechen psyche"

hmmmm...works for me.
May be time for a redo.

Think of what you're saying. There was a military takeover of a nation, a forced inclusion into an imperialistic hegemony, people from that nation (and many others) wanting to be free from that Soviet dictatorship, a mass deportation of the populace to Siberia (similar to what he did to other nationalities), people still wanting to be free from the controlling power, ie, Russia, and you are apparently giving the thumbs up to Stalin.

Nice to see a considered opinion. I agree.

The Chechens are a depressing situation. I loathe their current figters, but theunderlying cause is legitimate and failing to admit that only assists in driving them into the arms of extremist Islam. It was easy for the Russians to brand them early on as Uslamic nuts, but the trouble is that that has becoem a self-fulfilling prophecy and they are more and more headed that way. Whichg puts much of Central Asia in danger if the Russians continue to mishandle the matter.

Personally, I see no solutions now. the Russians have flattened a coutnry and called it peace and the nutjobs are now the most visible (and hence supported) element of the resistance. From here on it can only get worse.

Forgive the spelling. I really shouldn’t type in a hurry so late at night.

Why Russia feels it necessary to rule over a foreign population, especially a feisty Muslim population now driven to fanaticism, is beyond me. I recall a short story written by Tolstoy over a century ago about a military patrol in a Muslim portion of the Empire. Things haven't changed much. First the Czars, then Stalin, and now Putin.

It's like the USA trying to annex Mexico, only worse.

Short answer....because they can.
What we are seeing here is a legacy of imperialism.

For me it seems quite easy to understand. Every time Russians has left these people to themself caused a huge chaos.
Last example is de-facto independent Chechnya which turned into a failed state between 1996-1999 after the first Russian withdrawal. It has soon become a major center for global jihad and international crime including grug, weapons and human trafficing. Chechens were capturing people in neighbouring countries to smuggle them into Chechnya when sent their body parts to realtives to back a ransom demand. Not to mention a handling of remaining Christian and Jewish population in Holocaust style, so-called Taliban-like rule of sharia law. At the end there was an idea of All-Asian Caliphate or a huge Islamic state in Caucasus&Central Asia attracting tonns of Al-Qaeda nuts there. It was ended as an armed attacking of neighbouring Russian states and setting Islamist uprising in Central Asia. In 1999 Russians got their 9/11 with residential blocks bombings and finally said enough of that.
It was only a last example. Same previous deterioration of Soviet power led to a first war too. These muslims have little in common with Mexicans. They are dreaming of World domination and ready to kill for that. Unlike arabs, they have balls to do it, not only to shout Allah Akbar and cry about human rights.
So, Russians have to do the way they are doing or harder. It is not only in their interest.

Yep, these chechans are some of the worst of the worst scumbags in the world. The entire place needs to be depopulated frankly, there’s no hope for them.
