CARACAS, Venezuela Russia has offered to help Venezuela set up its own space industry, including a satellite launch site, as Prime Minister Vladimir Putin made his first visit to the South American country on Friday.

Chavez has built close ties with Russia, buying more than $4 billion in Russian weapons since 2005, including helicopters, fighter jets and 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles.

Chavez has been a caricature up to this point, but this is starting to get serious and dangerous. Putin has steadily been re-creating the USSR and destroying the liberties that Russians have gained since the USSR fell.
If Russia succeeds in gaining a toehold in S.A., it places him and his bombers and missiles in range of the U.S. and we could see another Cuban missile crisis in our future . . . . . only this time, I don’t think Putin will blink.
Chavez is nuts, but Putin is dangerous. We need to pay close attention to this development.
